From the moet reliable sources we gather information indicating that the meeting did take place early this morning at Bladensburg, and that shots were exchanged, is not denied. But a friend of Mr. Breckenrtdge denies emphatically that the latter Is wounded. Mr. Catling left the city yesterday afternoon in the half-past 3 o'clock train, and M(. Breckenrldge followed in the train at 5 o'clock. Mr. Catting left ihe traia at Bladjnsbnrg, but Mr. Breckenrtdge being in the express train, was carried to the junction and was obliged to return, which he did iu lime to secure the meeting at the place designated.

The challenge was written by Mr. Cutting on Monday, a short time after the adjournment of the House, and made known to Mr. Breckenrldge about 11 o'clock at night.

The Marshal of the District and the Attorney General are on Hie alert The parties will be prevented from meeting again, even if friends fail to satisfactorily arrange the matter. The afternoon may disclose more.

Greeley's paper has a host of correspon

dent's and assistant editors, and knowing the abolition proclivities of their master, they are always ready to seek out a case of this kind to make

noise over—to disparage the South, or gentleman who happen to have been born in a slave State. They will perhaps never treat the sooth,or southern people or institutions any better, until they go and tesi them on their own soil.

For the Terre-Haute Journal.

Ma. EDITOX: As there seems to be considerable Interest awakened among our clllxeus In regard to the approaching election for Justices of the Peace, It wonld be well if the public mind could be directed to some decided action in Ibe matter, which would result In permanent good to the community.

We want an active, energetic, aud faithful Magistrate among us—one who will at all limes see ihe laws enforced and justice meted out to offenders. With such a man in office, we should soon loose the unenviable reputation which we have unfortunately acquired abroad. I noticed with pleasure, a call, in the "Prairie City" of 27th, on

LAMBEET DU*,

Esq., to allow his name to be pre

sented as a candidate for this office. Mr. Duy is a gentleman, every way qualified to fill it of kuown integrity, possessing a decided aud energetic mind, sound judgement and sterling business qualities, and should he consent to become a candidate, which I am informed he probably will do, I hope he will have the hearty support of his fellowcitizens. 1
