Senator Hendricks for his opposition to the extra-judicial, iron-clad oath passed by Congress, several years ago, is well answered by the remarks of the Senator on the question, as reproduced and emphasized by the

Whoever cornea here being elected and having the qualifications prescribed by the Qo^itutionhas a right to his seat and his State may well demand it for him. The right of his State to be represented by him is conferred by the Constitution, and cannot be denied or impaired by any rule of this body or by any act of Congress

It strikes us that all sensible people will consider the Senator's reasons as ample and conclusive. Any man elected Senator, "having the qualifications prescribed by the Constitution, has a right to his seat." This doctrine is unimpeachable and the

FRUIT TREES.—Mr.

Editor: Wo wish

little more about fruit trees. In

our last we spoke of planting fruit trees. In this we propose to say something about the way the farmer procures them, which may be of some benefit to them in the future. As we consider they are often imposed on by peddlers and pretended tree agents, who represent that their nursery is the largest in the country, and that they cannot procure fine fruits from any other source, often making the statc^ mout that they cultivate their thousands of acres in their Nursery, when it is a well known fact that there is no Nursery in thi& country, or any other, that contains much over 300 acre?, and that very seldom over one-fourth or one-third is ever covered with young stock ready for market at any one time. Yet these smooth tonguod impostors tell the farmer a falsehood to get to sell them, often some fruit trees at a high price, which, three times out of Four will prove almost worthless in this climate as they generally buy of the Nurseryman such stock as he has a surplus, ef which bis home customers would act buy. There are other disadvantages ho labors under. The trees are often shipped long distances and the roots laid out exposed to the drying winds 6t the frost over night. In the latter case they look well enftugh except to* tfcS" expefTenced eye.—

The purchaser will take thom bflmeand they, will leaf out, but make no wood and then die. The planter will-wonder what is the matter with his trees the great trouble is be has given bis order to

The Grander Trial.

The St. Louis Democrat says that "while the solemn inquest goes on in the Senate Chamber another and grander trial will take place, not before fifty-six Senators in court of impeachment, but be fore thirty millions of people throughout the land."

This is the proper view of the subject for the accused is the servant of the pee pie. Every American citizen is one of his judges. In the palaces of the rich and in tho cabins of the poor, by the shores of the Atlantic, by tho banks of the Mississippi, and within sound of the pulsations of the Pacific, in the silent thought of individuals, in the conversa tiou of citizens, in the crowded markets, and in the thronged meetings, the groat trial will go on, day by day.

The verdict of the Senate will determine the official career of the accused, but the verdict of the people will pass into history and make him honorable or infamous in allgtime to come. The Senate will decide upon a narrow question of law, the pec pie will pass upon the whole official con duct of

ANDREW JOHNSON

whether such a man ought to continue the President of the United States. In that greater trial, the character and motives of the man will be weighed, his pledges and his performance will be put Sid« by side his opportunities and his obligations will not be forgotten in judging £Hf his acts the honor of the nation as welj as its law and its safety will be remembered and with the whole Executive career of
