AS A

HOME AST PLACE

OP BUSINESS —ITS IUV&KAL WATERS— ITS paoG^Ess—IROS MAUTTITACTUKIES DOTTSUS BAIL BOAS TBACK FOB COAL DEPOSITS.—Before I became one of your citizens or ever had visited Terre Haute, of no city in the State did I know so lit* tie of aa of this city. This you will find to be true of the best population who are. changing their homes from the older States to the new ones. They hear but little and know bat little of our city.— Here are the homes of some of the most distinguished public men of the State.— Here is one of the most beautiial cities en the continent. Among capitalists in New Tork and merchants, there are no business men' whose credit stand higher thuft the credi( of our capitalists and merchants. Here do we find social, educational and church privileges of the very highest order privileges such as ought to arrest many who-go to the far west, and would attract hither many of those who seekother homes, were the advantages of our city known abroad. Perhaps the reason why these inviting qualities of our city is so little known, is very much the same in principle as that which applies to individuals. Men who possess the highest order of talents and attainments and character are but little trumpeted abroad, while those who possess but little are oompelled to publish what they bave.

Aa one of your citizens, I have felt that pride in recent progress, which I trust is common to all good citizens. Within a few weeks has been developed water from the Rose Artesian Well of such valuable medicinal properties, as must invite here (so seon as it is placed in a condition to attract visitors,) persons for a tempora ry and permanent residence among us.— Within a few days also, has the street railway been, put into operation, and to the praise of those who control it be it said, that its career has been inaugurated by a strict observance of the sanctity of the Sabbath. To-day is to be laid the corner stone of tho State Normal Scuool in our midst. These things aro among the elements of our progress, and our people ought to learn to appreciate them, and to take pride in maintaining tbe high character of the town in the aspects to which I have alluded, and pride in advancing to a still higher standard all that

make3

a city home, attractive, to plain

substantial, honofable, cultivated and righteous people, But what has dictate£t1)is letter, is the fact that among the manufacturwig interests of the oldter Eastern St-ttes, the reudioese of our home-capitalists-to.cn^an^e by their monied help the Iocatitu o!' tbeso interests bore, is not kDOwn it thoi.b) be. Let us illustrat-. this in tbe cat'- "t tbe Iron interest The great' the iron manufactured ia tbo Eusc anc through which the priacoly fortune ot BO many have been accumulated, i* in the West.

In proximity with Torre Haute, 16 an inexhaustible deposit of coal which can bo used in its raw state for tbe purposo of smelting iron ores. These deposits are rare in the country. Among tbe immense deposits of coal in Pennsylvania there has been discovered but fe# deposits suitable to this purpose. Among c^il deposits of Missouri and Illinois to our knowledge uocoal has yet been discovered combining these properties, necessary for reducing iron ores to the axo'talic slato, without tho expense of first eok:: Lho coal. This is why iron maiuifsotuiMrr are looking to this region—Missouri furnishes the ores, we the coal. Tbe iron can be manufactured here iu tbe coal region, at as little cost as iu tho Etiss m.d the cost ol transportation of iron from li« East ^o the main market, saved.

There are now in process of erection at Brazil several smelting furnaces and th«j.-c well nigh completed, representing capital of tcvcral hundred thousand doLars. We are glad that our neighboring town has received such an impetus and such accessions to its citizens as aro that class ui men known as iron men. The successful iron master, is ordinarily a man of tho highest order of scientific attainments.

We are now erecting a nail factory here. Our sands,. Ac. will invite glaes factories here. Why should not guarantees immediately be given to manufacturers and eapi'alitU of the East that a double track shall be laid by the Terre Haute A Indianapolis railroad from the coal deposits to this city. Thus so much distance of transportation of ores from the West will be saved, and tho coal placed thus at tbe orucibltt of the smelting furnaces

Our people should be stirred up to their interest, in inviting these manufacturing interests here. The manufacturers of the East are ready for such enuouragomeiUs. Let our property holders and peopio see that these encouragements, which they ars both able and toilting to give, are offered to them. These suggestions aro made by one who has no interest in coal nor oret, but by one who wishes to see our city so developed as will make it more worthy of the pride of its good citizens, than at present. A CiTizsy.
