Watchman gives in account ol the proceed ings of a Mute Coovenuon which assembled in the village on Wedueaday last. It was composed of some lewolj or eighty deaf mutes of both sexes, from different glitM, but principally from Vermont. The objects of the convention was mutual im provemem. and the raising of funds far the •rection of a mannmeut to the memory of their much beloved teacher. The Watch man says the proceedings were extremely interesting to themselves, and quite as much so to the inhabiisotj of the village who witnessed the silent communication of ideas by signs, and partook of the spit it of devotion as prsyer was ofiered to Htm who hears thi» thoughts of the sincere heart as readily when conveyed by signs as when uttered by the to&gue.
Strikes.—The N. Y. Sun, which »s «ud to be good authority among real working men. givea the following views in relation to strikes: "The men who get op ••rftrikes" are not the men who favor making "ability" the test for fixing wages. They are for placing the able and indifferent workmen on a perfect level. They will uot permit the emplover to decide what each man's labor is worth to him'/ but arbitrarily proceeds to fix one's rste of wsges, for all. good and bad and then provoked the workmen to strike unless the employer submits to their presumptuous law.',
'Sir,' said a blustering man to hit his religious opponent, 'I ssy sir, to what sect do you think I belong?' •Well I don't exactly know,' replied the other,'but to judge from your size and ap pearance, I should think you belonged to a cla*s called the insects'

HE above is a wood cut cf a double-geared Qu?en of the South" Corn Mill. We manufacture aCob Breaker of great strength and durability, and ease of operation.
We place this nsttful contrivance on all sizes of Vfills, by which in ran* we convert a Corn Mill into a Stock Feed Mill but a few minutes work to put It on, or take It oiT.
We manufacture portable Mills, single and doable geanH (b*»t quality of French burrs) to grind Wheat,Corn and Stock Feeds, calculated for steam, water or horse power. These Mills have been run by steam and horse power In competition agnlust the other make of Mills of our city, at our State Fairs, and have never failed to carry off the first premium—on one occasion was awarded a beautiful sliver medal. Our Mills, al«9 took two first premiums, as tlia best Milts, at two annual Fairs of our Mechanic's Institute.
ALSO—Portable Suw Mills, to be run by steam, water or horse power. This Mill wai exhibited in operation by hone power, at the Ohio State Fair, in 18&0, when It was awarded a premium aud a splendid sliver medal.
A LSO—Dlffersnt kinds of portable horsepowers, and steam Engines. All our articles, for ease of operation, simplicity, ascfuluess, aud durability, uro surpassed by none now in use.
AH our articles are warranted as represented— or bo safe—at our cost of transportation and the money refunded. ii
For a full description and testimonial! of merit and usefulness we refer thoso interested to our pamphlet, to bo had at our factory, where we take pleasure to explain each article.

rows, while exhibiting a Barrows Mill at our State Fair, last fall, was boiateroua about his Mill, and courageously entered Into a verbal agreement with me to grind corn thus: whoever griuds the most, regarding quality aud quantity, was to be the owner of both mills, at each and every trial. rissT TSUL.
Strsnb to run an 18 Inch Mill Burrows St Co. to run a 30 Inch Mill. SECOND TSUIStraub to ruu a 39 inch Mill Burrows St Co. to run a 34 inch Mill.
THISD TRIAL.
Strsub to run a 36 inch Mill Burrows k. Co. to run a 30 Inch Mill. When the pluch came, that boisterous ccarage stepped out.
To the above I now append a challenge to grind cob feed out of whole ear* of corn. I will run mv 18 Inch "Qurtn of tkt South," with a cob-breaker attachment, tht tame article that t*ok the prrmium at the Ohio State Fair, l«tt fall, against a 34 inch Burrows Mill and William Stewart's Ohio aud Kentucky Stock Feed Mills, both to be run at once and If you are apprehensive of a rlskv business, you have tny entire approbation to run Mi. Pomeroy's Corn Crusher as an auxiliary. Should my single article fall to grind eqnal in quality and quantity to the combined productions of the two or three mills (just as you please) then you can draw a few hundred dollars as stakes put up.
Come boys, don't bo cowardly—there ts nothing like walking strait Into the merits of a thing. Feb. 4, Ib53-l9-6m ISAAC STRAUB.
