With the most winning simplicity—the gentlest utterances—amf most tender pathos did aha appeal to that home feeling that dwelb fen every heart—and the tear that glistened a* it coursed, not only down "the pale cheek of beauty,1' but streamed down the rougher cheek of man, gave proof that nature's voice 1* never heard in vain. Then, again, obaerve the felitter Incongruity and want of keeping In the ornaments.
This which, from its very nature, excludes the florid and flighty In ornament, was overlaid with sudden transi* with shakes, and roulades sntlrdy counter to, and *Lbtersive of the aenUment of the aeug! The singer meehrod a merited encore in '•Rorr O'More" and thea gate la raaponao W hif'* a* tbe Steer Kimmer. "SomtiM Cielo" although to those already made, was yet oa the whale, wet! and spiritedly, wa bad almost said brilliantly given. Belonging, it did to an order of composition diferent from its associate*, it admitted of a mare orotte and florid eatecution^— Hie staccato aad synccpatod paasagca, especially tbe hater were besuUfaily renderad. Tbe Piano and Forte tonea were®d1*tribnted over the composition with an effect, only of a more thrilling tare, like to that which the artist produce# by the doe distribution af light aad shade aver his {Mara. Aad have :f anywhere in the programme, there arss room and verge eaoagb for the artist-like display of graceful and appropriate ornament: EmbeHifhrnenta, it is true ware attempted, but the trill, aad the turn, and the ronlade, introduced la this ease were of precisely similar character to thoaa called into requisition ta lead an additional charm to "Annie Laurie'*—to heighten the graces of the"LaaaO'GowriaM-aBd ta decorate "Home, sweet Home-** None of that insinuating delicacy of structure—nor that dream-like, touching cadenza—none of those mexy, varying, yet blended tones of beauty by which th* true child of song warWes.aa from hey to key, she winds her modulating way, aad enthralling the listening seal, takes it captive, It scarcely knows bow and cares not wherefore.
As we have before intimated the only piece of the evening not marred by unseemly additions was, "When Twilight Dews." In this, tbe sentiment was elaborated with more care, and truth to nature—tbo soft, unforced, and sweet, tones of tbe singer's voice were allowed fuller play—and, as *a consequence, a correspondingly pleasing effect was produced. The cloae of the second line of each stanza exhibited much sweetness and power of expression. The portamento that (generally) so much abused and overworked style was here used with beautiful effect—token altogether litis song wss given with true feeling, tbe mnsic being made tbe vehicle by which to convey the sentiment to and touch the hearer's heart As regard* the quality of Madam Abiainowicz'c voice It struck us that the upper tones were comparatively hard and unpleasing, while the middle and lower ones were, especially the former, pure, and full of melody. Much practice has given the Artiste considerable power of execution still, the organ labours as if it lacked, by nature, that ease and flexibility necessary to the facile performance of the more elaborate productions of the great masters. Her voice 1* of considerable com paw and powerThere can be no doubt that in the management of her voice the Artiate evinced, on this occasion at least, a lack, both of taste and judgment as well as a want of self appreciation aa to wherein iU true power lies. Willi respect to the first, as much force and physical exertion were applied as if she were holding forth to an audience at the Grand Opera—forgetful of the fact that she was singing In a room, which, being filled to Its utmost capacity, cannot contain more than about three hundred persons,—and, regardless also of that fact in acoustics, that the tones of the voice which are produced with ease arc precisely those which carry farthest and arc the most distinctly heard. Hence, the mere whisperings of Jenny Lind, for example, were clearly heard in the most remote crantiics of Castle Garden. Instead, however, of proportioning in «oma degree the volume of sound to tbe size of the room, she opened wide her mouth and forccd therefrom a rashlng torrent of sound, that, If it tickled not, did, at least, "split the ears of tbo groundlings" and—made their heads ache. Then as to the second point—it is equally clear that the tones of her voice which are the most mellifluent, effective, and pure, are those she produces with ease and comfort to herself—of these she made but comparatively sparse use while of the forced ones, which were, consequently, hard and harsh by comparison, and wanting In purity, she made afar too liberal use. Uninteresting and for tbe most part unmeaning as are nearly all such compositions aa the one assigned to Hertz, (excepting, indeed, they be interpreted by the hand, and tbe vpirit of tlio Master hiaiself,) tbe execution of the Divertissement was yet creditable to the Artiste
Regarding the lady's instrumentation an an accompanyist we would aay she has the common fault of being too ioua and thus It fall# out that lu place of the Instrumental accompaniment being subordinate to the vocal part, and oper» filing as an aid and a foil to bring out Into bold relief and embellish tho vocal utterances, it is made to partially bury and thus to make secondary that which primary and ought to be kept most prominent. In a word the Concert as a whole waa a failure,, not arising from default of ablliity In the artiste, but from unailist-liko straining after effects, which, when produced, are worthless. The audience felt not the blood leaping and tiugling through their veins, at the electric call of the "McGregor's Gathering" —the tender, yet aroent pathos of "Annie Laurie," reached not to their hearts—"Home, Sweet Home's" tones of "linked sweetness, longdrmwn out" thrilled them not with corresponding emotions—but |hey felt that an effort was being made to take them by surprlsaaud set them agapehy the Introduction of malapropos and meretricious ornament* —they wero conacloas that no truthful cfibrt wa* being put forth to touch their hearts and accordingly they remained unmoved.-
Hence, we fully endorse tbe opinion paaaed by the publlc upon this musical effort—an opinion significantly enough symbollxed, on the second night( by amply benches. We consider that, in the exercise of that judgment, Ibey have consulted, both the dictates of a discriminating taste, and the canon* of a eound and just criticism—moreover, we believe that the verdict they have Urns rendered, la full view of the merits, to not obnoxious to arraignment an the ground of conflicting either with the facte or the law in the case, and consequently that that judgment is not 1 labia to reversal.
VVe have been told that the style of singing on the second occasion was much better than that of the first night— If this were so. It ahowa that ln laying the fiUlurenotso much at the door of want of ability, as to that of a strained and unnatural manner, we have not shot wide of the mark.— Yea—tbe lady caa do better things if she will,
