WEEKLY EXPRESS.

Wednesday ^fdrnins, October 9,1867

The hickory nut crop will bo large

this season.

Skiff & Gay lord's Minstrels appear

at Dowling Hall to-morrow night.

jftsp- Tho total registered vote of the county is about 5,500.

|gy Thf» r-ltl ffoanty poor farm is to be sold next Saturday.

|ggr The Illinois State Fair closed at Quincy Saturday, after a very successful exhibition. 1 flag" Several deputies are energetically at work assisting the City Treasurer in the collection of taxes.

VST From our exchanges we learn the

rains

of Thursday and Friday were quite general throughout the West.

!©~We learn the receipts of the Street Railway last week were over one thousand dollars.

The Black Crook is to be given at

Dowling Hall, for a series of nights, com mencing on Friday evening next.

Tho Circuit Court convenes this

morning, and will at once commence ac tive business.

(jg-The law requiring the closing of liquor saloons on election day was generally observed yesterday.

Judge Eckles bas recently decided

the Fish law unconstitutional. This makes two decisions against Judge Thomp son's in favor of it.

The admission fees and rent of

booths .underneath, more than paid the cost of erecting the amphitheatre at tho Fair Grounds.

We afe informed tho State Fair

Grounds to be placed in charge of a competent paan who will reside on the plane and protect the propejty.

Skiff & Gaylord'sjminstrols, recog

nized as one of the very beat cork opera organizations now traveling, will be at Dowling Hall Thursday everting of this week.

The appearance of the veritable

Black Crook, at Dowling Hall, Friday evening, is causing quite a flutter among our people, and an extensive patronage will no doubt be given it during its stay.

A large pocket book, supposed to

belong to Erastus Churchj was found Saturday morning in the coal house, at* tached to Mr. Bartholomew's eating house at the depot. It had been rifled of its contents except a twenty-yve cent postal and sonj9 valuable papers.

A chap afflicted with' palpitation

of the heart, says instant relief can be found by the application of another palpitating heart to the part affected. No particular directions given—only do it gracefully and let 'em palpitate

|®f* The eating business at the Fair grounds was rather overdone—that is, in the number of Btands—und we are told many of the proprietors lost money, while others barely made onough to cloar expenses. One of tho best stands on the ground wound up business with only about one hundred dollars for the week's work.

THE NORMAL SCHOOL BUILDING.—We learn at the recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School, after a careful examination, tho brick work done by Messrs Miles & Hedden, as far as it has progressed, was accepted, being satisfactory to the Board, both as to quality of material furni»hed and work done.

We understand also that the work has been examined by some of the most competent builders in the State and by them pronounced a flrst-clasa job.

The work will progress rapidly until the season for laying brick closes.

EDITORIAL EXCURSION.---On Monday an excursion party of near two hundred editors left Chicago on a railroad trip to the Far West. They will go as far as the prosent termination of the Pacific Railroad, Providencejand the Indians permitting. Thoy aro prepared with arms and ammunition, and are fully determined to exterminate any indiscreet red man who may have the temerity to cross their path.

We were honored with a "dead head" ticket to make one of the party, but a slight fear that some gentle savage might carry the "dead head'' system too far, caused us to decline the invitation.

MARRIAGE LICENSES.—Tho following marriage licenses were issued by the County Clerk during the week ending on Saturday last John Williams and Rachel Winegarner. John H. Popham and Rebecca J. Phelps. Nelson Markle and Kate R. Stewart. Maniord MdwKibney and Minnie Adam Hugh L. Myers and Mary F. Griffith. Isaiah W. Denton and Mary A. Back. Wm Faith and Sarah Wader. Jas. T. Walker Mary L. Cole. M. H. Robinson and Susan A. Todd. Henry L. Donham and Rachel T. Hall. Jas G. Hamilton and Rebecca A. Harmon. A. J. Akers and Mary E. Forbes. Henry Rensinbrink and Doretha Rasselburgh. Henrv Schultz and Catharine Weber.

