WEEKLY EXPRESS

Wednesday Morning, Nov. 2Tlli, 1887

A cold, damp day was yester'Jay,

endiDg with an icy, drizzling rain, dark and gloomy enough to give the jolliest man in town the azures—just such weather as to cause rheumatic and neuralgic remedies to be in demaud.

fgy A new Post Office has been estab liehed at Young's Station, a few miles south of this city on the E. & C. Railroad called Readsville, with Mr. George Plannett as Postmaster.

A. A. Talmage has been appointed

Assistant Supt., W. Gumming, Train Dig patchor, and W. S. Mason,'Agent in this city, of the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Railroad, all taking effect yesterday.

jgy In Monticollo, recently, a man sold a tract of land for $5,900, payable in fifty-nine annual payments of $100 each, with ten per cent, interest from date.— Who has tho beat of such a bargain

The Democracy of Warrick coun

ty hold a convention on the 14th of De* cembor. It i9 time the Republicans were up and moving in all the counties in tho State. The Copperheads are^vide awake everywhere.

t®"A man named Rodgofs was run over and killed by a train of carf on tho Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad, at Kendallvilie, on Monday last. He attempted to get his dog from tho track while the train was approaching and lost his life thereby. He leaves a wife and several children.

A destructive fire occurred at

Staunton, twelve miles east of this city, about three o'clock Saturday morning, destroying Wardlow's and J. M. Lucas' stores. In the latter was kept the post office, and tho mail matter, together almost the entire stock of goods in both stores were consumed. Loss about $3,500, with very little insurance. The fire is attributed to an incendiary.

t&~\Ve give a large space of our paper to-day to the publication of the President's Message to Congress delivered on yesterday afternoon. A portion of the messago was published in the Cincinnati papers of yesterday in advance of its delivery by some sort of management. The Cincinnati papers were the only ones, in tho West, which published in advance of delivery. We give the message to our readers as soon as any journal in tho State and in as complete shape. .. figff* We saw yesterday the silver medal awarded by the Stato Fair to Mr. L. Kissner, who exhibited the best Church Organ—a Carhart & Needham instrument. It is handsomely executed, of pure silvor, and valued at $30. In this connection we may mention that Mr. Kissner has a large stock of theso instruments and any of our readers who may want an organ or melodoon of superior excellence, will find the Palace of Music the place to select one.

ggg1" Major John E. Simpson has been appointed Superintendent of the Indiiinapolis and Terre Haute Railroad. The Indianapolis Herald says Mr. Simpson is a gontlemanly, efficient and urbane official, and his appointment will give the greatest satisfaction.—Journal.

Major John E. Simpson is the Assistant Superintendent of the Terre Haute and Indianapolis Railroad, and has charge of the interests of tho road at the east end of the line. Mr. Charles R. Peddle, of this city, is the Superintendent of the road.

How TO KEKP WAKII FEET.—In wiater weather all classes of people are troubled with cold'feet. All classes have the icy horror alike and no shoo and boot dealer has yet succeeded in furnishing a preventive. A youug lady in this city, however, has tried the following recipe, and declares that it "works like a charm." Tho method is thi?: "I am troubled with cold feet, but I manage to keep warm by lying in bed every morning until my mother has built a rousing fire and propped breakfast. 1 then get up, place my feet on the front of the stove, eat my morning meal, read the news, and after warming some flannaU and wrapping them about my 'poor feet,' returned to bed, where I remain until nearly noon. 1 repeat this every twenty-four hours, and find it very comfortable. I think I shall survivo."

COLDS

IN THK

HEAD.—The sudden

changes in the weather are apt to cause disagreeable colds in the head. A celebrated physician of France has discovered a n«w method of curing this prevailing malady. Hore is the prescription

It consists in inhaling through the nose the omanations of ammonia contained in a smelling bottle. Ifthesenso ef smell is completely obliterated tho bottle should be kept under tho nose until the pungency of tho volatilo alkali is folt. The bottlo is then removed, but only to be reapplied after a minute tho second application, howover, should not be loug, that the patient may bear it. This easy operation being repeated seven or eight times in the course'of fivo minutes, but always very rapidly, except tho first time, the nostrils become free, the sense of smell i3 restored, and the secretion of the irrita« ting mucus is stopped. The romedy is said to bo peculiarly advantageous to singers.

REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS.—Records of tho transfer of tho following tracts ofland and city lots were placed on the Recorder's books Inst week:

Chauncey Rose to West & Woodruff, two lots in Roso's subdivision, for $900. Alexander Mopps to Wm. C. West, three lots in Macksville, for $200.

The bright light southeast of town

about ten o'clock on Friday night was occasioned by the burning of a dwelling house just being eompleted on the farm of our fellow townsman Geo. C. Duy. The fire was, from ali accounts, the result of gross carelessness on the part of some workmen employed in the building during the day.

our mention of the proposed organization of a Merchant's Police force, says the P. in that city has proved a good institU' tioc.

More than six thousand five hun

dred bushels of apples have beeh shipped from Jonesboro Station, on the Columbus & Indianapolis Central Railroad this season. Can any station in Indiana beat that. .i S! '*0* f* New Albany, Ind., claims to be one of the leading manufacturing cities in the West, and that she has more manufacturing establishments and mbre capital invested in them than any other city, of equal population, this side the Alleghany Mountains.

The pedestrian feat of walking

from Indianapolis to this city on Thanksgiving day proved a big sell—that is, the persons engaged in it made a big effort to sell somebody, but we did not hear of any* oody putting themselves out of the way to get sold.

Jfip The Early pork house 1b beirfg operated this season by George & Jenkins, of Baltimore. It is quite a number of years since the Messrs. Earlys have been out of the pork trade, and many of our farmers and pork raisers who year after, year have found a favorable market at their house will miss them this season.

TIGHT.—Harding, of the Herald tells of a wag who played off a good joke on an Indianapolis policeman. He told the bluecoated and brass-buttoned guardian that a man, awfully tight, bad just gone into a business house. The policemen wailed outside, and presently saw a gentleman, with candle-mould breeches, emerge with a package in his hand. He was most excruciatingly tight, but the policeman did not arrest him. Ho looked for the informer, but found him not.

TRAVELING BRAINS.—The New York Tribune gives a list of one hundred and sixty-three persons who will condescend, to tell the whole world what they don't know at prices ranging from $50 to'$200 an eveclng. Of these peripatetic Solons, New York furnishes 96, Massachusetts 19, Connecticut 12, Pennsylvania 9, Rhode Island 7, New Jersey, Ohio and the District of Columbia 4 each, Illinois 2, Vermont, Maine, Michigan and Maryland 1 each. The ladies of the lot are Mrs. Antoinette L. B. Brown, Mrs. L.G. Calhoun, Mrs. L. Carlton, Miss Anna E. Dickinson, Miss Lion Doty, Mrs. Francis D. Gage, "Grace Greenwood," Mrs. Elizabath Oakes Smith, Mrs. Mary C. Vaughn and Hon. Mrs. Theresa .Yelverton. "We have no doubt these one

hundred

and

sixty-three persons imagine they have more brains than all the nations of the earth. If a man could buy the whole lot at their actual worth and sell them at their own estimation he would make tho mostmagnificent speculation ever. r«corded. .'

The Masquerade of the Grand

Army boys at Dowling Hall, Thanksgiving night was a complete success in every respect. The capacious room was well filled with a gay throng of the "fairest of maidens" and "bravest of men," the beauty and strong arms of the city. The few minutes we looked in on the gay scene was not sufficient for a detailed description. The characters generally were ap« propriately dressed and well ^sustained. Wo have seldom seen such a variety. As the music struck up for the promenade, it seemed as if a babel of nations had been let loose. There were elegant and richly attired courtiers promenading, in evident contentment with wenches of tho deepest dye knights with helmet, sword and shield waltzing with peasant girls clowns whispering sentimental nonsense in the ears of queenB grave and reverend monks leading flippant flower girls through the lively measures of the dance grandmothers entertaining gay youngdavaliers and, in fact, every possible opposite and contrast. Among the dresses, however, were quite a number of the old stereotyped affairs, that appear on all occasions of tho sort, and the attempt of the person to ad the character assumed was often a lamentable and ridiculous failure.

