The Springjiete Journal of the 20th says Considerable excitement was taftnifeaited in the House on Tuesday afternoon, upon a motion to lay the Atlantic and Mississippi Railroad bill on the table. This road is better known as Col. Brough** road, running from St. Louis to Terre-Haute, and is held to be directly opposed' 19 the interests of the Alton line. The champions of the "State policy," are oi course dead set, all the time, against any scheme to divert trade and cap* it al from our own to points in other StatesFrom the expression on Tuesday, we could hardly judge of the pulse of the House. Even Mr. Buckmaster himself, we imagine, came far short of a definite conclusion. The bill was read once, and will probably come up for reference next Monday. From the
nature and extent of
we expect to see hard fighting on both sides,
jn'.orest, be was a fair and conscientious legislator, and poseisod oratorical poweri which mad® an encounter with him any^ting but agreeable to his fellow members.

fe John W. King is the author of a pamphlet in the form of a memorial Iddressed to the Legislature of the several States of the United §tal*s. The plan proposed, says the Cincinnati Gazette, is to choose the Executive from the members of the Senate, by. lot. The object'sought to be secured is the abolition of the.system and its kindred abuses, and to promote the election of as officer who shall not owe his elevation to mere party ambition, and who shall not, in advance, be committed to the elevation of any eiiqtte, or furtherance of any platform of measures, This subject is now exciting much thought throughout the country, and whether the plan proposed be a correct one or not. there is, we are assured, a wish on the part of many, that a change of some kinu might be accomplished. ,,

Q&- A Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune, thus speaks of Mr. Pet tit our newly elected U. Si Senator. Mr. Pettil's, election will add much to the intellectual ability and legal kuoweledge of the Senate, which have come to be sadly deficient in the first, if not this second named requisite for the proper discharge of the trust and duties imposed on them. Yet he is one of the oldest fishes ever in public life in this country. When in the House some years Aflpi he was remarkable for hiving a way oMiis own in doing everything! never arriving at results in common with his party, by traveling the road to them the latter took. He was "death on" official chaplaincies, rarely failing to make a speech once a year against paying any such functionaries out of the public funds. The new victory, surpaasing alt iorxner victoriea, to which yon have referred, baa thrown wide open the portals of a bright futuro for the career of America. No people ever gave to their country an impulse more animating or a direction more auspicious. Amid countleas trophies of success, won in the field* of persevering principle and experiment, the Democracy takes a fresh start, and, with redoubled energies aud convictions, aims to achieve, in the second half of the nineteenth century, even more than the genius of Jefferson impelled her to accomplish in the first. From the lofty point we have now attained, how bound less the horizon how magnificent the prospect! Where, upon this continent, is the dyke that shall a lay the onward roll of popular sovereignty, popular self-government, popular enlightenment, popular happiness? Where, throughout the world, ia power sufficiently strong and perverted to impede a current which bears ou its bosom, hope, comfort, kindness, dignity and peace, for the masses of mankind?"
Beanty of Jewesses.
It is related that Chateaubriand, in returning from his eastern travels, was asked if he could assign a reason why the woman of the Jewish race were so much handsomer than the men, when he gave the following one:
Jewesses,' he said, 'have escaped the
bands and sons. Not a Jewess was to be seen amongst the crowd of priests and rabble who insulted the Son of God, scourj$e3^im, crowned him with thorns ani subjected him to infamy end the agot.y of the cross. The wom»n of Judea believed in ihe Savior, and ai3H?od aqi spQthed him under affliction. A woman of Botluny poured on his head precious oir.fnent, whi&h she kept in vases of alabaster. LOOK OUT Foil THK WOMAN —The genius of tho
Cleveland Piaindcaler
is about as
profound as "Seth Stokes, the man who knew how to manage the woman.'' Hear him:
Young man! keep your eye peeled when you are after the woman. If you bite at the naked hook you are green. Is a pretty dress so attractive! Of a pretty face even!— Flounces, boy, are ofno sortofconittquence. A pretty face will grow old. Paint will wash off. The sweet smile of the flirt will give way to the scowl of the termagaui.—-The neat form will be pitohod into dirty calico. Another and a far different being will take olaco of the lovely goddess whosmiledsweet smiles and eat your sugar candy.
Keep your eye peeled boy, when you are after the woman. If the little dear is cross and scolds at her mother in the back room, you may be sure that you will get particular fits all around the house. If she apologise* for wiping dishes, you wilt need a girl to fan her. If she blushes when found at tho wash tub with sleeves rotted up, be sure, sir. that she is one of the codfish aristocracy—little breading and leas sense. If you marry a gal who knows nothing but to commit woman slaughter upon the piano, you have got the poorest piece of music ever got up. Find the one whose raotd is right, and then pitch in. Don't be hanging round like a sheep thief, as though ashamed to be seen in the day time, but walk up like a chicken to the dough and ask for the article like a man.

^SwatL-FiSu.—There are four regular stands in toe market for oysters aad clams, of which one haedredaad forty thousand cu.lara worth are sold yearly. The manner of Ukiug the oyster* and preparing them for market is both peculiar aad interesting. In this State and Virginia, whence the moat abundant sapptie* are obtained, there are a large number of extensive beds in the beys, Inlets, and rivers. Before planting, (sa lt Is caK«L} a bed of oysters, the size of the bed is marked out with stake*. This ia always done ia the summer, when the eyetars ere conveyed idbeat*. aod thrown overboard, within the prescribed limits.
Ia the following winter they are taken up, "called" off, or separatee! into foar sizes, denominated "extras, targe* culling* and bushels," and laid oa shore or ia the waters of soma creek for the purpose of removing the spawn, with which a portion of the tbeil is covered. When they are freed from the spawn, they are considered fit for market, and are brought by schooners and sloops to this city. The oyster* receive their name from the river or bay from which they are taken. One or iwo of the dealers transact a large business with the western part of Jfew York, to which tbey »end the oysters in cans. The total rales of clams ia one year does not exceed twenty thousand dollars, sad the greatest quantity is obtained front Jersey.

While it is melancholy to reflect upon the sad fate of this fair girl, who, rich in the possession of all the highest qualities that adorn womanhood, and surrounded by loving and admiring friends, was cut down in the very spring-time of life, yet it is a, consolation to her sorrowing relatives aud friends to kuow thai she early sought relief from the pangs of disease in the blessed truths of Divine revelation, that culm, and resigned, she "died not as oue without hop?."
