Aug. 13.—^Lo
Cirtuit Court Of Jacl-eon county, Hon.'G. A. BicknAll presiding, had belore it today the ease of the robbers of the Acbms Express. Company, Mike Colleran'and Wall Hammond, charged with robbing the company by
Jumping on the express
car and overpowering tire M&sengtir^ on the night of September &Ui,- 1867, near Seymour. Both prisoner^ were ^defended^ by the notorious .Jason Brown, the .celebrated thieves' lawyer -of .JaiSfeBori" cdunty„whe8e boaflt i8ihat.no thief whomi he defended has ever beaa. pjuvi«ted. S
Colleran, however, in opposition to'the advice of his counsel, Entered a plea of guilty, and wa3 sentenced by the Court to five years in the penitentiary and a fine of $500.
Hammond, under the adviee of couifeel, applied for a continuance, which under the statutes of Indiana, the court had no power to overrule, and it was accordingly granted.
Jason Brown has gained an unenviable notoriety as a defender of the Renos, and the voPyHtroret kind nf mnrd^rpr?", assassins «nd thievfia. I
The vigilanco cpinmitt.io had given up all further attention to criminal coFes, rplying upon the courts boing able to enforce order. Tbis, now however, npjeis all, as Colleran was willing to take the witness stand and testify, in regard to Hammond'p. complicity with him in the robbery above alluded' to. It now pp pears as though the vigilance committee would have to again take affairs into their own hands and mcto out summary punishment upon the thieves and the thieves counsel.
