had the pleasure, yesterday, of looking carefully through Johnson's Natural History, a beautifully illustrated werk containing 1,500 life-like engravings, in two large royal octavo volumes, by Hon. S.G. Goodrich (Peter Parley). We have not ft* years examined any scientific work work with so much satisfactien. It is the first work ever published claiming to be "comprehensive, scientific and popular, illustrating and describing the animal kingdom, with its wonders and curiosities, from man, through all the divisions, classes and orders, to^the animalculse in a drop of water^ /t

The"1 ehgravings are the work of" the finest artists, strikingly lifelike, and adorn every page. Tbe paper is fine andthe typography and binding everything that coufu bo desired It ought to be in the book case of every intelligent family.

Considering the great expense and la« bar incurred in the preparation of such a work, it is exceedingly cheap, and, on this .very account, many a family in bumble "circumstances may enjoy tho advantages of possessing it.

It is the crowding master-pice of its good and great author, whose nom de plume of "Petb

Efe represented himself as the agont of a Chicago Lottery. He offered the ladies a chanco to "draw" on the spot, and if the article drawb was not desired, no money was to be paid.— But .in every case the articles named on the card were worth ten times the price of a tidbet and the money "Was eagerly paid, with the assurance on the part of the oily individnal that the goods would arrive by Express on Saturday next.— Some of the ladies even went out to their neighbors to borrow the money, and the neighbor women in turn became patrons, and could scarcely await the coming of their husbands to rolate their good fortune. The latter, however, understood the situation, and we opine these ladies, some ofthem^good church members, will not soon invest again in lottery schemes.

chools.—Every

S

man has

an interest in the community in which he resides, and helps to shape its charac ter. There is no one interest of any community of more vital importtyice than the school interest, for food and raiment for the body are of no more importance than nutriment for tbe mind and soul.

As citizens wo attend jtp pur daily nvo* cations, trade, commerce, agriculture, mechanical industry,-and jhg "watious- arts and professions with great assiduity for two obvious purposes, namoly, to provide for our families a competence.%n$l to educate our children. All this is right. .It is oiir duty.1" It is obviously oiir 'dtaty to do whatever we can to render our schools efficient and successful—to foster and sustain them—to show a sympathy with tho teaob«w,5 and in every^a^ to -evince a deep merest in ttyejr au{jpo|t usefulness, that our children mSy be eficotjraged and stimulated in their studies, and led tt appreciate the value of their privileges.

This canuot be accomplished without frequent in terco'uf so vfib thctatiolicr and children in the scene of their mutual labors—tho School-room. if tWy were aware of tho encouragement and stimultiS that frcquent|vi8its afford the teacher, we have no doubt Ihat'fnsny :iw»o of our good citiiebs would often l)tS' found witnessing t^e exercises pf ihe schoo-room. If children, under-the instruction and discipline^of a.faithful.teacher, aro dally ims provirig, becoming !wiiir «nd feeder, how a word of generous approval cheers tho heart of that teacher when fitly spoken by a parent or guardian. It is impossible that the pi^)il should be met by the teacher with indifference, when tho fathe^ or mother has_ eammujiedfivitli him, and he has been permitted to take the gauge of parental affection. We all have a knowledge of tho tempor an d.#s posit ion of our own children, that months :if care* ful observation*will hardly communicate to the teacher. Our advantages and rfteans of gaining" this "kno\Vl&flgo «rn far superior t'6bis, and,.it will greatly facilitate bis labors, and increase their productive value, if we give him what insight we can into their attainments-ta^W general character.

If in this way wc can enable tbe teaelior to find easier avenues to the mind and. heart of tbe pupil, if we cam1 aid him in gaining admittance to the inner sanctuary, we will do much to supply the want of tact and judgment and experience, to which many young teachers mu9t attrib* ute their want of success. Let r.ot our first interview with the teacher bo one to which wo are driven by exasperated pas» sion, provoked it may be, by the infliction of necessary punishment, In a majority of cases, doubtless, this paihful( result, painful both to our'own sensibilities and to the friendly feblings of tho teacher, might have been avoided, had we seasonably cultivated his acquaintance and given him our hearty co-operation.

Do wo say we have no time to visit the schools Tlie excuse is frivolous. For what else have wo no time 1 We.look with rigid scrutiny when about to make deposits of pecuniary interest, or to visit our property. We would accuse ourselves of blameworthy carelessness, if we neglected to look after any worldly interest, however inmgniflcftnt^fthBiti w6 iffiitl committed to another's trust. We inspect with jealous watch tho conduct of our agent, and ate not disposed to ovorlook lightly any derilection in his assumed capacity. Our property is at stake, and wo will not, as careful businesss men, subject it to hazard^ by the blunders of ign6ranceor the ifiistalccS'^ of &irolo?Bnes9. And this is well. Aro wo equally alert and vigilant aijid untiring, when a value is at stake, as trahscendently superior Ho any of the means of earthly prosperity, as tho sou lis Superioi- to thor. !body? Let us awake *tfi Iodic to our interests.

The present school term will close with this "week. On Thursday and Friday there is to be an oral examination of all the schools. Parents and friends arp invited Let ufe all go aihd «tBe scftooTs in their working time, equipped for toil not decked for show.
