Seward, it Is said, has leaned strongly toward Stanton in alibis troubles with the President, and especially in this last one.

Ian Depredations.

A new phase of hostility ou the part of the Indians has been recently developed. On Wednesday last the westward bound train on the Union Pacific Road was attacked by a large force of Indians, six miles west of Plum Creek. Thero were obstructions placed on the track in tho approved style of such rascalities, the train was thrown off and the engineor, fireman and brakemen killed. The wholo thing was done in the usual way in which such things are done in civilized countries The train was roboed. The only addition to tho depredation as commonly practiced elsowhoro was that some scalping was thrown in. It looks very much as if white men were at the bottom of this thing and furnished tho plan and put it in exo. ution taking along the Indians just to give their performanco a little variety. Various indications lead us to the belief that white men are mixed up in all tho Indian depredations that are* now thickening upon us. Wo aro loth to believe that tho Railway Companies or operatives are in these deprodntions or instigate them for any ulterior purposes. There aro, however, many mysterious mutters connected with tuom all, and which look as if sumo of our own Countrymen aro answerable for theui.— There is I vag:.bjndish class of whites banging around the Indian frontier, who have nothing to lose and nothing to g-in by war with the Indians Tlioro is a vast horde of contractors and soouts and sub-agents and refugees from justice, and adventurers of all kinds that are interested in seeing the western territories filled with United States soldiers. An Indian war would build up the western territories, and many unprincipled people would like to see it inaugurated and continued for years, no matter at what expeuso to tho nation or on what pretext it could be started. Wo suspect all theso classes are instigators of tho present In. dian depredation, and will bo discovered to be so wbon tho truth is reached. Tte Indians ought to be at onoe transferred from tho Interior Department and turned over to the War office, and the wholo system of Indian Superintendents, As onts, Traders, &o., straightway abolished, and no persons except soldiers and jflieor3 be permitted to hold intercourse with them. We must rosort to this or else make preparation far a war of extermination. So long as bad wnito men aro permitted to teach Indian how to rob mail coaches, throw railway trains from tbo track, waylay emigrants, cat telograph wires and commit similar rascalities so long they will occur, The arms and ammunition and brains and everything neeoful to commit such atrocities aro deliberately permitted, by tho government, to bo furnished by white men to tho savage scoundrels The latter are really tho tools of the former. It is time a change should bo made in our relations to tho Indians. It must occur or a protracted war is on our hands.

Kentucky Politics.

The stubborn and reckless character of the Kentucky rebels was fully demonstrated in the recent elccuon, Every moans was resorted to to defame and decry tho General Government and to display to world tbo fact that tho rankest sort of treason and rebellion still lived among tho gentlemen of the "lost causa" in Kentucky. It is now apparent that it would bavo been bettor for that State to liavo ewung off squarely into the rebolliou in tho outset and taken its share of punish, ment with tho States in opon rebellion.— The idea that Kentucky is a tort of political reservation, wilhin tho General Government, is getting possession of its Keb-el-Democrar and may yet load tbern grief. The Kentucky politicians, of tho Rebel stripe, are anxious to convince the country that tbey have nothing in common with the other States of the Union and are wholly independent of tho General Government. Tkey givo out to tbe world, in plain talk their resolvo that

Rebels may journey and where they find rest. The condition of thing3 in this State is porhaps worso than in any of thoso which woro lately in armed rebellion. Tho dreadful lesson of tho war which has just closed does not appear to havo been learned by Kentuckians, nor was the kind and forbearing conduct of the Federal Government towards them, during the war, appreciated by them. The celebrated "armed neutrality" doctrine with which the politicians of that State started out at the commencement of the Rebellion has wrought out its legitimate work and with the help of President JOHNSON'S "my policy" has produced tho state of things which now exists in Kentucky. Fortunately tho conduct of this State has no influence for harm. Tho balance of the Union has very little care or regard for what transpires within this State and would not be much astonished at any time to find it attempting a small rebellion on its own hook. The old fame and renown ut Kentucky has passod away. The stalwart eloquent and bravo patriots of other uays are gone and the Kentucky of to-day is but a more ghost of what it was a quarter of a century sinee.

Young JOE Smith is at the head of tho wuicontonts, and basse:, up as tho truo M^rmou prophet and rightful succcssor of his father. Tne youthful prophet is willing, it is claimed, to aban* don tbo "leading plank in BRIGHAM YOUNG'S platform, and dispense with poligamy, and this is making him hosts of fnonds among tho poorer classes of Mormons. BKIOHAM is dofi&nt, tyranical and abusive about tho matter. Hu is unwilling to seo his scepter depart from him, and proposes to make a strong fight over it. In the mormtimc many of tho taints aio ^escaping from Utah, and general dissatisfaction is spreading among those that remain. It will bo a great thing for our Government if there can be a general quarrul umong the polygamists and tho whole Mormon difficulty got rid of by internal dissensions. It cannot be long beforo tho Government wiu be compelled to interfere in Utah matters, put down polygamy with tho sword and roscue tbo deluded inhabitants of that territory from tho merciless persecutions and oxactions of Brigham and his host of apostles, bishops and elders. This sort of interference cannot bo delayed long unless the internal quarrels of tho Saints shall accomplish the same end more speedily.— In this view tho ilormon quarrel becomes a matter of national interost and if it waxes warm and breaks up tho nest of unholy Saints or scoundrels who have squatted in Utah it will provo a national blessiug. The "twin relic of barbarism" is apparently on tho decline and it is to be hoped that Jos SMITH, Jr, may live to break down the sytem which was set up by his father and thus accomplish somo good in his generation.

Tbe Union Pacific Railroad. A few weeks since we noticed tbe open ing of tbe Union Pacific Railroa^ io JuIeiR burg, 377 miles westofOmaba, and some-, time this week we expect ^to report completion to Crow Creek, -a point 481miles further west, making a total of 425 miles. Fifty miles of track In addition are graded roady for the iron, and there is no doubt of the completion of the ro&d to tho base of tho Rocky Mountains early in the Pall. The Company are confident that the whole line to tbe Pacific will be open for business in 1870. The Indians have annoyed tbe surveying parties and tie-cutters, who are many hundred mllos in advance ol tho work but they have a wboloswme fear of the population that a railroad caries with it, and all the trains rim without interruption.

The business of tbo Company has been most flattering. Tho earnings for the quarter ending August 1st. woro about $700 000 but ns tbo report for the last week in July has not been received, the exact fractiou cannot bo given. These earnings accrued from operating an aver age of not more than 350 miles of road, and a'ter deducting operating expenses, tbe balance is far in excess of the interest obligations of tbe Company" oh the amount of bonds they can is^Uo 'oll that distance. It should be remembered that this result is from a way business afoue, through a new country, and is not to be compared with the vast through business that must follow the opening of tho whole lino to tho Pnc.flc. The success of tho enterprise ms to bo thoroughly as.-ured, and we can f.ea no ro*6on why the First Mortgage Bonds aro nat ontiiled to rank among the best securities. TheViaily sales are now so lorpc, that the Company already entertain tho idoa of advancing tha price.
