The latest Yankee inventions are economic cheroots, which are twice the length of the ordinary, and herein is the economy. The Government taxes cigarB without regard to length, and the application of a knife will make one of these into two in an instant.

Severe Accident.—Saturday night last our fellow citizen Samuel S. Jlarly, Esq., accidentally fell down the stairs at his residence, receiving severe contussions from a lamp he held in bis hand, besides sustaining other injuries by the fall, and by which we regret to learn he is confined to his room.

Refreshing.—Fragrant

Drowning.—vOur State exchanges give accounts of numerous cases of death by drowning, of young and venturesome persona, who, during the intense heat which hM prevailed for sometime, have thoughtlessly rushed into streams and ponds without previous precaution against the effect of sudden immersioa in the cooling liquid, or knowledge of the streams they choose for bathing places.

The short coats and tight pants which are here voted to be "style," do not appear to find favor in San Francisco. A young New Yorker, attired in what we denominate the mo de, lately landed there and created a decided sensation. One of the editors who saw him says his coat-tail ends where the tail of a well shaped gorilla begies, and his tight pants gave to his small legs (which terminated in prodigious yams), the appearance of a couple of broomsticks springing out of molasses kegs. ..

Meeting

The

in the vicinity of this

city is quite heavy, and is nearly all cut and stored in good condition. j[

Sudden Death.—We regret to learn of the sudden death of Mr. John Petry, of Fayette township, an old an respected citizen, which occurred last Saturday. He was in his usual health during tbe forenoon and was engaged in working about Myfarm. In the afternoon ho was suddenly stricken with the heart dieease and expired almost without a moment's warning. He was about 63 years of age, and leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his sudden death.

of the

When Mr. Black concluded, B. W. Hanna made a short speech, and tbe crowd dispersed.

W.

H.

Buckingham, Esq., for about

twenty years a resident ofthis city, during which time he has been actively engaged in the book trade, starts to-day for Washington, Connecticut, .his native State, expecting to make that hi3 future home. It is with extreme regret we bid him good-bye—the Prairie City reluctantly parts with such citizens as Wells H. Buckingham and his estima ble wife. We heartily wish them »uccess and happiness in their future life, and hope the attachments they have formed in our city may In a short time cause them to return.

"Mover"

odors wafted

by the gentle zephyrs, visiting alike the quiet homes of those who are sick, and thoie who expect to be, proceed from certain pig-pens, vaults and alleys, the proprietors of which, might by a little attention to cleanliness, promote the health of their own families—to say nothing about bow it would affect that of their neighbors.

Found

is evident that it is

not the high degree of temperature that causes sun-strokes, since men have been known to endure the heat of an oven while a chicken was roasting by their aide, and since zinc and iron founder! received no injury while toiling under 126° of heat. It is supposed that tbe malady is due to the chemical composi. tion of the sun's rays. Sun-stroke is a congestion of the brain, lungs and heart. It is almost always fatal with feeble persons. To avoid it, keep cool—that is, be slow in all movements, and shun the open snn as much as posible.

Butter

fPality'

Iced

Game.—Weare inform

ed that considerable business is being done in the way of cattle stealing, by persons pretending to be "movers," who we are told travel with stolen wagons and horses. On getting Into the river bottom they commence driving cows, and we presume some of the cows we hear inquired for have gone off with the "movers We bear of one "mover" who crossed the river at Tarre Haute with nary cow, but when he got to St. Mary's he had a herd of five, which we are told he sold and traded off on the way to and in the vicinity of Paris. Cows belonging to our citizens have been seen tied to the wagons of these "movers." We understand the same game is going on at other points along the river.

Body Found.—The

bruise near the eye, leads to the belief that in jumping in the river, head foremost, he struck a log and was stunned by the blow.

It appears that he went to the river against the consent of his parents, and alone, as no one can be found who accompanied him. His parents and sisters have our deepest sympathy, in thi3 sore affliction—the loss of an or.ly son and brother.

His sad fate should ba a warning to all boys, not only to obey their parents, but to abstain from bathing in the river, unless accompanied by those capable of taking care of them in the time of danger.

