WEEKLY EXPRESS
Wednesday Morning, fApril 22d, 1868
KGENTS WANTED.
We want agents In every township, and neighborhood of this Congressional D« trict to canvass for the Campaign Wukly Express- Liberal inducements offered Apply immediately.
T. M. Doughty, a well-known citizen, long a resident of this city, died |Mon day morning after a liugering illness.
(jolobes.—The bright sun and genial atmosphere of yesterday brought many l&diG? out on the street. A large propor tion of thoge we met were colored ladiesOolored white and red, cosmetically.
Public Speaking.—Hon. F. M. Meredith will address the citizens of Middlestown, Prairie Creek Township, Saturday, May 2d, at 2 o'clock, p. M., on the political topics of the day. All are invited.
The two Terre Haute boys, Lehart and Ewing, who escaped from the Warden, at Indianapelif, whilo being transferred from the Penitentiary to the House of Refuge, were seen in tbis vicinity, we learn, last 8unday.
True!—Will Pound, of lue Indianapolis Commercial, litters ti truism wheri bo says that "city editors can be governed by no specifil or general rules, and that they will get about the same amount of blame whether tbcy do well or ill."
CoMUOK 1'leab Court.—Little business of public interest transpired in tbo Court yesterday. Alien Keiger, who •o me if toe since shot at John Snodgras?, was required to give bond in the sum of $100 tor bij^good behavior in the future.
United States Court.—In malting up tbajtiHes for this court, which convenes at Indianapolis on tbs tlrst Tuesday in May, our fellow-citizens John Hnney and Perry E. Tuttle have been summoned to f.erve—the first named on the grand jury and the latter on tho petit jury.
Heailtht.—Previous to yosterday no interment had been made in tho city cemetery for ten days. While physicians, undertaker* and the sexton may not consider this city a profitable place for the prosecution of their reepnrtico callings, we congratulate tho public uii the general good health no"W existing.
ThS KauiT.—The Greencastle Banner learns from &r. R. 8. Ragau, awell known fruit grower of Putnam county, that tba peaches and apples wore not killed by the late cold weather, though some other varieties, such a3 fpears and cherries, are undoubtedly injured to some extent. He thinks that, so far, the .prospeot is good for an abundance.
The Postal Law of Congress forbids tbe opening of a newspaper by a person not addressed or authorized under penalty of $20 fine, and stealing the same is punishable by Imprisonment.
Those who have been in the habit of ate»}ipg the Expasas heretofore will do well to emember the abeve item, which wd clip from an-exchange. Persons frequent" «omplftiu of their newspapers not reaching thfCJ, :but wa hope they Tvill have no otfcaslon to oomplain in ftitu.re.
J-'Uf1"} V- IJamm Henrt—not the one who Aides ia this city, but a dirty acallftfag from Honey Creek township, was commit* ted by Esq. Donetiis to jail yesterday under bonds of $100 for selling a lot of Wood that did not belong to him and pocketing the proceeds—four dollars. The wood belonged to his half brother George Henry, who had brought it up and thrown it off just outside the city, intending to bring it when tho roads were bad and the demand better.

