«T|U mBS St. Valentine'* Daf. The festival of St Valentine lasts seven daya from the I4th« but in this country i« usually done dp that day. It recorded on this day each bird of the air chooses its mate- Our ancestors, says a cotemporary were pretty close observers of nature and there is but little doubt that, a» they noticed birds which first began to build and pair at this period, when the weather was favorable, so natural an occurrence might lead youth and maidens imitating the custom by selecting lovers, glad of an amusement after the cold mid-winter has passed, and as far back as the day can be traced, it is linked with the mating of birds.
The gentry in England nearly two centuries since, adopted the custom of choosing Valentines as one of their social sports.— When the opposite sex drew out the name of his or her Valentine*, it was looked upon as an omen of their beiog afterwards united.
We believe ihe day tiaa its ongtb about the secoud century of the Christian era. and owes its name to Valentines, a diaiinguisited personage who flourished at that time.
