Uncle Sam in Japan.
It i* perhaps generally known, and therefore well worth the repealing, that Uncle Sam'* head man, the President, desired to have a familiar correspondence with the Emperor of Japan, a gentleman not over communicative at the best, so he wrote a lotter highly complimentary of "His Highness," in which doubtless, a few Yankee questions will be moderately put. Well the President called on Commodore Perry, and made him tho bearer of the letter, and sent
him along with four ships of war no end of guns, rockets, swords, and such like filibus tering articles, along with a few stout Yankee hearts and hands to use them. This was a strong
train, certainly: but not
a bit too much so, when the letter had to be delivered at the port of Jeddo, a point much farther into the interior of Japan than its rulers allowed strangers to reach. But the four Yankee ships went right up, determined to deliver that letter, or die in the attempt. It is the custom of the Japanese lo surround foreign vessels with chains of armed boats| so that no communication can be had with the shore^Over a thousand boats sur rounded uncle Sam's four

The approaching annexations of the Sandwich Islands renders the concentration of our naval forces about those islands a matter of imperative necessity. Ijnder these circumstances, 1 doubt whether Commodore Perry will return to Jeddo for an answer to tho President's letter. He ought certainty not to go there unless prepared to enforce diplomatic etiquette. After taking possession of the half way house to China, we will be better able lo manage the Japan ese, and their calico fortifications.
The administration feel perfectly safe in their present position, and no change of Cabinet will take place for the present. There will be no acknowledged administration leader in either house but then where are tb* chiefs of the opposition 1— Jackson had Clay, Webster, and Calhoun to oppose him but where are the leaders of ihe opposition to General Pierce? The only ad vcise circumstanoes in which the administration can possibly be placed, are those in which it is attacked with rigor by leading whigs, and defended lukewarmly by its own friends.—Bait. Qotsit, Capt.
aid, in speaking of the extravagance that prevails in the World of fashion in New York, says: •^Already our ladies, who make4tftiy'pre tensions to the title of fashionable, have commenced a way of rivalry with the Ku ropeon aristocracy, and if they do not sur pass them in the styU of dress, they are certainly 'their equals in extravagance. In one year a lutly of fashion, living on the Fifth avenue, will expend seven or eight thousand ddlUrs upon dress} snd we are assured, upon the most reliable authority, that a walking or promenade dress, such as is seen occasionally in Broadway, costs from fifteen hundred to two thousand dot Urs.

Our young city iagrowing fast, our commerce and propulstion increase fast, fortunes are made and lost fast, and instead of"fasting and prayer," the universal prayer, is to gel along faster. We verily believe the aga would straddle a rocket or a bomU-shell, lor the sake of speed.
