TERRE-HAUTE, INDIANA, FMDAY, MARCH 24, 1854.
The travelling correspondent of tba democratic Press gives the following account of one or two Illinois farms:
I suppose you are aware and doubtless jour readers also are that there are some farms iu this part of the State. I have often heard of Jacob Straws the largest farmer in Illinois, if not in tha United States1 1 went in sight of his farm where be resides some three years since, and regret my inability for want of time to visit it now If objects vast and sublime can excite the mind, certainly those emotions must be awakeued in looking over his homestead of ten thousand acres and gaziug upon herds, far more numerous than the herdsman of old. Job had a thousand oxeu, but I was told that probably no one knew how many cattle Jacob Strawu has. A genl^man weii acquainted with him, told me it was doubtful whether he knew himself. 1 heard various stories as to the number
of
seres of corn he had this year. I will give the smallest number named. It is se^suteen hundred. The gentleman who informed me, said that he bought six hundred acres more, as he feared that he had not enough to keep his stock till corn should grow aguln. Twenty three hundred acres of corn is quite 'a patch.' What say you to this ye farmers of New England? This at forty bushels per acre, a low averagw yield for the last season, gives uiiieiy-tvro thousand bushels. The corn fed to cattle ix not husked, but ia cut up and fed to them on the stalks. I was told of another farm owned by this same man, which is six miles long nnd four broad. Lawt year he paid out $10,000 for feuciuj materials. He has also large tracts of uniuiprov lanl. 1 acknowledge my bump of credulity is large but notwilhxiuntiiug, 1 could not have given credenco to what 1 have stated, had I not received the statement frotn a reliable source. I rode through •patch of coru,' in which it

In reply to the question aa to bow mauy acres his (arm ernb:ac*d, he said that he had 'ouly a thou sand." He did not tell me how many cattle he keeps but said he had oue huudred and seventy moles. I asked him tbe average value of a mule/ lie said that he had refuacd one hundred dollars for each of Uie entire lot. lie considered them worth m'tre. If auy unbelieving, 'down easter' should chance to read this, I would only say 'come and aee.' I meta Vermonter who had come to see, and ha said he was amaxed. The one half had not been told him. After having bought one or two farms,, he has gone home, with tho purpose of sending one of his boys iu the spring with a Hock of Merino sheep. Wo may many others coma, tbsro is
