There are men of mark among the mem-" bers of the present Assembly, and, as a body they have a fine and dignified appearance. It would be a blessed day for this Htate and nation if a portion of the sense and honesty of this body could be imparted to the legislature, State and national, for there never were men who needed more of it to bring them up to a standard of respectability. The tnosl prominent men in the Assembly are Hodge, cfPricetoQ, whose profound scholarship adorns one of the Professorship* in the renowned school of Theology. l)r Breckinridge, of Kentucky, who, we believe, is a son of Jefferson's attorney General Breckinridge, and a member of a distinguished family, i« a remarkable man, conspicuous by his bearing and manner, and for liis high position in his sect.

Under the snows of almost sixty winters there burns the fire of a man of half that age, and his tall spare-form has lr it the vigor of one unbroken by age, or the laborious services of an active industrious life. He is a forcible speaker, and a match for about fli'ty Congressmen, as Congressmen now average, oo any question whatever. I)r. MuMastrrs in another remarkable loooking man, and is. we believe a brother of that Mc Masters who edits the Freeman's lournal in New York He Is tall ar.d dignified in his appearance, •ltd i« said to be able, both as a theologian and debater. The Moderator, Dr. Boar 1* man is from Philadelphia, and his face would attract attention as indicating first-rate abii ity. He presides with great credit to himself over the deliberation# of the Ainem'ily hig gray hairs, and face full of benevolence, i* Dr. Kdgar of Tennessee, and the friend and minister of General Jackson, and one ot the most distinguished olergymen of the South Dr. McGill ia a spare man, evidently suffering from ill-health, but hasth head and face of one who would prove an unprofitable antagonist in a debate, and we ar« told that he holds a position in tne front rak of American Divines. Dr Spring of New York, is well known to the people of thic State, and has published a series ol works which entitles him to be ranked a mong the dia inguised writers of the day The reverend gentleman has a fine face, full of all thtf kindly qualities of humanitv. and ia sincerely respected by the whole body of the Preabyteritna, and bis works admired by the Christian world.

Not the least among the notables of thU body ia a short man, whin a body physically weak, but a mind keen, sharp and penetrating—the embodiment ol humor, and the dsvoted champion of the temperance cause. For years we have heard of him as an effective and adrou lecturer, whose appearance upon the stage was the signal tor silence, and the settling down of the audience into that listining attitude which awaits a favorite speaker. That is Rev. Thomas Hunt, the famoua temperance lecturer, a good man one who has fought gallantly against the e» trile of intemperance. We hardly intend to notice the Assembly at such length, and cannot do justice to the gentlemen whom we hare preeumed to mention, to say nothing of Dr*. Stuart Robbtnaon, Tallmadge, Leyburn, the writable Chancellor Johns of Del iware, and other gentlemen, who we shall have occasion to notice hereafter.

We are glad that the Assembly have mat here, and hope that they will be fawaMy Impressed with our city. Many of them have heard the fame thereof, bat never have witnessed the actual beauty and the pow. •rful business energy wh*eh distinguished feer among the Northern cities. We have been favored with Convention* of at) kinds in years peat, white and black, and a vagrant Legislature came si most within our borders leet rear but we would much prefer a good word front such men as are now here tn Convention assembled, than the united praise of all white and Week CeneentwrnaT adding there to the commeda*ion of all the Legislatures that have assembled within five years past in thia State.

Riots ia Brook If*. New Yosk, June II.

There was street preaching agsin to-day at Brookln, several riots occurred. The "Angel Gabriel" held forth on the corner of Herret and Atlantic streets. All was quiet until the close, when a disturbance commenced. Two or three Irishmen were arrestal by the police. A rescue was attertiptdL during wich the Irish were badly beaten lfy,ihe officers.

Later in the afternoon another disturbance aroae at the coruer of llioka and Aiiantio streets. Severs! shots were fired it is supposed by the police, It is reported that two or three were killed.

A strong force of extra police are out. and the 14th regiment is under arms at the City Hall in this city. No more disturbancea as yet. Major Westervelt has made ample arrangements to quell any riot, eitra policemen having been appointed and a regiment of the National Guards are held in readiness with six rounds of ball cartridges. grots Um Buffalo CoeuBS ratal A.lrartlaer. But the faciatios are now quiet, or will be aa anon as the excitement of the Boston mob blows over. Their occupation's gone, and they must lie dormant, till their appetites, whetted by hunger, seek again to (east oo the vitals of the Union. The good under»tsnding between the North and South has, for a time, been interrupted—enmitiea have sprung up—bitter feelings been eogen dered but with the restoration of quiet will be resumed the usual flow of good feeling and the interchange of kindly offices. Du ring the summer, a flood of Southerner*, in pursuit of pleasure or business, will go northward and find their brethren ready to welcome them with cordial good will. We hail with pleasure the retujn of peace, and the reatoralion of order.—St. Louis Even ing News.
