CUBE of the

Ntiijal catawE'^consists in inflammation, which begins behind and a little above the veil of the pftTftte, and extends upwards from thence 4rito the nose. The inflamluaiioa is not confined to the nasal cavi ties but extends frequently to the air cavities, called antruma and sinuses, which cover a considerable portion of the face, mid extend to the lower part of the fore* head.—PuMon3 sometimes fool as though their whole face were involved in the diat-Hse, and were almost in a state of rottonnes1, so great is the amount of matter discharged from the head. Such free discharges cannot be wondered at when we reflectthat all the air cavities in the face are lined with the same mucuous membrane which lines the nose, and that they all communicate with tho nasal cavities. Wo breathe through the nose, hence that part of the mucous membrane bes comes injured, first from suddon changes, in tho temperature of the air, or from any irrititing matter it may contain. The menibrune lining the nasal passages also extends downward, lining the throat, larynx and bronchial tubes. The symptoms of catarrh vary in different persons, cp two ever being atfected exactly alike, and the disease ic mot with in various forms am! stages. In the first there is merely a discbarge of tho straw colored mucous, which accumulates in the posterior nares, or above and behind the soft ^palate, and is hawked or cleaned out from titni! to time during the day In some cases there are eores formed in side of the nose, and the secretions become dry and hard, riquiring ulmost constant attention to keep Uio nose free. Then again, a false membrane eccreted from the diseased lining, which the patient removes from time to timo. In the last stages the seretions from tho head drop down into the throat, Oftea tlio fnucuous membrane becomes uleorateil, ahd.th« dischargo libtf' pus. When this occurs there is often loss of a^ncl], and tbo discharge has an offenjivJjvlot•- epecially is this the case when tile ulceration cats thiough the membrane and attacks tho bone, forming garies of thu hon©: if
The catarrh often creates a perpetual desire to swallow, and gives the feeling, as patients express it "as if something wero sticking in the upper \part of the throat." Many times tho patient can only braithu with the mou^h open. Upon arising in the morning.a great effort is required to clear tho head and throat of the puriform matter which has becoruo secreted during the night. Thure ia occasionally a feeling of pressure and tighti tiess across the upper part of the nose, and tho base of tho brain sometimes suffers in such away as tj induce bead&cho, vertigo und contusion. The ey«s frequently suffer by the catarrh closing tho lachrymal duc(.(ii little canal that carries the tear to the nostril,) causing the t«yo to matterate. The delicuto lining membraue of the lids becomes inilanied' tho come a of the eye becomes dry, shriveled and cloudy, and if tho catarrh is not subdued the pight will soon becamo imparcd. The Inflammation sometimes gots into the ausiachian tribes, the mouths of which are behind Mnd a little ubuvo thepalatu, and extends up the lining membrane to the drum of the ear, causing pain or deafness, and occasionally both. In addition to this catalogue or evils there is often added enlongution of tho uvula, soreness of the throat, a cough, loss of appetite, tbs sufferer becomes bilious, sallow, dejected, and low in strength and flg.ih.
Thu promoting causes of catarrh are too numerous to iribttllon in this already long article. Suffieo it to say that repeated colds in tbo head, neglected until they become chronic, und scrofulous taint ot the system1, are among tho prominent causes ol this disease.
It often follows scarlet fever, rash, measles, putrid, sorn throat, diptheria, &c.
Tho general practitioner has heretofore pronounced Catarrh incurable, or when consulted in relation to it^ has been satisfied in prescribing some snuff, or squirting a iittio warm water up the nose, which of course does no 'od—tho first, in some instances, actually doing harm.
Unfortunately, catarrh is too generally ueglecte,d by tho paiieat as well, until it is ioit- sight of in tho tlisae^tous oonsequencos to which it givca rise.
Catarrh is both a general as well as a ccal disease, and should have both a general and local treatment. So successful has been th* method I adopted for its cure that I do not believe it will fail in one case out of a hundred, when properly and faithfuHyapplied. 1 regard catarrh as the great feeder of pulmonary irritation, and 1 do not believe 1 can by any means so effectually guard the lungs from disease as by cutting off the catarrhal affections.
