PBOMI&ENT among the works in "our State literary are the writings of the different Scotts who have embelished modern literature. The many fascinating volumes of Sir Walter's prose and poetry and the autobiography of Winfield have heretofore drawn largely on the honors pertaining to the name, but the new work entitled "John T. Scott on the National Debt" will in future eclipse the writings of all his predecessors who have borne that honored patronymic. It is understood that another volume, ''Scott on the Fish Law," will soon bq issued,
-----
JOHN T. SCOTT, in his Cloverland speech, said "the public debt of the United States amounts to as many dollars as there are grains in twelve hundred millions of bushels of wheat." A friend of ours has taken the trouble to make an estimate, founded onfthis little remark of the varacious would-be Judge. He finds there are 1.100 grains in an ounce of large, plump wheat. This gives 17,600 grains to a pound, 1,056,000 grains to a bushel and the Inconceivable number of 1,96? grains in Seott's twelve hundred millions of bushels. From this it appears that John T. Scott, whe thinks himself qualified for the highly responsible position of Common Pleas Judge, haa been guilty of standing up before an audience of intelligent men and assuring them that the public debt of the TJnited States amounts to 200,000,000,000«
Comment on such a itatement would be superfluous. Nothing can add to th contempt which every honorable. inrad must feel for the author of so outrageously stupid fal$$ogd, 3% wflJjM^J^jf ever, that could this man be elected to the bench, one good result would follow.— Longevity, in this Common Pleas Dis trict, would be greatly promoted for no se&tibia person would "shtiffle off 'ttti mortal coil" if he could avotd it^ knOlrtn^ that his estate must pass through -the bands of the author of the most stupendous falsehood ever invented outside of a lunatic asylum.

A SrrMOTTB AIN BLAIB Demoeratic Club recently formed in Choctaw county, Alabama, adopted a resolution cordially inviting "all Democrats, without distinction of color," to join with them for the campaign. Two of the Vice-Presidents of the club are -negroes. We suggest'to theSeymourcaad .Blasr Club of this ciiy? that they adopt the Bamercour9e, and convert some of our "Kadioal piggers" into colored Democrats. Or, if tbii is Peking too much, some of the discharged colored soldiers in this vicinity itaight be |nvi ted to join the "white boys in blue." RADICAL ButLinsM, 4?^Q&nrroN LA SATURDAY.—Tho Badical. bullies in and about Clinton, Yermillion county, are d& termined to sultain their reputation for general meanness atac^rowdyism. We are reliably informed Mr. Yoorhees peremptorily denies that there was any" attempt to interrupt-his speaking a£ Clinton, and asserts thst at«no place.h*s jh«: bfien mora courteously treated during the canvass than at Clinton last Saturday.
SCOTT ON FINANCES.—In a speech at Cloverland a few days ago, John T. Scott said the public debt of the United States amounts to one dollar for every second that has elapsed since the creation of the world." He based his ealculation on the supposition that the world was created eight thousand years ago. Eight thousand years reduced to seconds gives 252,460,800,000, Accord* in£ to t&e Vetaeious John T., the public debt is, therefore, $252,460,800,000.
But aceerding to Mr.' McCulloch on August 1, 1868, the. total debt, including the Pacific Railroad bonds, was $2,523,534,480, showing a little discrepancy between these two financiers of only $249,937,265,520.. In other words John T. Scott magnified the debt one hundred and tvenly'jive pmea and gave that as the true statement.
