We letrn lhai theateamer Hiram Powers was burned to the water's edge on Saturday morning last, "while lying ai a wood-yard on the Wadash river, S3 mile* above its mouth. The Powers was bound for Pittsburgh and laden with bbl. pork, bulk meat, tobacco, etc., taken moaily from the wreck of the steamer Bride, which boat was sunk in that river several week* ago. The fire orriginated on the after-deck. The Powers was scuttled in 6 feet water at the bow, and 9 feet at the stern. A considerable quantity of the pork will be saved. No lives lost. She was owned in Cincinnati.

I* Religion Beautiful!

Always! In the child, the maiden, the wjfe, the mother, religion shine* with a holy, be* •lignum beauty of its own, which nothing of earth can mar. N«ver yet was the female character perfect, without the steady faith of piety. Beauty, intellect, wealth! ihey arc like pit falls, dark in the brightest day, unless (he divine light, utiles* religion throw her soft beams around them, to purify and exalt, making twice glorious that which eeemed all loveliness before.

Religion is very beautiful—in health or sickness, in wealth or poverty. We never enter the sick chamber of the good, but soft rntnic (iormis to float on the air, and the burdon of their song is, 'Lo! peace is here.'

Could we look into thousand of families to-day, where discontent sits fighting sullenly with lile, we should find the chief cause of unhappiness, want of religion in woman.

And in felons' cells—in places of crime misery, destitution, ignorance—we should buhold in all it* most horrible deformity, the fruit of irreligion in woman.

Oh, religion! benignant majesty,'high on

thy throne thou slitcst, gloriout and exalted Not above the clouds, (or earth-clouds cone m'var between the® and the truly pious sou! —not beneath the clouds, for above thco is heaven, opening through broad vista of t'Xueeding beauty.

Its gates in the Iplendor of Jasper and prccious stones, wnue wiin duwy lijjht that neither (lashes nor blazos, but steadily pro ceedeih from the throne of God. Its towers bathed in rufulgnnt glory ten times the bright* tiesa of ten thousand suns, yet soft, undoz zling to the eye.

And there religion points. Art thou wenry it whispers, •rost—up there—f»«r«ver.' Art thou sorrowing? •'eternal joy." Art thou weighed wi:h unmerited ignominy I 'kin^s and pilosis In OiHt holy home/ Art thou poor! 'the very street belore thy mansion nhall bo g»ld.' Art thou friendless/ 'the nnjrels shall be the Companions and God thy Friend end Father.'

Is religion beautiful? \V« nn»w?r, all is desolation and deformity where religion is not.

"Mothxh axd Son Doing Wiai.."—Suoh is tne announcement by the lust steamer in regard to Queen Victoria. We think there can be no misiake in slating that the moth er is doing well—remarkably well.
