FOE THE TBRHE-HACTE JOORXAU "JE votings Out" No. It. Donee tamen ista pneliU.' *—Juvenal. "Ye flyite," say* a quaint old English writer, "has no hearte," indicating pretty clearly the judgement passed in olden times, upon those whose conduct in matters of love procured for them the appellation.— Again in another place the same writer re marks: "Who dallyes with the heartes of tnenne as If they be thyngea to pleye with, and trjfle in couruhippes doascertainlye be plspued with unmanerly and brutish hut bandes all their dayes a punishment, which, if generally thought sure to follow, might cause a marked change in the conduct of '"faire ladyes" of the present day. ike Marvel in his "Reveries of a Bach elor," distinguishes between the flirt and the Coquette, gM t' reference to the latter and an acquaintance of mine. Mist Priscilla. upon my accusing hir of filling very indignantly denied the charge, calling my attention to his thoughts on the subject, and naively confessing she might some lime be bf little coquetry. Taking his a* a correct de-tcripiicn of l'te two characters, it would be imprudent lor me to guess, how much she was prompted by vanity in making the remark.
Without desiring, howevor, rashly to call in question auch high authority as Mr. Mitchell, I venture to insinuate that the flirt is the more aimfcble ar.d better or the two. If Byron makes any distinction between them it is I think, such a one as 1 have indicated. The following lines will be recognized as his. Such i* your old Coquette who can't say "no" And won't s«y "yea" and keeps you on and offing On a Ice shore, till il begin* to blow, Then aeea your heart wrccked with an inward acofiin(| This works a world of sentimental woo And sends new Werter* yearly to ther coffin, Hut yet ia merely Innocent flirtation.
Wherein it would seorn to be implied that to call coquetry flirtation, *as giving it in the eyes of the world, a less harsh, and a more innocent character.
By many, coquetto and flirt are regarded as synonymous terms, and custom seems, in a great measure, to have sanctioned their use as such. Whatever distinction, therefore, may be existing between the two must bo difficult precisely to point out. If 1 were to attempt it, I should voy that the person who designedly engages the affections of another for thti purpose of trifling with them, should properly be called a coquette while the one who carulfssly and without thought, assumes the character on I dtineanor of a lover may he styled a flitt. The coquette strives to elicit aflltction without any desire or intention to rccipiocate tho feelings awakened the flirt may for a time bo interest-«-d herself, but becoming more completely so in another quarter, sudddettly discards the former lover. Tho diiferunco between them is, in the respect to previous design.-— As my fiiend Pluto*, who is a lawyer, would say, the Coquette bctrnya "malice aforethought*' which the flirt does not.
Addison semis not to havo regarded flirts an very culpable, but the writers in the Spectator showed to ccquettes no mercy, and ridiculed their ptnetices as among ihfe evils ol Society in their time.
The word coquette, 1 find, was introduueed Into tho French language in the time of Catharine do Medici, but at what period into ours, it is difficult of ascertaintainment, though it had come into very familiar use amnn^ the wits of Queen Ames's reign its signification has probably changed very little from that lime to this.
Flirt is a term, which has long been applied to girls, originally, most likely, as descriptive of their frisky, sprightly motions, as. until recently, it seems to havo been used to indicate giddiness and thoughtless* less of manner, as well in other matters, as in those pertaining to love.
Thoughtlessness would therefore seem to bo a characteristic of the flirt Jrhioh is agreeable to the distinction 1 have^aid down, in speaking of the difference btlween flirt, and coquette. With us of the Prairie City the former appellation has almost entirely superceded the latter, which may be the case everywhere. It is only by danoing the "coquetto" occasionally that we are reminded of the term.
4
There was formerly another t&m applied to maleooquetts, who now in common phrase come under the general appellation of flirts, which has, at tho present day grown into desuetude. I alluded to the term fritbier*. It seemed to imply a oourse of condual lets excusable even than that of coquet* ry/ln No. *88 of the Spectator, the fribbforis described as one 'who professes rapture and admiration for the woman whom he address* ee, and dread* nothing as much as her cooMat.' Have we awjr fribWers amongst ua, end can all our young gentlemen, who are called flirt*, be so styled? It Is hoped that "the counstTor'' has no»J*cquired a character of ifcat sort.
Why so many gentlemen of our place are called flirts it would be difficult to say. To have tuch accusations brought against my friends as waa made on the occasion refered to la ray former communication, has set me to thinking frequently, as it did then, what manner of times we have, and whether any excuse can be formed for ihe^H (provided they are ju«lged to be g«Uty) in ihe state of society at the present time existing. I have
suKpected indeed, others may do»e nutcfc i» il» «m» »ti lwW few! uriWoag. 1 .l.I v. «f life* that of tMwfc Wttar tinw uy otiMr perhaps, ih»t ihe cry or tike I»M ot TW» to **ilop thief," rnny k* by tho«e,wbo «ri«h la diveH *ttestis from them* •elv««. Ikt, admitting ih« t«y trteada art properly charged* way it »t be wud of them by way of excuse thai beio^ fewl of tadi«i* society, a* 1 know they are, they tore In4«oc4 to assume thai character boijeuae the
ladies themselves wilt not admit of their occupying any other relationship towards them than that of a bare acquaintance or a lover, knowing nothing of the intermediate position of friend. "Marriages no being proposed by way of friendship" the females seem to ignore '.he term so far as gentleman are concerned. This I confess to be the suggestion of Plutes, who by no means young* has since makiog a "feeble observation," on last Tuesday, ''pretty much quit" writing for the Press, and desires a word or two said in his behalf- The insinuation contained in the last sentence that marriage is the only object in life, which women have in view, 1 of course, would not wish to be helg! responsible for. "Whether or no it is really less culpable in them or not I shall not say, but we more readily overlook flirtations carried on by the girls than we do those by the gentlemen. With the former they seem to be a sort of exciting amusement resorted to as relief from ennui, and which, giving them something to do and think, about make them more interesting and piquant. 'How much such conduct tends to remove all freshness and tenderness of feeling, and lav bare the heart a common and a waste, let themselves who pursue it be the judges!
Such, perhaps, was the substance of what I said to my Dulcinea, in the conversation I had with her upon Flirtation, I had intended to give her observations upon the subject also, but when 1 came to ask her permission to do so last uight, she positively refused to give it. "LE GARCON."
