The New York Dribmne publishes a c*py of a law which the editor of that paper wants enacted in all the free Stales. The latter day 8»ioi» of t'tab-. the irgitimate disciples of the late Jbc Smith of S»B* TOO notoriety, no longer deny that the practice of Polygamy is licensed among them, although when first charged against them, they denied it bitterly. They now admit the charge and say that they have as good is right to a plurality of wives as bad the Patriarch* ol old. It appears that the number of wives which they have is graduated by the rank or position th*y hold in the church. The Governor of ibeTerritory Brigham Young, who is the successor of the immortal "Joe" the founder and propagator of this fanatical sect, haa no less tbao forty. Bigdon who it is alleged atole and printed the manuscript which was passed ofTby Smith as the "Book of Mormons" translated from golden plates, and is now the High Priest, has thirty six, and other dignitaries, have a proportionate number.

One of the wives of Pratt, a prominent man among the mormons, has recently written a letter to her sister in New Hampshire, in which shevery ingeniously defends the practice of polygamy. She •ays her husband baa seven other wives, and thst the eight wives have togeth* er twenty-five children. Her husband «he says, i« "good and virtuous," his wives and children are all much attach* ed to him, and lie treats them with the greatest kindness and alleclion. lie is a teacher of Mormon morals and religion, and is at present a member of ihe legislative council of the Territory. Mrs. Prstt expresses the hop* that ihe laws of the Stale on this «ide of the continent may aoon be so amended and public opinion so changed, as to permit Utah gentlemen to travel over the country with their wives and children, and enjoy as much consideration as they do at home. A great country this, and a decidedly faal age! We shouldn't be at all sur prised if somewhere in the far West, a sect of strong minded women would spring up, which would allo-v to eocb of its members as many husbands as she oould support!— With many it would be a popular sect, and we are only astonished that it has not been established long since. It will oertainly be ihe nexl thing upon the tapis.

#*TThe two editors of the Louisville Courier, having managed to get out of their quarrel with the Journal, are now quarrel ing with each other over their own proper signatures. Gallagher wrote a salty oard repudiating something Hsldeman had said about the editor of the Journal, and now Haldeman is out in "another card," in which he said he read Gallagher's oard with "surprise and mdignation." The end of this complicated difficulty is that Gallagher has withdrawn from tbe editorship of the Courier, it being utterly impossible for two such chivatrio spirits as he and Haldeman to "drive the quill," over the same paper. After disposing of a number of unimpor lant resolutions, the House went into com mitiee of the whole, and took up the Pacifio Railroad bill. Mr. Gerrett Smith of New York, having the fKor, addressed the Com mittee at length in opposition to the bill.— He was listened to, as he always is listened to by the House, with great attention and respect, and more than one son of ihe Old Dominion nodded his head in approval of the sentiments of the mild and benevolent enthusiastic Gerrit. Mr. Smith is generally allowed to be the most attractive speaker in the House. As you look upon his tall commanding form—his broad expansive forehead—his open honest oounteoance. as you watch his soft winning smile, and see his soft eye kindle whb emotion, but only emotion of the purer and better kind. As you listen to the full round tones of a matchless voice swelling, and swelling with the tide of feeliug from an overflowing heart you feel assured that the man before you can have no lot or part with aucb miscreants at Sumner, Giddtngs, Phillips and Parker. He may be the unwavering opponent of slavery but you know that he belongs not to tbe murdering abolition mob of Boston. While the Sumners, Giddingses, end Sewards oi Congress, are shunned by their fellow members, aa being utterly unworthy of personal association, Gerrit Smith enjoy* tbe respect and ereo good will of all.