Dead

the celebrated

showman has returned from the almost impenetiable wilds of that portion of Green county which has been the least •uaceptible to the influences of "modern improvements," whither he has been to secure a pair of human curiosities. He found, about twelve miles from Bloomtold, among tbe hills, a male and female of the genus homo which, we are inclined to believe, are in reality, the greatest curiosities which have been developed for some years. These persons— we know not what else to call them—are respectively 21 and 22 years of age and only 29 inches in hight One of them, the male, is said to have nc spinal vertebrae. They have been reared in a wild state the parents having sixteen other children, let this singular pair take care of themselves. They are possessed of but little intellect, and yet seem to understand most that is said to tbem.

They eat but once a day, never before any person, and only the simplest food, in fact they have had no other. Mr. Felton is making arrangements to place them on exhibition within a few days.

in

Bed.—Saturday morn

ing, John Hoye, a painter, was found dead in his bed at tho Union House. He was in the employ of Mr. Robert Buckles, and last Monday had a slight attack of sunstroke. He went to work en Tuesday, and continued at work until the evening be fore hia death. Complaining of not feding very well, he was given in-door worlt.— Friday night, about twelve o'clock, a man sleeping with him was awakened and found him vomiting. After the vomiting he said he f.-jlt better, and went to another bed in the same room. Saturday morning his room-mate arose and dressed himself, and on going to arouse Hoye, found he was dead, Coroner Merry held an inquest, the jury returning a verdict in accordance with the above facts. The deceased was about fifty years of age, and had a family residing in Zanesville, Ohio. The family was telegraphed of the sad event, and the body interred, Saturday evening, in the cemetery.

SurroSKD Horse Thieves.—Saturday afternoon last a man ar.d woman, claiming to be married, but of which there is reason to doubt, arrived in town with two horses and wagon, and offered to sell the same to Mr. Tim Grover for $150. The fact that the property is worth double that sum, caused a suspicion that it had been stolen. Accordingly Mr. Grover followed tbem to the edge o* town, on the Lockport road, and attempted to arrest thom. The woman showed fight and assaulted Grover first with an axe and then with her hands. The man, however, did not attempt any resistance, and after a rough and tumble fight, the woman was conquered, and the team driven back to the Mayor's office. The pair claim to come from Danville, Illinois, and froro going to the Reservoir. Beyond this, nothing satisfactory cculd be elicited from a sharp series of questions. The wagon and horses are yet in the hands of the police awaiting further and more positive evidence.

Democbact.—^tLa

Democracy were summoned to tbe old Court House last evening by urgent ap« peals in the Journal and by the solemn tolling of the bell for about two hours. Two hundred persons put in an appearance and sat down in the yard, where they meditated for an hour or more, while a few others gradually camo in. JuBt before nine o'clock Bayless W. Hanna appeared on Btand and invited the audience to walk into the Court House, which invitation was accepted, and, when all were in, the room wa3 comfortably full. Mr. Hanna then, to tbe regret of all present, instead of speaking a piece, introduced General J. L. Black of Illinois who began with a personal allnsion to General Nat Kimball—which we reserve for future reference—and followed up with "the old, old story" oi terriblo outrages perpetrated on Southern rebels by "the Radical Congress." Read Andy Johnson's veto message and you have General Black's speech in bettor '?tyle than that gentleman gave it last night. It had all tho freshness of a last year's almanac, tho juiciness of a last year's potato and lie force of a Fourth of illy torpedo. It was remarkable only for the absence of argument and the presence of any amount of assertion.

Bathing.—The cheap and healthy luxury of a bath in the river is enjoyed by hundreds of men aud boys each night, after twilight. mm

Hct Ball.—To use a base ball term, the sun may now-a-days be catled a "hot bail.''

There was no meeting of the Board, of County Commissioners, Saturday, as announced. Mr. Brown was present, but tbe other members, from some cause, failed to appear. Mr. B. adjourned himself to next Saturday.

can be seen a venerable

It is the property of a citizen of this county, who prizes it highly, and has just had fifteen dollars' worth of repairs put on it.

Court House Square.

