(Mi county, in which one man was killed,
and another mortally wounded. The Court
of Common Pleas being in session a court
of inquiry was held before Judge Cowgill on
last Friday, at which the following facts
were brought out. It appears that there
wss a log-rolling at a Mr. Dobson's at whick
several neighbors were present. Mr. Hiram
Furney who was a road aupervisor. left
sometime before night, with ihe intention ot
warning a Mr. Rice, and othors he had not
seen, to work on the roads* Nothing fur
ther was beard from him until the next
morning, when an Irishman came to the
house ol Mr. Dobaoti. and infoimed him
that Mr. Furney was at Mr. Rice's nearly
beat to death, the deed being done the night
before, and it was impossible for him to
communicate Ihe news aooner. as Rice sat
up all night with him. watching whether
Furrtey would die or not, and a* he (Rice}j
fell ealeep about daylight, he took advant-j
age ol the opportunity to give the informa
tion. Rice would not permit Ihe Irishman
to leave, and threatened if he aaid anything
to kill him. Several of the neighbors sooh
gathered in, and found Mr frurney in a
helpless condition, horribly bruised, and to-
telly insensible. It wa» thought he could
not possibly live long About thisi time
Rice had caught hie horse and was in the
act of having, with Ins rifle on his shoulder,
when Mr Joshua Furney. a broiher of the
injured man, in company with hie father,
was seen coming up ihe road, the young
man having also a gun on bis shoulder As
soon as i*»oy were aeon approachiug by
Rice he dropped the reins of his bridle, and
advanced towards them with hia gun in a
shooting position. When within a fewyards
of each other both guns were fired, it is not
known, which first. Rice being killed on the
spot, the ball entering hia breast, while the
ball of hie gun trussed Furney but hit an
