Thomas Mewhinnpy, the father of John Mewbitmey, who had the affray with his son, of which we spoke in our last pap«»r, died on Sunday morning last, from the effects of his wounds which he received in the cncoutiler. The preliminary investiga rion of the case which was to have taken place in the .Mayor's Court, on Tuesday evening last, *as defered from some unknown cause la us, until Saturday the 23d ms». when he will be taken before the Judge of the court of Common Pleas, upon a writ of Habeas Cvrpus. If, from Ihe investigation of the case, the offence upon part of the Defendant amounts to inufder, or a strong presumption of murder, there can be no bail la ken. If, however, the oflonoe manslaughter, tho defendant can be admitted to bail. The investigation of the case is looked fur with more than ordinary interest. It ccrtamly is a case which should excite Home interest.

We recently examined a very fine set of artificial teeth mode by Dr. H. R. Dr. Smith is an excellent dentist, as an examination of the work we speak of, will convince any one.

The business which is to be done can be done in the day-time. Let it be known that all stores in town are to be closed at dark and no one would have occasion to visit tbem after that time. No one suffers inconvenience from the limitation of business hours at a bank. Nor would any one in the other case. We allude to this matter briefly now, io hopes that the attention of our business men in Terre-Haute may be directed to tbe propriety of closing their houses every evening at an early hour. There can be no necessity io a place like Shis of confining, a large number of young men an hour or two every night, aftor proper business hours, which time could be spent by them, more pleasantly and profitably than behind the counter. Why should not some arrangement be made to secure nn early dosing of the stores in town, or why should not the clerks themselves, who are most interested, as a body, request of their employers ih«t they should adopt the change proposed.
The Great Forgery Case at Cincinnati. This case which has been under investigation in Cincinnati forsoihe time past, and which has excited so muoh attention, has been decided, and the defendants, Kissane and Findley, bave been found guilty of the offence allcdged in the indiotment. Findley however escaped from the custody of the Sheriff, and has fled the country. The conduct of the presiding Judge, Flint), has beeu commented upon with many strictures predjudicial to his reputation as a Judge. The prevalent opinion appears to be that he is a corrupt, and unprincipled man, wholly unfit to discharge the duties of a judicial position. The Cincinnati Sun speaking of him says that he has brought himself into a position of great difficulty, and further remarks: lie is either a man unfit for any society but such as a penitontiary affords, or he is a martyr to deceitful appearances, and the most unfortunate circumstances. Judge Flinn may not be in a position rendering him liable to a crimnal impeachment, but he has the scrutinizing eye of his fellow citizens upon bim, and is the object of their censure, to a degree that is torturing that is a most severe punishment. The strange flight of Findley from the court on Saturday evening, has been a subject of Indignant and distrustful oomment—what will bo the feelings of the community when they are ^acquainted with the contents of the following communication of the Sheriff, to the Atlas, published by him in self-defence? The Sheriff was confident the prisoner would escape, and suggested to the Judge the necessity of arresting him, and the Judge coo//y anticipating t*e same occurrence says: No—we will forfeit his bail!' A little villain, a wretch who picks pockets of paltry quarters, may lie in a jail and rot—hut a respectable wholesale conspiring forger, connected with the darkest crimesv who has theived to the tune of tAomands—we will forfeit his bail!
Mr. Editor:—The question is frequently asked me, why I permitted Findley, the forger to escape on Saturday evening last, after the jury had been in the court-room, and when it was certain almost beyond a donbt, that he would be convicted! In justice to myself. I must explain this matter to persons that do not understand it. Findley was at liberty on bail, tnd 1 had no authority, without a direct order from court, to plaee him under arrest, or 1 should have most surely have done it, as I fell confident that he would abscond before the jury would re* turn to the court room with their verdict

A coriesp indent of the Lsporte Times, writing from Texas, says there are hundreds of locations in this whole region for physicians of the right stock. They have very few graduates in the country—are mostly men of very ordinary capacity, and at Marshall, although the place is overflowing with doctors, some of whom do a business of five thousand a year, I was credibly informed that when a man is attacked with pneumonia he makes his will and in nine cases out of ten it is "well made."

