Today the sama-gentleman is among the largest purchasers of native wine in the country. This j». a fair example of the change which bas been wrought public opinion in regard to what is already an important branch of industry by the energy and perseverance of a f«w men.

Passaic ahd Yin eland, New Jersey, the cultivation of the grape lias attracted considerable Attention for some years, and at these points, as well as on the mountain slopes and at several points on tbe HUcUori River, there are titensive vineyards, many of which are owned by AlfirwtSpeer, who, from a small beginning, ad44tl spite of obstacles of no ordinary kifta, has attained great success a9 a vine grower. His vineyards, near Passaic and other places, comprise from fifty to one hUfidte&aoree, on which are raised vines of different varieties—some of the most difficult to bring to maturity. Among them is the imported Oporto grape, from which is made the port grape wine which rival# in every quality the original port As may b& supposed, the utmest care and unceasiDg attention were necessary to bring the slip* of the Oporto grape to a bearing point, through all the vicijsitudes. now healthy and vigorans, arid prolific bearers. Mr. Speere's mode of rultifation differs from that generally adopts, bis vines being trained J\. ftjaperate upright support, and wir,ea and lattice work extirely dispjBDSedrJffith. By this means abuudaht shade is secured as/well as thorough ventilation. Thegrapes are allowed to hang until October, wb»n they Income "dead ripe." They are then gathered find put in tho wine press, whence the juice is conveyed in pipes to VK(S where it is fermentation sets TnTif it ia intended to manufacture red wine, thn skins and pulp are aliowed to remnin on tho "must," but these are removed if whi|g twite via desired. The juice is soon bracked off'' intfl barrels, and stored away in another building, the date being marked on each barrel. After successivo "rackings,,v to give proper "finea re a re re to an in side cellar, where the temperature is always tha aame., Here they remain until the wines are from three to Ave years old, which is the necessary age.
The average productions of the vineyards controlled by Mr. Speere is about sirteon thousand gallons a year, but this isby no means the limit of his manufacture, for, stiruulatedjby his example, some farmers have given their attention to grape-growing, in many instances turning to profitable account land otherwise unproductive.
J3o rapidly has the demand for Catawba ancl port grape wines of New Jersey manufacture increased, that it was found neceesary to enlarge the cellarage and storage accommodations, end a fine three story building, one hundred feet front, has been "erected, having underneath a deep cellar,—or, rather, two—one within the otheT—where any requisite temperature can bo steadily maintained. A number of other buildings adjacent are also occupied in connection with the business one on the hill is sailed tbe i'presshouse," and anothorthe "tank-house." So successful has the experiment proved, that it is safe to predict that in a few years the banks of the PaBsaicand the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge will be covered for miles with vine
Catawba and port grape are mentioned above as New Jersey wines, but Mr. Speer's manufacture is not confined to these, for he has the controlling interest in large vineyards in California, which were planted by the early Spaniards and aro now under tbe supervision of French and German wine-growers. The products ore known as the "P. J. California" piMtAnd sherry, "P. J. La Prueissima," which already rank high in this market.