BOYS.—It any one desires to ascertain bow many boys there are in town out of employment and willing to work, lot bim insert an advertisement of "boy wanted." A gentluman tried it restorday and was overrun with applicant.'. One disappointed boy came to our office to see if there were any other situations open, and stated that although ha responded to the nd vertuement above mentioned early in tbe morning he found the boys "thicker than black birds."
Quits a bun was made on tbe County Treasurer's office Monday, not to dr»w out of Treasurer Shepherd*s safe, but to put, money in—it being the last day for paying taxes beforo tho ten per cent, penalty was put rn. The Treasurer and deputies wpre kept exceedingly busy in receiving greenbacks, go very bandy to have In the house of every well regulated family, and yet so essential for the oiling ol our State and county machinery. So great wai the rush that the clerk* in the Auditor's office had to occasionally ae« sist in relieving tbe pressure. Those anxious to "call at the Captain's office and settle" crowded upon each other's neelF, taking tbeir tnrn like "going to mill." They embraced several women—we don't mean to say the men embraced the wo-men--old, young^and middle aged. They had come together like good citizens to deposit their mites towards paying the necessary expenses of tho current year. Some of the mites were not very trifling either, tut were good sized paokages of the circulating medium.
A study of human nature has «ver been to us one of interest, and tbis can be indulged in, very frequently, to the best advantage, in a crowd. Each countenance we beheld \e8terday, 'as its proprietors issued from tha Treasurer's office, Worn an ay press ion of r«l\«f s.s if a weight bad been taken from the mind—also a load from tbo pocket, perhaps—while la tbe b^pd was a piece of paper wiicb was clutched with all the energy appar«ntlyrwbicb drowning men are said to be imbued wt ea oatcbing at straws. How happy and Uutdkful tbe people seemed to feel—thankful that thoy had property upon which to be taxed, but still more thankful that they held In their hands tbe Treasurer's receipt for their taxe* without taring lb* «wt«d tbe penalty for delay. The Fbuit.—The people tftlfrejolco to learn that the inforiqption comee from many Iwinis^n fife jhiiaify thfft'ihe has fortunately survived the recent cold siege, and the prospect is ndw good for full orop of all varieties.

CroPc. —After repeated failure^ in the crops for three successive seasons every one will rejoice that the prospect bid8 fair for a bountiful wheat barvpst this oar. We have encouraging report* from nearly every direction. Tbe early spring raits seem
f.o
have done much good in
re setting that which was' mostly frozen out the ground, and if tbo weather con tinues fnvorable as it has begun there is every evidence that we wilt have as large if not tbe largest crop ever produced in the country.
Notwithstanding the extreme drouth last fall which delayed seeding to a very Into period in tho season, there has been more ground put. in wheat than any previous year. Thero are of course, as is the case every season, roports from some sec. lions of a reverse character—that tho crop is a failure-^-but this does ffot effect the country generally. This condition is true mostly in those neighborhoods, where tbe cause may be traced to the neglect or unskillful manner of tbe farmer ia.&eed* icg
With the return or' good crop?, the lightening of taxation, an economical administration of the general Government, tbe decapitation of A. Johnson and tbo consequent return of peace acd quiet to the countiy, we will soon asperience something like "thegood old'times."

Samael Paddock 78. Rober .*?, Had*, son—appeal. This is the wall known cow case—a 'suit for the possession bf a cow, of which we made full mdntioa at* the time theease was tried before Esq. Sftjitb* It will be remembered Samuel Paddock and Bichard Lidstar each had a ccfvt to stray away. Lidster found, as bs stippcsed, his own cow and afterwards sold it to Col. B. N. Hudson. Mr. P. accidentally finding tbe name in Hudson's possession claimed it as his own, brought suit of replevin—Esq. Smith decided in Paddock's favor, and yesterday tbe ca»« came up In the Circuit Court on Hudson's appeal, bofore a jury of "twelve unbiassed citizens Some thirty witnesses were examinedthose for each party swearing with equal positivoness thai the cow belonged t/-th3 person in whose interest tbey were summoned. It is a kind of mistaken identity affair. Tbe case was conducted by Col. McLean for the plaintiff, and Messrs. H.
Scott and R. W. Thompson for the defendant The knotty question was discussed by the jury in their room, near two hours resulting in a verdict in favor of the pluintiff, Mr. Paddock, ns the rightful owner
Tbis case rsmiad* us of the old wood cut caricatures we used to see, when e. boy, representing two litigants and the lawv&rs One »cene represented tbe plaintiff pulling at the bores of a cow and the defendant tugging in *n opposite direction at the tail, while two lawyer* were looking complacently on. In the second scene, the litigants have palled tbe horns and tail out, and the lawyers on each side are milking away with all their might. So in this case, we should not be surprised if the lawyers got the best part of the cow/
