The morning was ushered in spasmodic attempts at ringing of several church and fire bells and the firing of a national salute at sunrise. Beyond this there was less combustion of villianoos gunpowder than usually marks the occasion. Even the fire cracker -brigade was less demonstrative than usual and th$ number of these noisy little missiles patri otically exploded was not large. f80

noeantation of this magnificent spectacle and thrilling drama on Saturday nlgbt, was witnessed by the largest ayfllailce that has yet been called out, and tbe performance was a surprising improvement over, the two flrst evenings which, oi fcCflMQt9f the brief time allowed forjpre^imtaon, wight iu reality be tartoed re-, beaftals. But on Saturday evening the" full beauties of the drama, with its battle flcahes, home pictnres, and gorgeous tableaux, were brought out in bold relief. This was strikingly the case in the gunboat fight, in which a boat was exploded by a torpedo and still more so iri the great battle scene. At this point the au dieoce fairly'went wild with excitemrat, as the rebel force in the hand to hand eoafiict pressed back the Union troops, capturing the stars and stripes, and then the tjnion forces, rallying in turn, pressed the rebel horde back, regaining tne lost colors and capturing the rebel ban? ners. Then the touching scene of the sight after the battle, the wounded and dying calling for water and assistance, lead one to breath an involuntary prayer tliat oar country may never again be the scene of such terrible fields of carnage, Tho interest is much heightened by the apt that most of the actors are real solera, and not mere imitators. Aud {to this, may be attributed the remarkable naturalness of the military evolutions and eixercises^

1~t 1

The scene at the Andersonville prison pen is depicted in all its reported revolting cruelties, and few eyes can remain dry as the heart is rent with the terrible picture of suffering endured by the starv ing and emaciated prisoners, clad in rags and filth the fiendish murder of the little Drummer Boy, the rescue that comes at last, and the intense feeling culminates at the grand piece of acting on the part of the half crazed Mart Howard, when the flag of his country is exhibited to him. There are many other affecting scenes, such as the parting of parents with chil* dren, the departure of the regiment, the detection of Mart Howard as a spy, etc., 4j«at we cannot speak of all.

Although the drama is naturally serious, there is a rich vein of humor throughout Fattie Smith (M. O. Brown) with his awkward squad, convulses the audience as each night they get more ludicrously awkward the song and dance of the colored cook (G. W. Reifsnider) is an inimitable representation of negro character bat the harden of comicality falls on Uncle Joe (Capt. Harry McMullen) who, as. the faithful contraband, fairly loses his identity.

We should be pleased to speak of each amateur in detail, but nothing more is necessary than to say that the "cast" has been most judiciously made, and if one has^ succeeded in making a better impress siott than another, it was from the fact of having abetter chance for the display of histrionic ability. All have chosen the simplicity and ease of natural acting. In fafet, naturalness is a real necessity for the success'of the drama, for, with perhaps Ota exception, there is not much chance for the display of dramatic talent. This exception is the character of Martin How_ ard,:personated by Mr. Muscroft, the au. .thorof the drama, who renders it in a masterly manner, his whole soul seeming identified with the character, and at times hem an. electrical thrill through the entire audieia^e as he patriotically and ly displays bis devotteri tp the cause thojjnjpu. Major Lupton, of Indian* apolig, who kindly Accepted an invitatiop^ appeared on Friday and Saturday and made a fine impression as the, impulsive and patriotic Farmer How-

The g(rand tableaux area marked feature of the piece, and alono worth wit. nessing, but taken in connection with the drama and military spectacle excell any xhibition ever given in this city. Ex cecdingly fortunate have been those conn trolling the affair, to secure a number of the handsomest ladies of our town, without whom these tableaux would lose much of their beauty and grandeur.
