Grant's "Electioneering Toors.,? Tbo

Journal

approvingly copies the

following: 'lull-,'' "The Chicago Timet suggests.- that when Grant starts "On his electioneering tour be had better resigruir^^^are ito pay his own eSponsos."

GRANT'S "electioneering toara" were made some years ago and his election to the highest position which a grateful people can confer was placed beyond a possible contingency by those "toots" whichhave gom into history as the great-1 est achievements of any ago.

When GRANT, the modest unassuming officer, intontonly on serving!^ afflicted country in hor terrible need, regardless of consequences to himself, personally, made a "tour" to Fort Donelson and took a Democratic army With its hundreds of Democratic battle flags and vast acoumu* iation of Democratic "electioneering'' material, lie made, quite unconsciously, A Ions stride towards tho White House.

Whoa GRANT, at tho end of a cam paign which will stand in history With the best planned and most brilliantly ex & ruted campaigns of NAVOLKON or WKT.I.VNOTON, opened the navigation of the Mississippi by tho capture of Vicksburg and tho Democratic army arid "electioneering" material of PttttnSKToN, made another "n\arnh" toWai'sfe tie Whito Honse, and gained another title to the .'ternal hatred ol the Democratic part).

When GRA.NT drove the Democratic army from

tl\i

front of .lJhattanooga,

chased them from their intronchments on Alissionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain, and burled them, a disordered, demoralized rabbio, from all their strongholds, he was unwittingly making a most.effective "electioneering tour," was taking up an impregnable position ftr'ttiS'hearts of the people, was striding towards- the White House and adding to his vast"'legacy of Democratic hatred.

The limits of this article forbid "even the most cursory glance at the greater portion of GBANT'B "electioneering touTt." They were made on hnndreds of fields and always against armies of Democrats with Democratic arguments*"electioneering" documents—in their hands. Wherever the quiet, self-possessed, modest aokUer "toured" he found the Democracy and found them but to capture them.' Thus he lcept' the even tehor of^^tt way until one April morning In 1965' he 'toured" to a little, gnarled and knotty old Apple Tree near Appomattox Court House where he met the. Detilo^ratic Chief and received from turn, the sutyender of the Grand Army .of Deroocrati with their enormous array of Democratic arguments which four years of terrible war bad proved fallacious and uateoabi?. That was U. S. GRANT'Slast "electioneer-* jng tow 1" Then it was that the loyal people of America decreed in their grateful baarU that the Country's Savior should bo the nations Chief. Then, too, it was that tho foiled and beaten Democracy awore in their wrath th*VU»gtand est hero of the age should either eoil hie proud name and damn himself to eternal infamy by accepting theit jtOlitical embrace or ho shouia^vercwseto be hunted and bate^l by the jwifty^fiMe ^Sfiiprotida eel distinction and peculiar giory fs that it
