The new secret political organization is based on dogmas that undermine the federal constitution, and are in direct conflict with the whole past policy of the government. It aims to take the power out of the hands of the people, and to plaoe it in the lodges of a Briarian association, the revelations that have been made respecting the machinery of whioh must inspire intense disgust. It overthrows the elective franchise of the individual, and substitutes in its stead the despotic mandate of an invisible couusel. It renews in a more odious form the cruel doctrines of the alien, aot, with the addition of the feature abridging religious freedom, which even the reckless audacity of the old federal party would have shrunk aghast at.
With such a parly in our midst, and that iri numbers too large to excite the oontempt they would seem to merit appealing to the lowest prejudices of the vulgar, and the intolerant spirit of the narrow-minded and the bigoted under the leadership of ambitious demagogues, restless for the spoils of office and craving a complete demolition of the existing order of things openly emblazoning on their banners principles, whioh. If successful, would sap the govirnment and destroy social order, the gave mission with which the democratic party, as the conservatives oftho land, are charged, is to put down this organization, or st least to attempt it. To shrink from the responsibility of discharging this duty is to ignore the history of the party and to sacrifice its prinsiples on the altar of an extremely, problematical expediency. They must meet the issue— meet it boldly and squarely. And it cannot be done to soon. "KCCL.VR.. ,m To

Salem Ind:
DEAR SIR:—Vour
oommunication was
duly received ami content* considered. A press of business has prevented a« from answering it sooner.
I have never be?n ashamed to boldly avow my political opinions, when such an avowal was called for by my fellaw-ciiizens. or was necessary for the advancement of that poUtical^arty to which I belong. Yet I rarely, if ever, notice the malicious insinuations of the opposition newspapers, for 1 know their ungenerous attacks upou my public and private life will be received with many grains of allowance by an impartial public. I deem it due to myself, and you to say. that from the first agitation in Congress of the Nebraska Kansas question, up to. the present hour, I have had but one npiuion in regard to the
great issue
presented to the
American people by that qu^stimu and that opinion has been in favor of the policy of non intervention by Congress in «he domes tic affairs of the States and Territories, and o! allowing the people therein to choose such forms of government (not inconsistent with ihe Constitution of the United States,) a* to them may be desirable^ Neither have I
principle
had
mv opinions under a bustiel, as some hive intimated, That the
of popular sovereignly,
as shadowed forth by the ISehrsskn-Kansas act, is the true principle of republicanism. 1 have never for a moment doubted and the only question for Indiana to consider, in relation thereto, is whether shn will continue to occupy her present proud position of nationality, or one of sedtionallsm. Itis to be hopetl that she will maintain ihc dignity of the former, for it is believed that
n» section
al party can exist mlh ony hope of success, as long as the principles of JrfersQn art sustained.
The prophetic eye of Jefferson lookeJ forward to the time when this momentous question would convulse this confederacy, and endanger the union of the Stales. Hence, in his letter to
Mr.
Holmes, under date of
April 22J. 1820, concerning the Missouri Compromise, he says: "Bat
this momentous
question, like a Jire bell in the night, awakened and filed me with terror. 1 consideredit at once as the knell of the Union. It is hushed, indeed for a moment. But this is a reprieve only—not a final sentence.
A
GEOGRAPHICAL LINE, coinciding with a marked principle. moral and political, once conceived and held up to the angry passions of men, will never be obliterated and every new irritation will mark it deeper and deep er."
In view of those facts, th-re patriotic son of Indiana, who would wish to see this
••momentous question"
ogain opened up to
agitation! Indiana, as a ccntrul State, has always mantained a Mgh conservative position, especially on that r.tcifing question which so alarmed (he patriotic heart of.Vfr. Jefferson, And what Indiana is not proud of that ex alted position of his beloved State? She is. indeed, convinced that she has wisely selected her own domestic policy. She is siiisfied with the degree of prosperity which, under that free policy, she has attained. While we, as a State, enj the privilege of making our owu l«w4?in our own wrfy. 1 il would be unjust in the ex'rerae to arro-1 gate to oursalvea a course of poliay that we would not freely accord to our friends and relatives in Nebraska and K«nss». T»»*i centralization of
pjwer ami influence,
In conclusion, allow me to say a wird or two in relation to the nominees of the Democratic Convention of th* 24th of may last. The Democracy of Indiana were peculiarly fortunate in selecting its stand
ard-bearers. They are men of marked a*j -f£jt

The Geo. has politely favored us with a prompt reply as follows
Office of the Nal. Temperance Organ,
CtNctSjsATi, August 9, 1864. DEAR SJ&:—Your note of the 4ih, endosing your proposition to meet me at the times-and places therein named, in the discussion of the subject of prohibition has this moment been laid upon my table. My public engagements are of such a character (every day being appropriated until the October election) that I could
#not,
if 1
would, accept your challenge. Truly yours, &c„ S. F. C*R\
5
We regret that the General's engagements are such as to deprive us of the opportunity of a friendly discussion in Indiana and, without wishing to be importunate, we would suggest that if he will inform us where he is to address some meeting immediately after the c5os^{ our appointments, we should be willing to be at some inconvenience to be present to hear a review of our arguments, provided we should bo allowed #n equal division of the time to set ourself »g}lt
As we believe that public discussions are veil calculated to elicit and dissemin&te correct principle*, we will further suggest, that if the lixeoutive Committee of the State Prohibition Society concur with us in this view, and will appoint some gentleman to discuss the question, under the same rpgulations as did the Ex. Com. of the Ohio State Society, last fall, we shall be happy to divide the time with him at a public meeting for the purpose, to be held at Indianap oliSrorthe vicinity,"on Tuesday, Sept. 19. The reason that we call upon the Executive Committee is, that we have heretofore discussed the question with several individuals who have subsequently been disowned as competent representatives of the Maine Law party, and we have therefore concluded to enter in no discussion hereafter, except with persons appointed and endorsed for the put-pose by some State Society as was Doct. Jewett by the Stale Society of Ohio. If our suggestion* meets the view# of the Committee, (to whom we shall aeud a letter with this notice, enclosed, we hope that limsly arrangements may be made for a candid and friendly discussion, a.i we have no interest in tho advocacy of any sentiment on the subject that will not stand the test qf fair argument.