—It was suggested a short time since that a substantial stand be erected in the Court House Square, to be used by both political parties for large public gatherings. We renew the suggestion, and also that the Brass Bands of this city be invited to furnish selections of mu9ie one or two evenings each week. Perhaps some method can be devised for compensation, but to initiate the movement, we have no dcubt each of the bands will alternate their services. This will make our beautiful square an attractive place of resort and promenade these summer evenings, and our bands will have an opportunity of giving the people a taste of their superior musical talent. What say you, gentleman? Let it be perfected by the next moonlight nights. Moonlight and musie go well together.

Ob

motion oi George A. Hay ward it was ordered that the regular meetings of this club be helct on Thursday evening of each week. The clnb then adjourned to next Thursday night.

Sharp!—The Democracy of

this city, aware of the fact that the apathy and coldness existing for the Presidential nominees, would make an attempt at a ratification meeting, without outside help, extrahazardous, have deferred the same until this evening, after tbe session of tho Congressional Convention, when, with the help of the delegations from the several counties of this district, the grand "acquiesce" demonstration will be made.

Pugnacity.—Tho heated term and the free use of stimulating beverages aro beginning to manifest a very unpleasant and not altogether creditable effect in the development ot a pugnacious spirit. About sir o'clock Saturday afternoon a fight occurred on the corner of Fourth and Ohio steets between a prominent citizen and a respectable German cooper. This occurrence grew out of a political discussion and culmiuated in a knockdown. Severe blows and several contusions were given and received by both combatants. A very large crowd was attracted and for a time, there was imminent danger of a general melee, which could hardly have occurred without the most serious, if not fatal, consequences. We do not undertake to decide who began the fray, but we bollve both tho principals are heartily ashamed of it, and, in the hope that they will not repeat the performance, wo suppress their names for tho prosent. No political party has anything to gain by such a line of argument, and we trust that well disposed citizenp, of both parties, will use every proper effort to confine the conduct of the campaign on which we have entered to the use of such means only as shall be consistent with law, order and individual selfrespect.

At a later hour, near the same place, another fight occurred in whioh one of the combatants was Eeverely bruised,—• This encounter also originated in a too lavish use of stimulants, and had a semipolitical character. We suppress the names of the belligerents, because we hope and believe they will be sufficiently ashamed of their conduct to avoid a repetition of it and we appeal to all good citizens to frown down every manifestation of such political animosity as i? inconsistent with the preservation of peace and order and the good name of our city. This sort of ihing has gone quite far enough and should be stopped just hero and before worse consequences ensue.

Real Estate Transfers.—Tho following transfers ol real estate appear upon tho Recorder's books for last week

The Old Story.

A large and very spirited gathering, at the Union market, on Saturday evening, the first Radical meeting the campaign, was invaded and seriously disturbed by a gang of rebel loafers, whose infamous behavior the Rr/publican of yesterday chuckles over at great length and with many untruths and exaggerations. We are told by that paper that if speakers get up before a mixed audience and out* rage every sense of decency and propriety, they may expect to be interrupted.' If this scandalous sentence means that either of the speakers provoked interruption by indecent or improper Ian-, quage, it is a lie. But if it means—as is indicated by the previous statement— "that it was not until Col. Asper began with his ultra doctrines'' (of negro suffrage) that tbe meeting wa« interrupted —that rebels and copperheads will consider their -'sense of decency and propriety'' outraged by the advocacy of Radical opinions in St. Louis, then wo want to know it. If that is the idea—if unhanged rebels, and sneaking copperheads who deserve banging, think they can trample out free speech in this city of St. Louis— we warn tbem that the sooner they make the attempt in earnest the sooner they yrill get hart. And we can tell the Re. publican other thing if its infamons encouragement of rowdy violence should ever cause a serious contest—whioh we sincerely deprecate—the loyal men of St. Lauis will begin operations" by per. suading the Republican to stop inciting people to violation of law. At the next meeting of Redicala is thirdly we hope that the police will perform their duty or that enough live men will be present to make it Very unpleasant for scoundrels who undertake to disturb or interrupt the meeting.—St. Louis Democrat.
