Some of tie leading Republican counties are already entirely out of debt, with a surplus fbr roads and bridges agd other public improvements, ia the treasury. NOTE—De«aocraticcounti«3 in italics. Of tho sixty-tbree counties that reported the rate of tamattao thirty-four are Republican Counties and twenty-nine Democratic. The average rate of taxation in Republican counties Is one dollar and fifty cents on each one hundred dollars of taxable property, in Democratic Counties one dollar andHVenty cents. Some of the Auditors did not give the rate of taxation for all purpeses
including State and county bat the neglect to do so dees not change the correct average.
If all the counties had reported, the figures would show a greater average in Democratic oountles, and a smaller ohe in Republican. The reports made, however, are sufficient to show conclusively that where the Democratic party is in the ascendant and has an opportunity of bringing about retrenchment, the taxes are uniformly heavier that Democratic counties employed mere substitutes during the war^ and unhesitatingly plunged into debt, and levied heavy and burdensome 1 3 at taxes, to keep out of the armysfot.6q
