PSBSONAL .—The Democracy have grace fully shown their appreciation of the value of printer's ink in the nomination of James B. Edmunds, Ksq, editor of the Journal, at the head of their list of martyrs. Mr. Edmunds will take the role assigned to the entire satisfaction of the most exacting of his party friends.

THB MUBDZBBB STBYBNB.—The Journal learns a strange story in regard to Stevens, the escaped prisoner. It appears that before killing Beeves, he was pay ing his addresses to a young lady residing a few miles north of the city. It is now statod that he went there and spent all last Sabbath in her company, and that be is seen lurking about the neighborhood. It is also said that the young lvdy furnishes him with his daily supply of food, and warns him by understood signals of approaching danger.— We place but little reliance on the story, as an officer like John Kizer would hardly allow such a prisner to habitate about the country with such impunity. There must be some mistake about it.
FOUBTH OV JUL?.—At a meeting of the Committee of general arrangements for the Fourth of July celebration, held at the Mayor's office, Friday evening, June 19th, 1868, the foUpwing sub-committees were appointed:

Col. Wm. S. McLean.
The Journal asserts that ''the Yigo delegation, by their lukewarmness, slaughi tered Col. McLean," in "the Gosport Convention."
If it were possible for any Democratic paper to speak the truth in any matter concerning a political opponent, we should he astonished at so gross and flagrant a misrepresentation as the above. It is well known that Col. MCLBAN had the united support of the Yigo delegation so long as he permitted his name to be used. The record of the ballotB shows that the Colonel withdrew his name under such circumstances as would have induced almost any other man to continue the contest. His object in so doing is dearly and forcibly stated in the following extract from the brief but eloquent and magnanimous speech delivered in the Convention ••The principal wish that animates ine here to-day, tne chief desire that influences me now, is to see a harmonious, a speedy and satisfactory nomination by this Convention, let that nomination lie conferred upon whom it may. No other kind of nomination would I accept at the hands of this Convention.
Believing, Mr. President, that the withdrawal of my name, as a candidate in this contest, would tend to the harmony of the Convention, would effect a speedy and more satisfactory nomination here, at the sacrifice of whatever personal in terest or ambition I may have, I desire now to withdraw my name as a candidate before this Convention."
By his generous and patriotic action on that occasion. Col. MCSLXAW has not only enhanced the respect and esteem in which he was held by his old friends who knew and appreciated his talents and worth, hut has gained hosts of new friends, who not less than the old, will avail themselves of some opportunity that msy ocoar to evittoe their regard for him aa a man, and their admiration of the spirit of rare magnanimity which dictated his ooorse in the Gosport Qonven* twn.
