We hare juat listened lo the reading of the Declaration of independence. This instrument was aigned 76 year* ago to*day a( Philadelphia by die members of the American Congress, and the terse, eoociee, manly and bold language, in which it was written by its venerable author, the great Jefferson, •Un vibrales the heart* of every one. who i* »«n«ble at the contemplation of a suffering, high-minded nation, which, trusting in God ana the justice of bar cause, unalterably resolved, lo break the galling and degrading fetters of tyranny,

Prom this day—be 4th of July—(he existence

country dates and the event which gave rise to it, claims by the consequences, which have resulted from it, aad which are still in process of developemeni, to be celebrated as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God by millions of happy freemen, who share in the blessings of that day. Let also, my beloved countrymen, freely join In the chorus of this general jubilee for to us also belongs (he pride of being citizens of the great American Republic let us also become eonscioos of the importance of this day, aa of a day of divine manifestation of grace to us, who have come from afar off •country, to seek an asylum and home for ourselves or to provide one for our children. it is the first time, that we, tbe German inhabi tants of this beautiful town and county, have met, to celebrate this day as a German festival and I but repeat your own sentiments, when I say, that the circumstance of its happening to come on the Sabbath day, is favorable to an appropriate celebration of it. It not the mind of men, freed from the cares of the week, more collected, more given to reflection and meditation? And is not the only rational observance of the Sabbath, to lift man from the every'day cares and pursuits of life, to the contemplation of the divine nature of man, to God and immortality, which as tbe end and ultimate object of our existence should never be lost sight of? And are tbe grateful feelings of our hearts for the blessing! of thi« dsy not an acceptable •acrific© to Deityl Should, therefore, a short contemplation of this day not be calculated, to make us all better and wiser men, and to inspire our minds with patriotism and love of country?

Rigbteousnssa exaiteth nation, bat sift f* reproach to any people." Th«« exclslras Solomon lo his ck.

t«, mtm 34. Solomon says (tfwho prayed to tKe Lord, to grant him, not riohes, but the greatest boon of mortal man—wisdom, and who was blessed with both. His reign constitutes the most glorious epooh in the history of the Jews, where each person could rest under his own vine and fig tree. But under his reign some evils, engendered principally by his own example, manifested themselves, and luxury and its cocoomitant sins, made the people effeminate, deptived them of courage, and prepared them for the ultimate decline and fall of their empire.

Righteousness exalted* fjnaHqn, bu reproach to any people," I. Riphleoumesi exaltelh a nation.

Divine providence manifests itself three-fold, first by nature, the contemplation of ourselves and what surrounds us secondly, by revelation in the Holy 83rlptures thirdly, by the evenU of tbe life of nations or by history.

And this is exactly the principal end of the study of history, to reoogniza the working ef divine providence not to despair, when mighty, powerful empires, di»tinguished for wealth, the arts and science*, fall and crumble in the dust not to be oonfounded, but tt hold to this truth, even if history lays open before our eyes the singular spectacle of simplicity and refinement, of civilisation and bar barism, or wealth and poverty.

And our motto fhm the proverbs of Solomon is oor.Rrmed by and in the history of our country: ••Righteousness exnheih nation." 1 have frequently read in books and heard It repleated, that we, the ehizens of tbe North American Republic, had no history. It is untrue we have a glorious, great, instructive history. Granted, that it goes not back for many centuriea into the dark and nebulous origin of a nation, when at first a state of savage ferocity, remote from every oulture, is discernible, when agriculture, the arts and science* are still unknown, when gradually a state of »emi«civiljxatioo or barbarism take* plaoe, and when at last the seed of civilixation is scatter ed, and theaun of light and life makes it grow and vegetate. Moat singular i* the origin of our oountry, and as such it stande forth in history as solitary and alone.

From the scattered and widely dispersed ami*

rants from Great Britain, Prance, Holland, Sweand Germany, ia formed a State, which take* its plaoe among the oivilixitd nations of the earth at once. It is rich in the productiveness of its

but still poor in population, It continues to grow with an atnaxing growth, for righteousneas guide* and instructs it, and "righteoutoe** exaiteth a nation.'.8 Unheard of in the history of nations, the oonfoderaoy of State* rises during the last half een» tury to a pinnacle of power and importance, that in maritime power they are only surpassed by England, and ia rich, inexhaustable power are ear* jnwyj by none.

After the illegal, oppressive policy of the Britiati Government baa owed tbe people of the oolootes lo resistance, the first blood in the great struggle of the American revolution waa shed at Lexington on the 19th of April, 1775. England put forth all her ftrvngth in the contest, for she knew that ah* had lo deal with an aoacny, strong by hi* trust in his own good am, in the justice of hit oaute, and in hie God. And now the American Coogrea* select•d tor the commander of their force* ia the impending struggle, the man, on whom every American delights to look with a pardonable pride, tbe man, whoee name will be the watchword of nation* struggling for freedom, a* long as tyrants remain to bo trodden ia the dust'

moron, who had woo hi* *purs twentv yeara hefore in the war between England and Friftoe* Led to battle by thi* distinguished man who was anK mated with etnoere piety, and glowing with love of that oountry, for whteh he was ready to give hit Jbrtaae and hit file, the American* fought with variable sucoaea, uatil the earrender of the British

Time, a* well as the object of thi* lecture forbid, to Miter minutely into the detail of the struggle, and to place before yon the name* of all the great men to whom America is indebted for ber freedom, independence aad happiness. They have town good seed, and God will send hi* rain to water it, and ripen it towards the day of tbe harvest.

