the house is situated near the railroad track, and had been occupied for gome time by an Irish family. Tho ghost makes its appearance every night, just as the clock strikes 12, and for about half an hour makes itself at home by throwing.chairs, tables, cooking utensils, &c., about the room in a promiscuous manner. The family stood it as long as possible, and then moved out. Another family moved in, but got enough in one night. The owner offered $25 to any one who would "lay'' the ghost, and a young man, possessed of more courage than money, offered to do the job. He armed himself and repaired to tho house. Just as the clock struck the hour of midnight, a slight noise was beard, followed by a groan. About this time, doors in the upper part of the house commonced shutting in a mysterious manner. This continued for some time, when the door of the room suddenly opened, and a ladv, dressed in black, and deadly pale, stood before him. He started toward her, when she vanished through the door, and on his going to the door, she was nowhere to be seen. The house, several ye*rg ago. was the scene of a most brutal murder, in which a man killed his wife by cutting her heart out. He left the country, and did not return until tbe war broke out, when he enlisted iu a New York regiment, and was killed during the storming of Vicksburg.
