George W. Julian.$

The rights offree speech, and free thought were ably vindicated by this gentleman at our Court House? on Tuesday last. Ruffian violence under the cover of night, had assailed a principle dear to every true American heart to vindicate that principle, Bnd to retrieve the character of the town, men of bII parties and shades of opinions, assembled to hear Mr. Julhn. Mob violence had been threatened a small mob had actually assembled with bricks in their hats their leader looked in the door to reconnoitre, but their courage had oozed out at their fingers' end, the signal of attack was not given, the speaker was not interrupted, the meeting was not disturbed, lite right of free speech was maintained. Hereafter let it be understood that mobs are not to be tolerated in Terre Haute, that law and order are to be maintained, and that the officers of the law. are to see that it is respected and enforced. On* resolute man, armed with (he power of the law is sufficient io preserve order* and airest any ordinary mob if he needs assistance, it is his duty to summon the citizens to his aid, and if any man refuses, he makes himself amenable in heavy pains and penalties. The loweal promptings to action policy, interest, self preservation, are all opposed to mobs the genius of our institutions, the spirit of the ag3, the teachings of the great Exemplar, the laws of the land, are all opposed to mobs let these things be duly considered, and hereafter there will be no necessity for lectures of this .kind. We doj not belong to Mr. Julian's party we are known as a tolerably active member of another political organization, with it we have co-operated since wefirat lisped a political word, or drew a political breath, andwe expect to continue in that organization as long as it commands the assent of our reason and judgement, certainly until Vigo county becomes regenerated, until the banner of Democracy is planted on the outer wall of this hitherto impregnable whig fortress but while such are our sentiments, and while we moan to maintain them, we can listen with calmness to their controversion, and will checrfully accord to others, the exercise of the same rights which we demand for ourselves having stood the fire of the great whig party without flinching, wo think we ore in no danger of being driven from our position, even by the koen, bright Dampens blade of a Julian. *.