In conclusion, it may serve a good purpose, as an example of what energy will accomplish, to notice briefly Mr. Speere's career. Thrown upon the world when a child, he was at IT years of age apprenticed to a cabinet maker, who ageed to board him, teach him the trade, and give him his clothes until 21 years ef age. Any one 'whft served an apprenticeship 25 years ago knows what that meansten hours in the shop, and a rest from labor In the evening, which was generally
en^9y®4bjsplittiag
wood, milkiog cows,
and' by daylight In the morning weeding garden,, and with makeing fires, and "doing chores." At this period of hia l.fe, young Spoor had an ambition to become a literary man, and every spare moment was devoted.to study. -He devised various expedients to secure funds for the purchase of books. At the expiration of his apprenticeship he resolved to start a shop of hi! own, ot course on a small scale, in his native, village ».f Passaic. A friend lsased him apiece of ground, whereon be built him a shop with his own handi, and gnt all the business of the neighborhood, which WHS scant eno ?gh. Often he has comd fo New York, bought the stuff for a .sofa, shipped it by rail, and returned home on foot, a distance of twelve miles, not having money to pay. hi« fair,'to turn the raw material into furniture, whirh fro'tild produce funds enough to make another trip fjr stilll more material, to the city. Energy and detsrmihafforfk'to"lucceid^soou brought their reward, and in a few »ycars be bad a large shop and was able to employ sav* eral journeymen, but notwithstanding his apparent aucca38,.b« was still without capital To anppiv this WJJ in the habit of ihakinf jor.rr.eye through the country,' taking a circuit of ten or fifteen miles, carrying with him his tools and vannish pots Thus armed he would call at the farm houses, repair the "furniture, re-vanish the chairs and tables in the "best rooms," and occasionally a pt-'uliarly" crazy and dBariy-cberished pi^coff antique furniture to his shop to te "made as good as new.1' In this way be accumulated enough to buy hi? shop and the lot on which it stood, and soon after the house and grounds which he now occupies as a dwelling Baring this close application, to business he found- time to employ hia inventive faculties, which he did in devising a piano on an entirely nr w'plan, for y?hich he obtained a patent. Ae alio invented and patented a window-fastener, now in general use. Want of means (which, in his case, included time as well as money) impelled him, reluctantly, to partailly abandon his idea of aiiterflry life, and he turned his attention to horticulture and arborculture as & means of recreation ^vhus proving^ that the busiest mo a have the most leis ure), and incidentally to those pursuits manufactured gome wine, which ha stored for his own use.
Ambitions to enlarge his establishment, hestartod out with his window fasteners, intending to sell tbe patent right of the different States, and invest the proceeds
in (be other invention, or ia *n*iriwg storing winee, 'When in New Orleans he fonnd his patent right poor stock, and not wishing to leave Louisiana without at laas»t clearing his expenses, he sent home for a basket of bis wine. Thiehe used ae sample, and took large orders in New OrleanB and Mobile. This unlooked for taceaw led him to the conc lueion that anything that appealed to the sense of taste, especially bibulous taste, woald prove more profitable than win-dows-fasteners of new style pianos,.and he at once returned home, and directed his attention to fruit wine making.
From this transition to the port, grape culture has ^eea essy. Beginihg With a few vines, he studied the peculiarities of tbe plant/and ascertained the best varieties for bis. purposes—What he began as an experiment has proved the stepping stone to fortune, and he now has the most oxtensive vineyard and Wine vaults in tbe Eastern States, and a fine warehouse and salesroom- at 243 Broadway, in this city. Notwithstrnding his many engagements, he still found time to spare to fulfil the duties of a good citizen, by taking an active part in every movement that tended to tbe wel&re of the village. He saw that grading and paving tbe streets, wculd enhance value of property largely, so, after obtaining the necessary authority from the Legislature, at it he went, devoting an entire year without hope or piospect of reward to the enterprise. He graded and laid over five miles of side* walk in about fi?e months, and the result is seen in the fact that more houies have been erected in Passaic during the past two years than in ten before, and band* some villas and cottages dot thelandcape in every direction. As a consequence, the value of property has nearly doubled, and, although there are many beautiful sites for building, they are held at largeha as pa re it two years ago. ,. .,
AN old house on Main street, New Albany is creating a decided sensation. It is said to be '-haunted," whatever that is, and ghosts, hobgoblins, and Satanic looking cusses with dart tails and cloven hoofs are said to nightly hold high carnival within its rooms and cellars.

The Democratic State Convention of the 8 th of January says that Maj. Carter is entitled to the gratitude of the country for the sacrifices he made in defense of the Union. But how many Democrats will show their gratitude by voting for him against tbe man who declared he would not "vote one man, one dollar nor one gun" to aid in relieving Fort Sumter, when it wasbeseiged by 10,000 rebels and its gallant little garrison starving? We shall see when the contest is over whether this resolution was intended merely to hoodwink soldiers and induce them to vote the Democratic ticket, or whether the men who adopted it meant What they resolved. Maj. Carter not only vc.ted, at every election, for men and money to aid in preserving the Union, but west himself to the field.—Rockville
