A VALUABLE BOOK.—We are indebted to the publishers—Howe's Subscription Book Concern, 111 Main street, Cincinnati—for a copy of a rare and valuable work. It is entitled "A History of the Western States and Territories, from the Alleghanies to tho Pacific, and from the Lakes to tho Gulf." It gives their history from the date of their settlement, with the most interesting incidents of pioneer life, military events and biographical sketches. It also gives full geographical descriptions of the different States, Territories and towns, and is illustrated by two hundred and forty appropriate engravings. Its authors are John W. Barber and Henry Howe, both of whom are well-known analists in this species of literature. There is in this volumo of over seven hundred pages an immense .amount of interesting and important information which cannot be found elsewhere wit bout ransacking whole libraries for it. To the historical student, it is especially valuable, and, in our judgment, from its geographical and historical information, would make an admirable text book. The biographical sketches and pioneer inci dents are alone worth the price of the vol unit. It is handsomely printed and ele gantly bound, and is well worthy of place in every Western library. Agents are referred to the advertisement of this and other works in the column of *'Want».

QUACKENBOS'S ARITHMETICS. -Quack enbo's new Arithmetics claim to be the best in the field, and we think not without reason. Why? Because their rules and analyses are admirably condensed. Because in number and variety of examples they are uequalled. Because in Interest and all other business operations (on which they are particularly full) they t?ach the method actually used by business men. Becausa, being written since the war, they are up to the times (which none of the old text-books are)—give present prices, teach that there is a difference between gold and currency, describe Government Securities, and show how to find the comparative results of investments in them. New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City, &c., have adopted them for their Common Schools, and we think their merits have only to be known to introduce them generally. We see the Publishers (D. APPLKTON & Co., of New York) are advertising for local agents for these Arithmetics in every county, sm dwlt.
