Ele represented himself as the agent of a Chicago Lottery. He offered the ladies a chanco to "draw" on tbe spot, and if the article dfawh was not desired, no money was to be paid.— But in every case the articles named on the card were worth ten times the price a ticket and "the money was eagerly paid, with the assurance on the part of the oily individnal that the goods would arrive by Express on Saturday next.— Some of the ladies even went out to their neighbors to borrow the money, and the neighbor women in turn became patrons, and could scarcely await the coming of their husbands to relate their good fortune. The latter, however, understood the situation, and we opine these ladies, some of them

A BOOK

JOB

HOME EDTTCATIOH.—We

had the pleasure, yesterday, of looking carefully through Johnson^ Natural History, a beautifully illustrated work containing 1,500 life-like engravings, in two large royal octavo volumes, by Hon. S.G. Goodrich (Peter Parley). We have not fdt years examined any scientific work work with so much satisfaction. It is the first work ever published claiming to be "comprehensive, scientific and popular, illustrating and describing the animal kingdom, with its wonders and curiosities, from man, through all the divisions, classes and orders, to^the animalculse in a drop pf water,'! -A

The* engravings are the work of the finest artists, strikingly life-like, and adorn every pige. The paper is fine andthe typography and binding everything that couTO. bo desired. It ought to be in tbe book case of every intelligent family.

Considering the great expense and la bor incurred in the preparation of such a work, it is exceedingly cheap, and, on this very account, many a family in hum* ble'circumstances may enjoy the advantages of possessing it.

It is the crowding muster-pice of its good and great author, whose nom de plume of "PETR

PARLET"

appears upon

the title page of more than a hundred different volumes for the young, with an annual sale of over 300,000 copies.

Mr. D. W. Solliday is tho gentlemanly agent of the work, and is, at the present time, calling upon our citisens in order tQ show it.-

Buy it, parents, if you would furnish your children with a rich treasury of most entertaining and useful knowledge.

Notice is hereby given that the Union County Executive Committee will meet at the New Court Houae at 1 o'clock p. si. on Saturday, Dec. 21at, 1867. The object is to make the necessary arrangements for a County Convention to be held prior to the State Convention which has been called by Jacob T. Our exchanges have swelled the

THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.—Every

man has

an interest in the community in which he resides, and helps to shape its charac ter. There isnd one interest of any community of more vital importance than the school interest, for food and raiment for the body are of no more importance than nutriment for t^ie mind and soul.

As citizens wo attend ti our daily avocations, trade, comm^rce^ agriculture, me chanica) industry,'®™! fbe ivarious* arts and professions with great assiduity for two obvious purposes, namoly, to provide for our families a .competency.ajijfl to educate our children. All this is right. -It is otir duty »It is-obviousljrour 'cEuty to do whatever we can to render our schools e£* ficient and successful—to foster and sustain them—to show a sympathy with the teaohew? and in everyway to evince a deep merest in t^eir sugpjojt find usefulness, tbirbur children mfiy be e'nednrnged and stimulated in their studies, and led JO appreciate tbe value of their privileges.

This canuot be accomplished without frequent-intercoufse vfrti* tho tesMbor and children in the scene of their mutual labors—the school-room. If they were aware of tho encouragement and stimulus that frequentjvisits afford the tenoher, we have no doubt that fnany iwwe "f our good cititebs Would'often' found witnessing t^ie oxercisespf the schoo-room. If children, under the instruction and discipline^ a faithful teacher, are dally itos proving, betomirifc swiler and -i)eller, how word of generous approval cheera tho heart of that teuclier when fitly spoken by a parent or guardian. It is impossible that the pi^)il should be met by the teacher with indifference, when tho fathf^.er raotbor hasVc^mmuiiej|Esv|th him, and he has been permitted to take the gauge of parental affection. We all-have a knowledge of the temper atid cHspoeitron of our own children, that months :f care^ ful ob^otvation^will Hardlt r.ommunicate to the teacher. Our advantages and ifiearis of gaining' this "knovVl&flgo «rn far superior to his, ami. it will greatly facilitate his labors, and increase their productive value, if we give him what insight we can into their attainments ivrfd genercharacter.

If in this way we can enable the teacher to find easier avenues to the mind and heart of the pupil, if we can? aid him in gaining admittance to tho inner sanctuary, we will do much to supply the want of tact and judgment and experience, to which many young teachers must attribute their want of success. Let r.^t our first interview with the teacher bo one to which we are driven by exasperated pas» sion, provoked it may be, by the infliction of necessary punishment. In a majority of cases, doubtless, this painful_ result, painful both to bur'own sensibilities and to the friendly fe&lings of the teiicher, might have been avoided, had we seasonably cultivated his acquaintance and given him our hearty co-operation.

Do we say we have no tivte, to visit tho schools? Tlie excuse is frivolous. For what else have we no time? .Wo.look with rigid scrutiny when about to make deposits of pecuniary interest, or to visit our property. We would accuse ourselves of blameworthy carelessness, if we neglected to look after auv worldly interest, however insigniflcrtnt,Hha6 w6 ffitl committed to another's trust. We inspect with jealous watch the conduct of our agent, and are hot disposed to overlook lightly any derilection in his assumed apacity. Our property is at stake, and we will not, as careful businesss men, subject it to^hazard,. by the blunders pf ignorance or-the 'ifiistakdg*' of (farolojSness. And this is well. Are wo equally alert and vigilant aad untiring, when a value is at stake, as trauscendently superior 'to any of the means pf earthly prospyriyr, as tho soulis Superior to thof'bodyt^ JyJetsus aw'ake anjl lotk to our rfitdt'ests.'

The present school term will close with this week. Oh Thursday and Friday there is to be an oral examination of all the schools. Parents and friends .arc invited Let "iii all go*ahd *tbe spools in their working time, equipped for toil not decked for show.
