TCMAK* SENATE..,^
ThaVieBftta.-ffas called to order at 12 if." Aftwpiftyer, Jttr. Anthony offer$ J&9. following resolution
Resolved,
The resolution was adopted, 33 to 1, Mr. Buckalew voting nay. A similar resolution was announced as having been adopted in the House, which v?as concurred in.
On motion of Mr. Sherman there was a call of the Senate, when thirty-four members answered, exactly a quorum.
Mr. Anthony stated Mr. Sprague was absent from illness. Tho Senate then took recess of half an hour.
On reassembling a message was received from the House stating that body had-passed a resolution to adjourn, the same as adopted by the Senate.
Mr. Buckalew offered a resolution requesting the House to inform the Senate if a quorum was present when that resolution passed.
Some debate followed, during which Messrs. Anthony and Edmunds contended that Buckalew's resolution was discourteous*. mt
The resolution* was concurred in and the Senate adjourned. Messrs. Buckalew and McCreery were the only Ddmbcratic Senators present.
Most of the Senators left "Washington to-night for their homes, 'ft' HOUSE.
The House was called to order at 12 M. A resolution was adopted to adjourn the same as the Senate.
Only three Democrats present Messrs. Brooks, Eldridge and Randall declined voting.,
Mr. Ochttuok asked leave to offer ares olution providing that during the remainder
r,{
On suggestion of Mr. Washburne, of Illinois, Mr: Schenck Tenewed his motion to suspend the rules to admit his resolution on Internal Revenue matters.
Mr. Brooks made two points of order, but they were overruled by the speaker. Mr. Spalding demanded the yeas and nays. A message was read from the Senate that they had adopted a resolution of adjournment. The vote on tho motion to suspend the rules resoluted 98 nays, 2 yeas. in response to a question, the Speaker stated one hundred and seven constituted a quorum.
At the close of the session there were 224 members on the roll, but Stevens and Finny, of Pennsylvania, and Mann, of Louisiana, had since died, leaving only 221 on the roll.
Mr. WaBhburne, of Illinois, moved to concur in the Senate resolution of adjournment.
Mr. Randall objected. Mr. Mullins moved a call of the House, which was made, only 100 members answering to their names.
The Democratic members present, not answering were Brooke, Eldridge, Boyer, Phelps, Haight and Randall.
Excnses on account of sickness were made for Ereman, Terry, Hunter, Shellabarger and Upson.
During the call of the House, and before its conclusion, Mr.Schenck remarked, a message was waiting delivery from the Senate.
Mr. Payne moved the suspension of all bi^ioe^ under tho call, which was agreed io, when, the doors were opened and a message from the Senate was received, that that body had concurred in the House resolution of adjournment.
Mr. Schenck then moved tho House adjourn. This was agreed to and the Speaker announced, adjournment until Friday, October 10th, noon.
The Speaker then left the chair and ceme into tho. area, where for more than an hour he was engaged in pleasant personal and political conversation with members, who congratulated him on the two-fold luck for him—his election to the Vice Presidencj', and his election by a lady, who is to share his honors. These congratulations- iie received in the best humor and with great apparent satisfaction. Ho leaves Washington to-morrow night for New York.
Themannorin which the Democratic members were outgeneralled in regard to adjournment was a source of much amusement among Republican members.
The adjournment resolution was the first business put through, immediately after the Chaplain's prayer, from the length of which some daoger was apprehended, and before any Democrat had come into the Hall. A single objection would, of course, in the absence of a quorum, have defeated it.
It is understood in regard to the next session, as it was in regard to that just closed, that it shall not be incumbont on any member to attend unless advised thereto by Senator Morgan and Mr. Schenck.
Mr. Butler, of Massachusetts, presented a petition asking the House to direct the Judiciary Committee to inquire into the breach of privilege of a member in the service of process ty Mr. Woolley and by Mr. Kimberly, of Baltimore, while on his return from the session of the House, and to report what action ought to be taken to sustain the privileges of the House, and punish their infringement.
Referred to Judiciary Committee.

WASHINflTON, Sept. 21
By the Senate, the House con
curring, that the President of the Senate and the Speaker oftho House adjourn their respeotivo Jhousofl until 12 o'clock, noou of, thp 16th of October, and that they then,'unless otherwise ordered by the two hdtisea farther adjourn their respective htnwea until the 10th of November at 12 o'clock, noon and that they then, unless otherwise ordered, further adjourn their respective houses until the first Monday in December at 12 o'clock, noon. .•
the session it shall be in order
to suspend the rules at any time. Mr. Brooks objected. Mr. Schenck moved to suspend the rules, btit subsequently withdrew his motion.
A count by the speaker showed only 105 members present. Mr. Scbenck then asked leave to offer a resolution, as follows ».
Resolved,
That the Committee on Pub
lic Expenditures be directed to inquire into the reasons why Supervisors of Internal Revonue provided for in tho law of July 20, 1868, have not been appointed also to ascertain whether or not since the passage of said law there has been any failure of any officer of the Government properly to administer the Internal Revenue laws, or any attempt on the part of such officer, or of any person to defeat, embarrass, prevent, or improperly inter« fere with the prompt administration of suoh laws, with power to appoint a subcommittee to sit during recess and send for persons and papers.
Mr. Spalding objected to that resolution or any general business. Mr. Schenck moved suspension of the rules, stating there was good cause for the resolution.
Mr. Brooks objected to any statement unless opportunity was given for reply. Mr. Schenck said he then had no statement to make. On count in suspending the rules the vote stood 69 to 6, no quorum-
Mr. Schenck then withdrew his motion. Mr. Schenck proposed recess of half an hour.
Mr. Brooks made a point of order that less than a quorum could not order recess. The Speaker suggested there might be a quorum present, as he noticed several gentlemen not voting, including Mr. BrOOks. .a
