ItewlAw mt California ftteaaarrs. $ public ahottld know &at a new line of Calr

York, independent of tbe old one*. This LIKE promises to excel all its predecessors, and to *e-

fort to those searching the land of gold. Hie first of |bie steamers intew^^d ^r the trade between Panama and San Francisco, the W ixPtBtB SCoPr, l6ft N»*r Yortnss tb^ lBth Jawaary arrived at Rio de Janerio in the extraordinary short time of twenty-one days, and at Panama in the un precedeoled time of forty-eight days and ten ioun from New Ytark! Hie distance thus run is nearly fifteen thousand miles, which would make her speed equsl lo three hundred miles per twenty four hours, a rate of Voyaging which completely throws in the shade all former triumphs of our steam marina at long distances. This vessel was built in 1851, and immediately put into the New Orleans and New York trade, for tbe express purpose of testing her sailing qualities, and giving to the. Amor ican public a fall knowledge of her capacities as a aea vessel Her voyages from the ports south and north, fully demonstrated her great power and safety, and daring the eight or ten monthe she remained in the trade* not a single accident occurred to stop her glorious career on river, aea or gulf. Her average time, from port to port, was about six days. During her late trip to Panama though the season was boisterous, and the weath er beavy, she never stopped her engines one mo saent, nor incurred any aooident of any sort. This vessel is believed to be one of the finest steamers afloat, of about 2,000 tons burden, and com manded by Capt. COUILLARD, a gentleman of ripe experience, and a seaman of the first class.

The owners of the "WINFIEUJ SCOTT" have now ready for service, or nearly so, another first-class steamer, "TheCoRTEz," equal in all respects to the vessel having made the quickest trip on record to Panama. Those two splendid steamers are intended to ply between the latter named place and San Francisco, while the new Steamship **UNITED STATES," and other equally well equipped vessels, wil) form the line from New York to Chagres, thus making an expeditious, certain, and most agreeable line to the capitol of our new Empire on the Pacific. These vessels are, without doubt, the finest steamships ever placed at the disposal of California passengers, and we know that such a line has been greatly needed to make that route what it ought to be.

It is to be hoped, and we believe, that our enter prising fellow-citizens from the west, emigrating to California, will have less to complain of, in suffering and delay, when they embark by this line, and that twenty days will suffioe to place them at their journey's end, instead of the snail-like pace which has marked the history of California emigration. Speed can neverbe obtained without strength of hull, and a perfect adaptation of the machinery to the boat tself. The solid structure of the "VVinfield Scott,"

Cortes," and "United Stales," account for the extraordinary speed of the former vessel, and gives assurance that her consorts will be equally fortunate in their "destined element." Their noble engines work on board of them as regularly at sea as on a river, for they are built of such capacity as to resist sea motion, and, without .which, all steamer? are more or less unsafe, besides being slow and unmanageable. We consider this line, in all respects, one of the best ever placed in the California trade.* 1 „v» v. jw

The character of the owners of these boats is a new guaranty that passengers may rely upon it.— The proprietors, DAVIS, BROOKS & Co., aro too well known to require endorsement in New York. Here, it may be proper to say, that their's is an old, longknown, and responsible commercial House, the standing of which gives assurance that passengers will escape tbe usual annoyaoccs of violated promises and spurious tickets.

We would here remark, that persons en route to California cannot be too cautious about the purchase of their tickets in New York. Late developments there expose a grand and organized system of swindling, by which hundreds have parted with tbeir money for spurious tickets, and when they reached Panama, found that these tickets, were entirely worthless, the sellers of them being neither owner* nor agents for the steamers of the old linee. The city seems to be full of thee# tick-et-selling gentry, tad with sufficient address and canning to impose upon many very shrewd western people. Emigrants should avoid all snob pests, and spply, at once, on their arrival at New York, or by letter before they go on, to some responsible House owning or controlling the line on which they desire to go out We have said enough, lo point such emigrants to a House, where they will be cure to find the most honorable treatment, and to a Line which promises to excel all its predecessors

You say be is "no missionary of religion." 1 shall make a christian of htm, and send him back to his own country as a missionary. 1 was grieved to see bis besotted igr.orance. He knows nothing of Xaea, or Amida, or Dahio. He has never heard of the precious book of Snickisnacky, nor bathed in the forgiving at ream of Chum-dow-chum. I cm glad there is a country to the Bast of me so large as your, and I shall take measures immediately to bring you over to the true faith. I send by the bearer a bundle cf colporteur's pamphlets and tracts, which I should like distributed at once. I hope you will not oppose my establishing temples in your land. Your people are not one-half as large as mine, but yours are worth saving. Although outcasts their is still some hope for you. As for yonr trading with me why do you trouble yourselvels with wordly ambitions? We spend our time in religious ceremonies and pray, ers. But 1 am willing to open communication with you so that you may not object to my seeking to bring yon over to the true religion. Kiss all your wives for me. Ah, you have only one* Poor 1, I have six thousand. Pray accept this bottle of rum as a token of my high consideration.