SUPPOSSI MURDER.—Thursday ni as Conductor Sbartle's night express tXAin came in from the east, it ran over the body of:a man, mutilating it iti a moat horrible manner. The body was immediately picked up and found to bo that of C. R. McKinney, a resident of Shelburne, twenty miles south of the city. When taken up the body was quite cold, and there can be no doubVthe man was mar dored, robbed, and the body placed on on the track to cover up the hellish work. McKinney had about seven hundred dol. lars witfe -b4m*^4arin5' the day, and" this money was gone. The coroner a jury entirely exhonerated the engineer from all blame.

The recent rains will allow our

farmer to sow their wheat this week.

Dr. David Sebring, of Noble

county, baa just been tried at Goshen, on a charge of poisoning his wife. He was acquitted.

Excursion trains are running into

Indianapolis, from various portions of the State, to let the people see the Black Crook.

The Brazil Miner says that kidney

iron ore of a superior quality, was found by Dr. Knight last week near Brazi]_ The specimens shown will yield sixty cent, of irons. Sl Bu

Ameng other kind remembra.

Mrs. F. Steverson favors us with sam of her fruit pickles, which attracte^f.Qgk much attention at the Fair last week. .We

It is sincerely to be hoped thav

pickpockets, thieves and cut-throats tendant on tho State Fair, have depa. with it. They will doubtless traqj \j| their operations to the Missouri Fair, which opens at St. Louis, to-day

THE OLD 24TH BAND.—The atteoda: at the State Fair of the famous bnnd the veteran 24th regiment was a gr gratification to the many thousands listened to their magnificent playing ing the week. The band is composed the following gentlemen, who stand uperlor tho head of their profession: A. G. Ow. leader G. D. Kirkman, F. M. Owen, A. W. Otven, H. C. Owen, James Sherwood J. H. Busick, A. Murray, W. T. Stevens and A. W. Murray.

LARGE SWEET POTATOES.—By favor of the Heinl Brothers we have a basket of magnificent sweet potatoes, raised by Ten brook, Pierce & Co., South Pass, Illinois, and which took the premium at the State Fair. They are of the varieties known as the "Nansemond," "Brazillian," and "Bermuda." Thoy are of monstrous size, one weighing four pounds.

t&" Five men in jail boarding out city fines, were taken out yesterday morning and placed on the chain gang at work on the streets. During the day two of them escaped. Ono of the men that escaped was in jail for stealing a coat, and got out by answering to the name of Patrick Carroll, who was in on a city fine. Patrick acknowledges that it was a made up plan for the coat-thief man to escape. He will oubtless be astonished to find that in aiding a prisoner to escape, he is a good subject for the grand jury.

MAYOR'S COURT.—John McCarty got his carcass outside too much pizen, and seven dollars in postals outside his pocketbook.

John Kennedy, a suspicious looking individual, was arrested under the vagrant ordinance, and in default of the payment of $13 50 fine and costs, was committed to jail.--

Charles Purcell, for running a gaming device, known as the Patent Tobacco Box, was assessed a bill of $32 50.— Couldn't pay and went to Kizor's.

YOM KIPUR.—On last evening commenced the day of atonement, or as it is called in the Hebrew, Tom Kipur, which will conntinue until the stars appear this evening. This is a day that is more strictly observed than any other in the Jewish calendar.

Among the Jews it is the belief that on New Year's Day, or September 30, the names of those who are to suffer the providences of the Almighty—such as sickness, death, or loss of friends or property—are written down in the rocord of God. Up to tho 10th day atonement may be made if the people humble themselves before Jehovah, otherwise the record is sealed and the judgement is sure.

E. & C. RAILROAD.—Theannual report of John Ingle, Jr., President of the Ev» ansville and Crawfordsville Railroad furnishes the following interesting details of the operations of the road during the past year:

THE ELECTION.—The apathy, or neglect of duty on tho part of the Union men, has no doubt allowed the election to go in favor of the Democracy. Scarcely two-thirds of the voters of Harrison township went to the polls, and of coarse tho great majority of those who stayed away were Republicans. The Democrats were out in force, and by active work and concerted action polled their full strength. We have no returns from the outside townships. The following is the result in the ty-i imt-'iMii nfffa in this town-
