Thk present winter has, thus far, been peculiarly beneficient one lor the pooler classes. The man living from hand to mouth on the proceeds of _his toil has been able to follow his employment with little interruption, while the cost of living has been materially reduced by the fact that much less fuel than usual was reqiUrod to keep the house warw^ ,,Bul a still greater amount of suffering has been averted in-the case of the great army of helpless ones to whom the ordinary winder is a perpetual pang, and Jrb& live through it only because charity aids to keep.the lamp of jljjfe burning. To them it has been a blessing of unmeasured magnitude, and the number of eases of heartrending destitution brought to light much Jess tbap ^iu u%y former winter, though the natural' tendency of a city growth is to increase the number ot cases in greater ratio than the population.
The Leather Tkadk.—Ab mentioned some days since the firm of Barnett A Boss has been dissolved, L. A. Burnett, Esq., continuing at the old stand, with the intention of confining bis trade wholly to loaiher, bides, oil, shoe findings and carrier's tools. Having devoted almost bis oniire life to this line of the trade and having one of the most extensive, commodious and best arranged establishments in the State, he is prepared to give the fullest satisfaction to boot and shoe manufactures, saddle and harness makers, and dealers generally. He presents an advertisement to our readers this morning, to which we invito a perusal and at the same timo we cordially recommend all in want of articles fn his line to give him ajjc*)l, with the assurance that a more qareiuily selected stock or a more courteous or liberal dealer cannot be found in the West.
Desperate Affray.—Friday nij^ht •bout twelve o'clock, at the saloon of Thomas Barr, on Walnut street^, near the Lower Market, a dispute aroee between Andy Watson, of this city, and Felix McCrocklin, of Famersbarg, in Regard to the weight of the latter, who is a very large man. From words thev Came to blows, and Tom Barr attempt* ing to part the combat tacts, was stabbed by McCrocklin in the upper left breast, rnflU.ting a very dangerous found.
A few minutes after policemen Bowland and Whitfield arrived and in attempting to arrest McCrocklin, he stabbed Bowland in the leg. The knife penetrated to the bone, causing a very painful wound. McCrocklin was finally tered, by being knocked down with a "billy," and placed in the calaboose. On Saturday Mayor Cookeriy hold .him in the sum of two thousand dollars, to ap pear for trial on the 16th, and failing t6v give the required bond, he was lodged rn Jail.

Grsat Excitement exista in""tflir' neighboring town of Marshari, Illinois,' over the discovery that the "Devil" is a Resident of that county. The Messenger Says:
We are credibly informed that a most horrid and appalling animal has lately] been seen in Wabash tov/nship in that] county. The people in the vicinity of where it was seen have frequently heard during the night loud and tremendous screams, which they could not account for or could not tell what caused them Until the day that this wonderful animal Was seen. A gentlemau living in the neighborhood of Guysett's Mill went out into the woods bunting his hogs, when he was suddenly startled by hearing something sliding out of a hollow tree. Be turned around to soe what«it might be when horror of horrors I there stood erect before him a creature 8 feet high, having the human form except the head, which was like unto tho head of 'an enormous bird with a beak of tremendous dimensions. It gave: one scream that reverberated for miles through the woods. Our hero did not remain to form a more inti mate acquaintance, but took to his heels at a speed of 2:40, and sweara .it was bis Satanic Majesty and no mistake. Great excitement prevails in the neighborhood.
Waltham Watches. That the American Watch is superor.- in atcurae^ as a time-keeper, and in substantial val ue, to its important rivals, is now generally conceded by the intelligent. It is so made as to render imperfection a physical impossibility.
The question now it: "Which thoroughly good watch is really cheapest?'' The Waltham Watches have stood the test of time. Wallham is the original seat of American watch-making. iThe idea of making our own watches, land making each piece'.of machinery specially adapted thereto, so that a piece lost or broken may surely be replaced by a similar piece from any other'watch jof its class, or one ordered from the manufactory on purpose, originated here and here it has been carried .to tperfsctiln. Everyyear since the start, has -witnessed improvements in machinery, processes, and workmanship, until WAtches ac^iow made at Waltham as cheaply and as ox* cellently as anywhere on earth, as Ihe vast and ever-widening demand for them abundantly proves. M!',-.-•••»"
Self constant and signal have baen lbe improvements in machinery at the Waltham manufactory, that the JCompan'y have not only been enabled to make better and bettor Watches, but they now sell them for fever dollars in Greenbacks than they cost ia gold before the War.
In conclusion, w6~ would refer 'oUr readers to the advertisement of pany in anoUxer column, which contains many important facts,/and givei ,maiy useful bints to watch buyers every whWW,"

A Swinbxeb Abroad.—Some of our readers may season just closed, rumors in reference to a certain man,at that time located at Dar-
jpackipi^l$^j^ fr?lated a building fd'i ifrat ostensfMb purpose, and who obtained salt to pack hogsr for himself and money from several of our citizens to purchase pork and oata on commission, under false representations. This man, whose name was Thomas Daniels or Thomas K. Daniels, suddenly left on Christmas morning in debt about a thousand dollars in this city, to those wbo hadJ advanced him. He was purssied to St. Louis, theace to Leavenworth, Kansas at both of which places he changed hisj name, was brought back about the first of February, when he made a doleful statement of being drugged and robbed) the distress of his wife, and that he now had no money, never intended to swindle, etc. Believing his representations true, 'ne.was not prosecuted. Those who suffer-1 ed by him ^loto think it was a most ciis-f placed leniency on their part, and that he should have been put through,
This man Daniels is about forty-five to forty-eight years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stoop shouldered, bald, and draws the hair over the top of his head to cover bildnesB wears goatee, dyed.
Information has been received here within a day or two past, that a man answer-: ing the above description was arrested at, Attica and taken to Muncie, on charge of forgery. A woman claiming to be his wife furnished the money, taking up the forged notes, and destroying the evidence, There was another party from New York after him on the charge of swindling.: Whether or not the man arrested at: Attica is Daniels (which is altogether, probable) sopui hege «nd ..at IJarnr^i be« $ve{!)a«rielsf b# 4° u^tru'st•worthy, and of whose character the public should be aware.

Formerly, it was difficult, to obtain life insurance in responsible companies.— There were those which promised large dividends and advantages, without any sufficient guarantees. Life insuranco should be •perfect—secure-beyond all risks or chances. A company should not only have a large capital, but should be man. aged by men of the highest integrity and financial ability. We believe that we have such an insurance in the National Life Insurance Company of the United States of Americs. It has a full paid capital of a million dollars and with such financiers as Jay Cooke, and Clarence H. Clark, and aboard of directors 'embracing gentlemen of the largest busi iness experience, we are not surprised that it is one of the most successful institutions
its kind. It delivered its first policy iAugust 1, 1868 and the policies issued since that time cover insurance to tbe Wmount of Eight Million Dollars.
