.SETTLING.—The new building just erected by W. H. Sage, on Main street has settled several inches, crushing the show window of Watkins, Slaughter & Barton, adjoining, and otherwise injuring the huildfng.
THE MAD STONE.—A woman in the southern part of the city is trying the Virtue of Mrs. Taylor's mad stone, having been bitten last Thursday by a dog supposed to be mad. •*:—H—1—1
A COMPARISON of statistics shows that the weather this year is much hotter than at any time in the last. The heated term commenced earlier, has been more unbearable, and will last raueb longer than in 18C7.
FREE BATH.—A half-crazed old woman may occasionally be seen at the artesian well, with oboes and stockings off, and one foot up on the stand into which the water flows, bathing her lower limbs, totally regardless

BROKE HIS LEG. Saturday evening last, a saddle and harness maker, whose name we could not learn, stepped out of the door at the rear of the second story of Phoenix Row, Under Corinthian Hall, to the pavement below and broke his leg at the ankle.
MAJOR MAX F. A. HOFFMAN, our popular German candidate for Secretary of State, is in the city. HiB composition is Buch as to lose nothing by acquaintance, And the more thoroughly he mingles with the people, the larger will be the majority for our State ticket next October.

PEOPLE engaged in bugging their potato vines should exerciseB great cautionTwo women near St. Paul, Minnesota were killed a few days ago by poison received from these bugs. One ate her dinner without washing her hands after killing the vermin, and died in the most terrible agony. The other received the venom through sores in her hands and died immediately.
A MAN whom long experience has rendered sage, discourseth as follows about shoes. The attention of young ladies is especially invited: "Narrow shoes with high heels, which are now the fashion, are serious obstacles to a good-figure Without a solid basis it is impossible jto sustain the form in an erect posture, arid poised, as our young girls are, upon the stilts in fashion, it is not easy to preserve their equilibrium. They thus habitually bend forward or backward to the right or to the left, until in the course of time they become permanently misshapen in one direction or the other."
LOOK OUT FOR ANOTHER GIFT Swindlkb.—Messrs. Isaac E. Rose & Co.. of 814 Chestnut street, Philadelphia, have placed us, and doubtless thousands of others throughout the West, under deep obligations for an offer which, accepting their figures, would leave us Indebted to their generosity for exactly $43 worth of drv goods. They offer to send us an "Irish Poplin Dress Pattern valued at $48,'' on receipt of only $r, with the promise on our part to display our valuable dress goods to all our friends and acquaintances. They notify u« that '"two weeks is allowed after the receipt of the sealed order, to accept and remit the money, or reject tho offer.
We are rather inclined however, to distrust Messrs. Rose & Co.'s good intentions in this little matter. In the first place, we are afraid $48 is a pretty high valuation to put upon an Irish Poplin Dress Pattern—we even suspect that we could purchase a batter article in this oitv for less than the $5 they require us to send, and then we haven't a satisfacto ry assurance that Rose & Co., will send tho Dress Pattern as they agree tu do.
Besides we don believe their statement that our postmaster has recommended •js as just the person to display an Ir:sh Poplin Omw Fa«em to advantage."
LIGHTNING.—During the thundor-storm yesterday evening the lightning struck the flag-staff on the passenger depot rending it into splinters and slightly damaging the roof. Fortunately no one was hurt, notwithstanding a large num ber of people wero about the building at the time. Several felt the shock quite perceptibly. Our informant says the sensation was as if a needle had pricked him on top the bead.
Habeas CORPUS.—.losiab Norton, con fined in jail under indictment for assault and battery, witli intent to kill George Yost, wa3 brought before Judge S. Maxwell on a writ of habeas corpus, yea terday, and after investigating the whole matter, the bail was reduced to one hundred dollars, which he gave and was released. The offense alleged was commit ted near a year since. The State was rep resented by L. F. Muzzy, Esq., and the prisoner by Mesarii. Baird & Cruft.
ANOTHER HOT DAY.—Tho mercury yesterday indicated precisely the same temperature of tho day previous —98° to 100° in the ahade. Between three and four o'clock the joyful snund tf thunder fell upon this corporation of puffing, sp.ittering, sweltering, weltering humanity. It was followed soon nfter by a dashing summer rain, but not much change was made in the atmosphere. The bake turned to a boil, the blftze to hot steam.— Later in the evening, however, a pleasant breeze sprang up, and our readars we hopo had the luxury last night of pleasant. sleep.
POWDER BURNING.—An' ordinance is pending in the City Council of Indianapolis to prohibit the firing of cannon and Boman candles, or the lighting of bonfires within the city limits. Such an ordinance should be adopted by every city. Almost every citizen will join us in the assertion that the glory, enthusiasm, or call it what you will, docs not pay for the danger and loss of life and limb attending the firing of cannon. Within the past few days we have read of more than a dozen accidents, and several deaths from the premature discharge of cannon. In our own community we have had the terrible death of Rennor, and one year ago last Fourth, that of Daniel Reid. Those who saw these poor fellowB besmeared with blood and piteous in agony, wrestling with death, will never forgot the horrible scene. Let tho useless custom bo done away with. The same amount of money expended for music will do more in drawing crowds to political or other gatherings, cause ten times the en* thusiusm, and afford more real pleasure.
SUMMER FRUITS.—An exchange says that acids promote the separation of the bile from the blood, which is then passed from the system, thus preventing fevers, the prevailing diseases of summer- All fevers are 'bilious' that is, the bile is in the blood. Whatever is antagonistic of fever is cooling. It is a common saying that fruits fcrn 'cooling,' and also berries of every description ic is because the acidity

ing the blood. Hence the great yearning for greens, and lettuce, and salads in the early spring, these eaten with vinegar hence, also, the taste for something sour, the lemonades on an attack of fever. But this being the case, it i* easy to seo that we nullify the good effects of fruits and
sugar, or even sweet milk or cream. If wo eat them in their natural state, fresh( ripe, perfect, it is almost impossible to eat enough to hurt us, especially if we oat them alone, not taking an^/liquid with them whatever.
FOREPAUQH'S GIGANTIC MENAGERIE AND CIRCUS, as will be soon by reference to our advertisements, will pitch its colossal tent for the first time in Terre Haute, Monday July 27th. This establishment, beyond all doubt, is llie gracilesi. affair of the season. Few, if any, exhibitions, of its grandeur and magnificence, have ever been witnessed in the State of Indianfj while tho colloction animals is by iar the largest and most complete ever brought together and plaeod on exhibition in this country. Adam Fornpaugh, though anew man, comparatively, to this section of the country—this being his»eeond annual tour to America appears before us a model manager, having received an onviable reputation as the most successf.il and intrepid caterer of public amusements, known to the profession. He is at the head of a monster entertainment, accumulated at an enormous expenditure ol time and means, said to be the grandest equestrian and zoological aggregation of the nineteenth contary. In the roologicai department, which we notice, by the way, is entirely separate and distinct from from the circus, though but one prico of admission is charged, there is a choice excerpt of living wild animals, of tho rarest and most beautiful specimens, requiring twenty-two massive cages and dens to contain them, besides the collection of
Elephants, Camels and Dromedaries, the finest of the kind ever witnessed by mortal eyes. The Circus »s said to be largo well equipped and composed of artists of acknowledged ability.
Mr. Forepaugh believes advertising just what his exhibition contains—no more, no less—and entertains a supremo contempt for all third rate mountebank shows advertising throe times as much as they are able legitimately to perforin. It is, therefore, with pleasure we hail the advent of this grand first-class exhibition in our midst, and advise everybody to go and behold the wonders that God has made-
