Daniel W Foo»HEgs has been for many years arid still is a recognized ^nd' prominent ^ftfnpion of "Sp.uthsrn rights' end •irSoatbern Institutions."' He lha» been and is to-day the pet and idol of that peculiar element of Southern Society which cltims adherenco to "the code of honor" as an indispensable prerequisite to social orthodoty. Ho, more than any other public Northern man of the pres cut day, is the peculiar representative of the class who hold that the only repara tion fpr an insult is "& suitable apology or "a hostile me'efting"—"pistols and coffee for two." •i'tr.i $

Yet this illtfstrTi'lis Norl*hern exponent of "Southern chivalry'' now goes on his his ro'tfnds up and down this District wearing k^rand ^rhich would utterly iex elude imrjfroln soCiiil. contact or affilia tion with those Spread Southrons" whoso prailis he has sounded through tho iolling yeats since his ambrosial locks were first shaken by the autumn breeze over a political rostrum. He daily lives, moves and has his being under a ban which he could not wear in any district South of Mason and Dixon's line without being ostracised by the very men whom he has selected as his models and to eulogize whom is, apparently, the mission of his life. In proof of this as sertion we have only to cite the following language which was deliberately used by his old friend and former associate, the Hon. James Hughes, in a speech deliv! ered by him atthe Court House in Bloom ington on1 the 16th ultimo: "But upon the assumption that Voor« hees did write this editorial, and I know that he did, I charge him with having published A WILFUL AND

We repeat, there is ho locality South of Mason and Dixon's line, where Voorhees could find a single "Southern gentleman" who would associate with the wearer of that brand. No time should be lost in perfecting an organization for securing the attend ance of every Republican voter at the polls next week, and for protecting the ballet box against frauds. Committees should be promptly made up to look after the various matters that want attending to on election day. We need an ample number of canvassers and challengers for every voting precinct—men fitted for the work by their acquaintance with voters, ready discernment, firmness, and untiring energy. Let the whole work of the day be carefully provided for in season.

The Journal is again in agony about the "gold interest on bonds." We suggest to that paper to Apply to V00RHEE8 for relief. He, with all the Democratic Representatives from Indiana, and every Democrat in the House, except two, voted for tike gold interest amendment and fastened that policy on the country id opposition to the solid vote of a large majority of Republican members. This feature of hia sinuous record he now ignores, and when oalled to account for sueh a vote he"con'/ rcynem&er." Lei the Journal stir up that treacherous memory of hw and learn from him ail about the matter. S

I should regard his (SErltfotfrte) election at this juncture, when smdiness of parpoee, decwon and self-control are so much needed, as ooe of the greatest calaraitiesthat could befali the coon try.

The large barn of Mr. Elijah Jett, of Bartholomew county, containing a large amount of hay, oats, and farming imple ments, estimated at $2,000, was consumed by fire last Thursday. *''1^

We learn from the Brookvillo American that during the progress of the Democratic meeting at Peppertown, on Tues day, Reuben Huddleston was instantly killed by the premature discharge or bursting of a swivel or small cannon which ho was assisting to firo off. His brains were literally blown out of head. Ho had been soldier in I Union army.1'*3' '"4

From the Indianapolis Sentinel we learn something new in rektion to the Young murder. J. W. M. Langsdale has been appointed special administrator of Young's estate, and has brought- suit against W. J. Abrams, Silas Hartman and Mrs. Clems for $40,000. We do not know on what grounds tho suit is brought but it is claimed that these parties have possessed themselves of Young's property to that amount.

•"We-learn from the Evariuvule Journal that the Kx»n. Robert Dale Owen, one of tho time«honored Democrats, who, in the good old days of Democracy, was a prominent member of that party in South Indiana, and a Representative in the State Legislature and in Congress, delivered a speech at New Harmony, on Saturday night, in which he eulogized, in the highest terms, General Grant, for his public services totfcfc eoontry and gave a short eketch cf-his personal observations of the •ervioes of Seymour during the riot in New York City, in 1863, when the mob attempted to resist the draft, on which occasion he addressed that infamous body of men as "my friends^: ™„. i&%, r*/wO ^Ui«.

Mb. Voorhees again claimed in his recent Court House speech, that he procured a promotion for the owner of this paper, •while the latter wasin the field. We know nothing of this except on Mr. Voorhees' representations, and any thing he did was voluntary. We have been disposed to gi.^e Mr. Voorhees credit for the will to help us» but have always doubted his power to have done so in this case. Mr. JRankin has a record' in which" the keenest scrutiny can detect no blemish, and possessea that sterling integrity and that high order of business capacity, which eminently fit him for the responsible position to which he will be called by a handsome majority of the votes that will be cast in Vigo county next Tuesday.

No loyal man will forget that Morton C. Rankin was a brave soldier of the Union when the imperiled cause of the country v^as most in need of his aid. Nor will the fact that he was severely wounded in action—that he boars on his person the marks of seven or eight separate and distinct wounds~be forgotten by those who believe in rewarding valor and patriotism by expressions of public appreciation, laboring men will be glad to support so worthy a representative of tfieir own honored class. Now, sir, I can certify to the above as being true, for I have followed the sea for over forty years, mofet of the time doing business with the Wefet Indies.
