the strength, and the greatness of thecoun try, and relyiog upon his fidelity to ihe principles of Democracy and progress for an able, brilliant, and efficient administration of publie affairs.? -Those who are making the clamor, and who are so severely exercising themselves about the "success of his administration, are only the sore headed politicians, who have become so vitiated and corrupted by long lines of po litical intrigue, that they think the first, the most impoitant and most respectable duty of a President, consists in the prudent dispensation of Executive patronage. They are the hangers on, the mercenaries, the con tractors of the great Democratic army.
Corruption ia the only formidable enemy to the permanence ot our political institutions. Conflicting parties honorably struggling lor the success of great principles, instead of contributing to the dangers which threaten the prosperity of government, tend to the developeinent of intellect, the incrase of knowledge, and the elevation ol national character. Truth in a fair contest with error must always prevail, and enlightened men by their acquiescence contribute to its strength and permanence. But the experience of every government, of which hit lory furnishes any account, and particularly those which have been called free, abun^ dantly teaches that through the avenues of intrigne the enemies of popular liberty have found their way to influence, power place, and that upon the concealed shoals and reefs of political corruption the hopes ol mankind have time and again been wrecked.
The true friends of the Democratic party, and true Iriend of the Republic, should

forts. ganizalion when the polittcal waters are si rest, as when the enemy are in force in field. 'In peace prepare for war,'is an and established axiom—and if it is good to have the Democratic forces organized when there is a sharp contest for principle, then it is well to see that the strength of the party is not lost by lukewarmneas iq the hour of victory."
