Come to the bower, gentle maid, Where the Dowers repoee In tho dear, And theeweetest and faireet that bluah lu the ahade,

Shall be wove ia a garland for you.

The jessamine and damask rosea, The cowalips and tulip* *0 blue, And the crocus, it'* rich buds discloses

To compose this garland for you.

Tho true eye of friendship has found them, Of friendship both constant and true, And the true hand of friendship haa bound them,

Has bound them, fair EMMA, for you.

So here is your chapSet of sweet scented flowers, Brighter nor fairer on Murg* ne'er grow, 'Twere aelocted from Flora'* bright bower*,

And wove In this garland for yon.

Leasing say*: "The most agreeable of all companion* is a simple, frank mail, without any high pretention* to an oppressive greatueo*—one who ives, and understands the n*e of it: obliging alike at all hours above all a golden tamper, and steadia*t as an anchor. For such a one we would gladly, exchange the greatest genius, the most brilliant with the proroundost thinker."

We learn that a practical and successful effort In favor of the Maine Law, was made In the town of Washington, Taxewell county. Some forty or fifty young men repaired to the premisos of a dealer in the ardent, and deatroyed about thirty barrels of liquor, giving him to understand that, if hedi.l not, for the future, choose a more honorable calling, that they, as cold water men, would give him the benefit of a bath in the cceek.

The immediate cause of this outbreak was that the dead body of a man named David Kelso, waa found on the premise* of the liquor dealer a few days since.—Ptaria (tU.) Republican.

TEMPERANCE—We clip ihe following paragraph from the Deiroit Free Ptest. It applies lo the present slate of affairs in Indiana. We endorse the sentiment:

Our advice lo iho Democracy of the Stale is to make no issue on the temperance question, one way or the other, in any locality.—It is a moral question and must be treated by the legislature as such. They who would drag it into the political arena, do so not to promote temperance, but to subserve party purposes. They are wolves in sheep's clothing, who would steal the livery of heaven to serve the devil in.

MR. Corona's Atx0MPi.1SHKENTS.--In speaking of these the New York Mirror says: He is tho best shot we have in our pistol galleries, his carte and tierce at his finger ends, understands the manly art" quite as well as any private gentleman that we know of, and has withal the courage to stand square up to ihe rack, whether in the right or in the wrong.

To the proof. Dr. ilasack the celebrated surgeon, challenged Mr. Cutting, who laced the music so readily, offering to meet him at any lime or place, and with any weapon, that the Doctor thought better of it, and let him pass. Com. De Kay, when a client of his, once sent him an invitation to meet him with whatever weapon he might select. Mr: C. chose nature.s own, and, in his office, after directing the clerk's to keep the room clear, gave the Commodore a pummeling that he long remembered.

AcctuEjnr AT THE ANTI NEBASKA CONVENTION IN CoumBtfS.—As the meeting adjourned about noon, the stairs leading to the street became much crowded and gave way. precipitating a large number of persons info tha cellar beneath. We learned that one gentleman had his arm broken, and Dr. Matthews, oi this city, it is feared, is seriously injured. We hopa this is not the case. We saw several with Woody noses, black eyes, and slight contusions, we are not disposed to attribute this accident to any thing but insecure fastenings, weak timber, or over crowding, though we firmly believe that if it had occured at ft melting of the friends of the Nebrtska bill it would have been heralded forth as a judgement and as a warning of Providence to the sinners who advocate that measure. Senator Sutton, ot Huron county, had his arm bruken.-Colum-bus Statesman. March ft

ITT To all those who are the advocates of ministerial stump oratory, we beg leave to commend the following which we take from the Richmond Christian Advocatev «:Thls is a sad affair, not for tha coootry, but for Christianity, so shamefully outraged in 'the bouse of its frieads.' Professionally, we cannot be supposed to fool Indifferently towards the ministerial character. When in their place, engaged in their appropriate work, no clsss of men in tho country is more highly esteemed than ministers of the Goapel. But when they turn aside from their holy employments, and descend into the arena of party political atrifo, the defile their mission, and lay their honor in the dust. Instead of 'washing their hands in innocency' they soil them with worldly filth, and stain them with crime against their country's peace. They richly merit the rebakes administered by gentlemen of the Senate, and must blame themselves If, hereafter, they find themselves shunned as disturber* of the public peace, and the religion they profess aad leach suspected of having too much to do with the world that now l«, and too little with that which Is to come. *My kingdom is not of this world,' said Christ «lf it were, then would my aarvants fight.' We write more in sorrow than In anger when we express the belief that this furious conglomeration of every shade of religious opinion and ecclesiastic sal policy against the Nebraska bill haa more of earth than heaven, of time than eternity, In its element* and objects, and has a higher veneration Cor men's judgments than for God's, notwithstanding their seeming Impression that his judgments are subject to the impertenlnt and vindictive movements ef their ova They can consort, unanimously agree, and act with a massive oneneas ia this case, but if the question concerned the sending of a missionary to convert the Chinese, they could not be wooed Into the same building together, or brought within bow-shot of each other, without vexatious disputing*, and sectarian wrangiings. We uOer this opinion with profound humiliation, but with as profound a conviction of its truth and justice. It is painful to witness such a deaecrction of ministerial character, lo watch the movements of men, of whom better things might be expected, engaged In a crusade agala*t the rights of the Sooth, aod trailing their priestly garments la the dust lo accomplish objects not mentioned ia their commission, aad never dreamed of in tha act* and writings of the Apostles. These are the evil works that endanger our glorious federal Union.
