THE Wabash delegation to W'ednes day's mass meeting at Indianapolis, finding thai they couldn't make connection at Peru on that morning, walked sixteen miles early in the morning, in order to reach the train in time.

THE masonry on the new Jail at this place, was completed on last Saturday.— The Carpenters will be ready for the plasterers to commence their work in about ten days. The masonry work surpasses that of our Court House by far, and when completed will be an ornament to Newport, as well as a safe plaee to keep miscreants who will not obey the law.— Newport Hoosier State.

IT

is suggested that the reason for exceptional cases of bad orthography among the mottoes iu the grand XTnion procession at Indianapolis on Wednesday night. is found in the fact that we have been receiving recruits of late from the Democratic ranks. That is doubtless the correct explanation, and in due time these additions will exhibit a great improvement in their education, as a consequence of their new and better associations.

THE Democracy of Owen, Brown, Putnam and Morgan counties held a barbecue at Quincy on the 3d Inst. There were about ",000 persons present. Several beeves were roasted. Joseph E. McDonald and a rebel apologies from Kentucky, named Kinney, were the principal speakers. A number of fights and cutting affrays occurred on the grounds. Several persons were dangerously wounded, one of whom was the notorious Sol Akers, of Cioverdale.

This example of liberality on the part of a Marion county Republican is worthy of general imitation.

THE City Couiaii of N*w Albany have levied a tax of one dollar on tho huudred dollars of valuation for general purposes, twenty cents on tho one hundred dollars valuation for sinking fund, and tive cents on the one hundred dollars of valuation for school purposes. This makes the total tax levy one dollar and twenty .five cents on tho one hundred of valuation, being a considerable increase upon last year's assessment.

•'SHE'S getting pretty hot' in politics down this way, if ono may judge from results. WHAT is tho matter with the Democratic Central Committee? Tho call for the Democratic Grand Rally on the 17th inBt., is signed by .T. E. McDonald, and not by Lafe Develin. What is tho meaning of this? [Ind. Journal.

THE Cincinnati Gazette inquires: "Ha any one been able to find out, from the columns of the Enquirer, that a man named Hendricks is running as the Democratic candidate for Governor of Indiana ?",

IN the city of Madison there are several Democrats who wero in office under the Democratic city Council of last year, and who think they are in office yet. They have presented bills for services they did not render.

THERE was arousing Republican meet, ing at Rushville last Friday. Fifteen thousand people were present. The speakers were Col. Thomas H. Nelson, Hon. George W. Julian, Hon. R. W. Thompson, General E. M. Lee, of Connecticut, Hon. Fred. Montgomery, of Ohio, and Major J. D. Evans.

ISAAC ROSS, a one-legged soldier of the "old 15th" Infantry, and who attended the Fighting Boys in Blue demonstration at Indianapolis on the 2d inst., remained over on tho 3d to draw a pension. At night, while returning to his hotel (the Commercial House) in company with J. F. Richards, another one-legged soldier, who carried the flag in the procession on Wednesday night, in the Lawrence County Battalion, he was rudely assaulted by a While Boy in Blue in their procession, and his cap knocked off. The crippled soldiers referred to from Lawrence county are sober, quiet men, and they did not say or do anything to provoke this attack.

Ross lost his leg at Mission Ridge.

A GENTLEMAN residing at Cioverdale, Putnam county, informs us that the Democracy of that place were recently guilty of one of those detestably mean acts for which the party has acquired a worldwide celebrity. The Republicans had collected a quantity of lumber, belonging to carpenters, wagon makers and others, and had used it in erecting a temporary stand and seats on the occasion of a Republican demonstration. When the meeting closed, it was too late at night to return the lumber, and it was left on the ground. During the night the Democracy assembled in considerable force, piled up the lumber and burned it. Such conduct needs no comment.

WE learn from the Indianapolis Jour' nal that the return excursion train on the Vincennes Road Wednesday night, came to a dead stand still about five miles out and could proceed no further An inspection of the track disclosed the fact that some high-toned Democrats had plentifully soaped the rails at a poinfc where the grade inclined upward, and .the train was detained all night. The soap had been better employed in soft-soapiDg the rustic Democracy in some of their benighted fastnesses. The Democratic mind is essontually the same in all sections and times. It pursues the Indian style of ambushing, and the like, in the South aud in the North it breaks out in an equally disreputable manner. This exploit will do to go alongside of the sack of Jo Barrett's grocery.

THE Republican ladies of bambridge City, treated the citizens to an agreeable surprise Friday evening by raising an ash pole, nearly one hundred feet in height, boaring sfti American flag, and a streamer insciibed with the name of Grant ar.d Colfax. The affair was entirely impromptu, most of the citizens hearing of it for the first time after sunset, yet more than a thousand persons were present, including a company of Fighting Boys in Blue, and Grant Cadets, with sevepal able speakers and a band of music. The work throughout was performed by the ladies, who pre pared the pole, raised and firmly secured it, invited the speakers and procured the music. The affair was a brilliant success comparing very favorably with a recent Democratic pole raising at that place, which was proceeded by two weeks' preparation, and the use of the name of Senator Doolittlo as an attraction.

telegraphed that pa

per yestesday the following sanguinary piece ot intelligence: "Colonel John A. Keith, of Columbus, and Mr. B. S. Sproule, of this city, got into an altercation on Tuesday night, and angry words ps'jsed between them. Hostile messages were exchanged, and to-day the parties with their friends are missing from the city. It is thought that they have gono to Kentucky to fight a duel. A well known lawyer of this city is acting as Mr. Sproule's friend."

Mr. Sproule, who is connected with the Sentinel, was in the city yesterday, looking as well as usual, fromj^which it may safely be inferred that eYther the duel didn't come off, or that it was bloodless as respects Sproule. We have not heard from Colonel Keitb, and his friends might feel some solicitude, but it may safely be believed that the

The procossion which formed at the west end of the town, was counted by three or four persons as it marched through town —one of them counted 742, one other 743, and another 741—add this to 400 and we have 1,143- add to this 500 parsons who were not in the procession and who did not come on the trains and we hare 1,643. But sensible Democrats claim 2,000.— Grant th%t there were that number present—men, women and children. At least one-fourth of the number were Republicans—leaving 1,500—at least half of this number were women and children, leaving 750 Democratic voters present.— There were a few persons present dressed in uniform, claiming to be "White Boys iu Blue"—the number was very small, and composed principally of boys from 19 to 20 years of age.
