A NAUGHTY man, named Thomas McIvey, of Gibson county, went to church with his wife on Saturday night, and slipping away from her went back Some, geared up his team, and putting his two children in the wagon, drove to where tho wife of Georga Ledger was waiting. George's wife get into the wagon, and the party lit out for happiness and parts unknown.
THE latest reliable dispatch from tbe moon comes via Professor Campbell, of Wabash College, who, in his observation of tbe eclipse on last Wednesday night, noticed several very important physical fthanges of the moon's surface. The crater of tho volcano Linneus, he states to be in a ioient eruption, and there is ov* ery evidence of a great change going on this, the nearest jplanet to oar earth.

The country is full of grain and there will be a good demand for it at moderate prices, and soon as farmers see that the prospect is good for the next crop they will sell at ruling prices for if prices do not go up before harvest, they can not be expected to be as good- afterwards. There are good grounds, therefore, for a belief In a good business this spring."
AN old and reliable citizen of Orawford county asserts that salt water, in inexhaustible quantities, may be reached at a not very great depth throughout a considerate district of the county lying from Beven to fourteen miles northwest of Leavenworth, in the direction of Jasper, Dubois county. Two wells have already been sunk, with a capacity, if properly worked, of four hundred barrels per day. It is proposed to establish extensive salt works in that neighborhood. '.
A FEW days ago Michael Muxill, an employe in the Brownsburg woolen mills, was in the dye house arranging a belt. His coat was caught and wrapped around a shaft that revolved very rapidly near the wall, which at once dragged him to the shaft and. whirled him with it round and round for half an hour or more. When found his body was literally torn so pieces, the flesh and blood scattered and sprinkled over the door aud will. A day after the burial of such remains as could be gather^ up, a leg was found in the dye vat. y-'
THE Senate bill relating to the importation of Texas and Cherokee cattle, passed the House Friday morning under a suspension of the rules. Tho importation of Texas and Cherokee cattle is pro= hibited under heavy penalty, ozcspt between the months of October and Marcb, and as an additional safeguard in the interest of the people, owners are made lia bla for damages if disease is communicated at any time. The jaw gives general satisfaction. It seems to be conceded that there is no danger of disease from the 1st of October to the 1st of March. jt-

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 7.—A man named Holfer, living In the outskirts of Hannibal, Mo., murdered bis daughter 10 years old, yesterday. He first strangled her with a strap,, then cut her body in two with a knife. Afterwards he tore hor heart out, cut it open with a knife and swallowed the blood. Ho was arrested, and when asked why be committed the deed, he replied, that Christ was killed, and it was no worse for his child to die than Christ that he offerod her as a sact rifice to Christ. It is said tho man insane on religion. ....

TORONTO, Feb. 6.—A gang of despera-1 does, among whom were two peniten-1 tiary convicts, were discovered to-day in a little but on an island in the lake.— They threatened to shoot the detectives who went to arrest them, and while tbe detectives sent for assistance the thieves escaped in boats. On entering the hut large quantities of stolen articles lately reported to the police were found.