The several committees appointed to manage and conduct the eetertainmept wore active and zealous in the discharge of their duties, the best of order prevailed, and as before remarked, the affair was a complete success, ejpecially.so financial* ly, as we learn, a net sum of about two hundred and fifty dollars will be distributed to tho needy poor of the city.

Thanksgiving Day was quite gen

erally observed in this city at least so far as outward appearances went. The banks, post office, and public offices, most of the leading business houses were closed, The tun came out bright and. cheery, in marked contrast with the other days of the week. The mechanics on out" door work, however, could not let so fine a day pass without pressing their work toward completion, and all day long- the hammer and saw beat a lively tune on the many buildings about being roofed in. Services were held ih nearly'all the churches, and were pretty well attended, which was right and proper but Thanksgiving day seems somewhat misinterpreted now»a-days. It is a sort of annual license tendered by the heads of the government to many classes of pleasure and" amusement. The clerk or the laborer, the 6tudent, or even the man of business, who finds himself released for a day from the routine of his occupation, is more likely to take advantage of bis idleness for the purpose of worldly enjoyment, than for spiritual improvement or In giving thanks to the Great Giver of all good.

We hear several of the sermons delivered on that day highly spoken of, and should be pleased to publish a liberal synopsis of each, but our limited spuce will not permit

WALTHAM.

W A E S

The true value of Machinery appliPl to Watchmaking Is not thai by it* use Watches are inade rapidly, but that they are made correctly. Very few peo le know why a Waltham Watch e4in!d be superior to any other. In the first place, nt WalthQig the Watch Is regarded as only a machine, to be constructed like any other machine on mcohanioal principles. If the watches ate good, It is bcoause the machinery 1b good. Of course there must bo no defeat in 'he prinolple or plan of the movement—no mistake In the sizes or shapes of the pieoes of wh'ch It is oomposed—nothing wanting in t»ielr properties, and no error in their positions. These points ouoe thoroujhly settlod, It tests wholly with the maohlnory, constructed with Infinite diversity of form aud function expressly for the purpose, to prodnco the finished piece*. By means of multiplying gaages and microscopes, tests and inspections for tho detection of wear in the cattieg tools, and for faults and flaws in steel or stone am mado to accompany tbe wotk in every stage from beginning to end. As a necessary reenlt, tho watch gaes together perfeot machine. Every part Is found to fit properly in its place. Every pin may ba pushed till it pinches, and every screw turned home. Instead of a sluggish and feeble action, the balance, even under the pressnre of the lightest mainspring, vibrates with a wide and fre- motion, and the beat has the clear ringing Sound alwa characteristic of the Waltham Watch.— Tbe machine is a timekeeper from the start.

This system of watchmaking is unknown in foreign countries, and Is entirely original with tho Waltham Oompany. The Company claim that by it they produce watches that cifinot be equalled Tor every quality which makes a at«h rabble, Simple in plan and caxreot la principle, the' movement is net only beautifully fiuisbed, sab** stantial, accurate and ehekp, but is noifn'rm the minutest details, not easily darn&^I,

CLIMAX.

A plain statement of facts. I inherited Scrofula, and raany.of my relations have diod of it.— In iS33 my caae was frightful. Tumors and ulcers spread until in 1842, under the advlco of my physioMUis.I jvent. to Avon' Springs. 1 received so benefit—tried everything I could. I had to rest my aim cu a cushion, and had not been able to raise it to my head for over a your. The discharge from two ulcers was nearly a pint a day. Amputation was recommended, but pronounced dangerous. I could not sleep, and my sufferings wero intolerable. A friend brought me an English physician who applied a salve with which he said he had accomplished extraordinary cares In tbe ho«pitalB in Eng'and. It commenced to relieve persisted in'its use it finally effected a per/a and entire curr. It is uow 1818. It is five yeir* since I had the appearance of a scrofulous sore, and my henltb haR been good ever since. I procured the receipt oi this wonderful article—thi* blessing to humanity—and have called it ''PAOB'S CLIMAX SALVE," and allow the public to nse It or not as they choose. This is a brief but candid statement, given more fully In my circular.