Since that period tbe republic of the United State*, which with tbe stride of a giant advanced in power, greatness and population, offered to tbe oppressed people of Europe, and has become to millions, an asylum, a plaoe of rest from oppression and poverty, and untold thousands will continue to brave the storm* and wavee of the Atlantic, to enjoy like us in this country of liberty the blessings of a Government, based upon righteousness and the right* of men. The migration* of nations, alike to yon great luminary of the day, always go from east to west even now we witnes* the same phenomenon in history: the current of emigration 1* westward, and promote* commerce, competency, wealth, and the spread of tbe Gospel. "Righteousness exaiteth a nation."

And righteous i* our contry toward* other people, for it extend* to them hoepitaliiy and a welcome f-"1

Righteous in estimating at its value any excellence, which we may have, and in striving to convert them to the jie of tbe commonwealth

Righteous, in maintaing the inviolability of treaties, and avoiding a collision with Austria and Russia, even though Louis Kossuth, tbe martyr, statesman and christian eloquently plead* for ber *upport.

But our country i* also righteous towards itself. We, obildren of this country with humility and grateful heart*, feel the dignity of American citizen*. We despise the pitiuil facility, to ferret out faults we glory in ber privileges, laws and govern* ment. Love of this country inspire* the rich and the poor in war more volunteers flock to the banner of the start and stripes, than are necessary to vindicate tbe honor and rights of tbe country.— A great futurity awaits this country, probably a more brilliant oareer, than any nation of ancient or modern times has ever run. While others groan under tbe iron rod of a tyrant, our government, by wise legislation provide* for raising up, exalting the people to the highest summit of liberty and perfeolability.

May God grant, that this love of country grow with our growth, and strengthen with our strength. Ohl if it cools down and leaves us then selfishness will enter through the gates and doorways, and selfishness will weaken the body politic the common weal of the State will be disregarded civilization, wealth, union and christian love will take wings and the State will enter upon its decline and fall for

I. "Sin is a reproaoh to any people." It is neceseary my friends, to direct your attention to the axiom that the eternal law of the eternal Pather "th* wages of sin are death," is applicable to State*, as it prove* it* truth in individuals and families. For thousanda of years past, mighty empires have flourished through the arts of peace. But what was often the seouel of *uch brilliant orbit? Vile ambition which levels the exalted in the dust, and raises it* own sordid self into higher piece* the insolence of the high, arousing the vengeance of the low the deterioriation in morals luxury, splendor, and effeminacy selfishness, which, untying the chord, that binds the individual to the State, smooths the path to distraction the State consequently fell an easy prey to their barbaric neighbors. Look at Rome, and say, if the picture I have drawn, is not correct—Nay, look on* for a moment to that old oountry which gave us birth, but treated us like step-children.

Par be from us the perversity of mind, the want of charily, which attributes the accidental ills, to which humanity ia heir to, such aa want, fire, war, and pestilence, as the immediate punishment, inflicted by Providence if we did, it would also follow, that the circumstance of external happiness and success, waa a reward by Providence for virtue and a god-like life—and yet where is the man, who oould then boaat of happiness? No, my friends, wi'h heartfelt sorrow we contemplate the oppression, which weighs like an incubus upon our brothers in Germany, an oppression which in the course of time muet necessarily carry along an innumerable train of evils,—with heart* overflowing with compassion, we witness the impoverishing of the people, which alwsys leads in its train abasement of the mind and of the moral faoulties but enough, let us not sadden the glory of this day by pursuing this theme, farther than to ask: what is the cause of all this misery? 1 answer, Ambition, avarice, luxury of the men in power, servility and corruption of the governed, and principally a want of religious feeling. Infidelity take* from man the only staff on which he can lean with safety, to find among the storms of life a higher asylum God, the Pather Jesu* Christ, the Redeemer, immortality, and retribution of the just and unjust, all are with the emtio of a demon taken from them. On the other band superstition, inoredible a* it may be, appear* from the light of the general intelligence of the masses, the effort, to lead people baok into the dreary deaerts of ignorance, for the remote object of making an ambition* prinoe or prieel the absolute master of Ibe wealth and souls of individuals.

What wonder then, that discord and destruction have away, that the interest of the citizen is lost In the aervility of the individual I And ohl what joy if we oould save our oountry men in Germany from their impending fate, by welcoming them to the hoe pliable shores of free America!

But even kere, my friends, enough remains to be done, especially in regard to ohurobee and schools. Thane are after all, the main foundation of the pablio wed and how can we, how can the feneration that ia to come after a*, be happy without alloy, while eeotarianiam, auperttition and ignoranee apread their black garments of mourning over the people.

But enough. The day Is given to joy, that God la his goodness haa led us hither, where more than Ia nay coantrv on the faoe of the globe, the germ* of felicity and happiness are soittered to tbe heartfelt thanks toward* Providence, which ha* directed in Its wisdom the step* of your cpeaker toward* thi* ^land of the free and home of tbe brave."

May oar aew country won become to us att a dearly cherished home, a oountry which shall draw to It oar strongest feelings of attachment.