Daguerreotyping as a lucrative business is about to be ruined. A New York hatter proposes to give to each purchaser a dagueerreotype of himself, to be insertad in the crown of his hat, and to sell the two as cheap as the hat alone can be sold, calculated that the moderate expense of the picture will be made up by the increase of sales. This is a novel but capital arrangement, which will enable every man who knows his picture to find his hat We have no doubt that it will before lotlg be universally adopted. Like almanacs, pictures will be for gratuituous circulation, compelling looal as weli as nomadic artists to hang up their daguerrettn instruments.

The Crystal Palace. ,»
The inauguration ceremonies of the Crystal Palace will take place on Thursday, the 14th. inst., the day before the Exhibition will be open to the public. The President of the United States and some of tbe Cabinet are expected to be present on the occasion and a brilliant soiree will form a prominent feature in the arrangement of the ceremonies. The collection of musical instruments, including some of the most powerful and very finest toned organs, is said to be large, ar.d from the number of foreign and native musicians present, no doubt the entertainment will be one of the most delightful ever given on this continent. There will be placed in various parts of the building one hundred and thirty four statues as large as life and some of them of colossal proportions, and to judge from the changing tone of the press within the past week or so, we incline to believe that notwithstanding the taunts and sneers that have been uttered against the management, the Exhibition will not fall so far short of the original expectations of the public as has been supposed.

What a commentary on the Stale of society in California is furnished by the closing sentence of Bate's lettterl
Queen Victoria, in refusing to have Mrs, Beecher Stowe presented at her Drawing Room, reflected true honor upon Her Majesty of England^ and goes lar to confirm the reputation she enjoys of being the most sensible woman in Europe.
Among the faded dowagers and ambitious duchesses of England it is refreshing to find towering far above them, as well in moral stature as by rank, the true woman, of courage, and of common sense, lifce Victoria, who refused to lend the authority of her royal name to the contemptible yet injurious excitement of the day and hour. The following account of the affair, copied from the ordinary record of the foreign news, is well worth preserving:1-
At the Queen's grand drawing room, held yesterday, the first time since her accouchement, Ex-President Van Buren was presented by the Amerioan Minister. Other Americans also were presented but the Countess of Shafisbury, the head of the female coterie of abolitionists, was there she was not permitted to present Mrs. Stowe, which it appears she took so much in dudgeon as to present no one, though there was not wanting plenty of her friends aspiring to the honor and expecting it from her.
It is to be hoped that this action of the Queen will have the effect of checking the absurd toadyism, half ironical, and wholly mischievous, with which Mrs. Stowe has been received in England, and will suggest to the Shaftsburys, Sutherlands, and other lofty names of the British nobility, a return to their dignity and duty. It really snetns too great a farce to see these noble and time honored names appended to ihe public ovations to Harriet BeecherSlowe and the Black Swan—and besides, furnishes an unanswerable argument to prove the utter uselessness of a nobility and an aristocracy.—N- 1"., Sachem. .. it 4* «r

Suppose we should hear of thirty-five, or even the smaller number, of sixteen negroes in the South dying suddenly from exhaustion or over work. Suppose the New Orleans papers should announce ten negroe£ had been worked to death by their masters in the hot sun! What a tremendous hue and cry there would be raised about it all through the North! Every abolition paper North of Mason and Dixon's line would have food for six months, and the whole world would resound with the cry of cruelty to the negroes and the inhumanity of the slave holders. But such a thing oannot be. No owner of slaves would permit them to work themselves to death in the hot sun. It is only the free laborer, working for his daily breod, that is pressed on to such extremes. A man whose wife and children at home are waiting hungry for the proceeds of his daily toil, ir. his desperation takes the risk, pushes on, and dies with over exertion."
