The Democratic Itevlew end Gen. Butler. |g The Democratic papera generally thrJfcghout the country, are down on the Democratic Review, for an article which appeared in a recent number of that periodica], reflecting upon the civil and military services of Gen. WILLIAM 0. BUTLER. The Review justly merits the censure of the Democratic presa, and the people of all partiea for no truer or nobler hearted man Uvea than WILLIAM O. Bcrns*. The name of Butler is intimately conneoted with all the glorious events in our country*a history. In all tbe wars in which our country has been engaged from ihe Revolution down, the Butler's have been gallantly and nobly represented. In the war with Mexico, he wa* a volunteer general, and for awhile commander-in-chief of ihe entire army, Monterey and Cerro Gordo well atteat his daring and bravery. He is a true democrat of the Jefleraonien school, and a noble specimen of the American gentleman. That General Butler is the first choice of the Democracy of many aectiona in the Union for the Presidency, there can be doubt, and there are few, if any, who would be more available a* a candidate. If tbe Democratic Review wishes »c lose ibe confidence of ihe entire party it is pursuing tbe right course.

PROFESSOR LARRABEE.—VVe copy the following paragraph from the 'Western Review,' a periodical devoted to the cause of common school education, published at Cincinnati. Pruise from such a source is indeed worth having: 'Several of the papers and leading citizens of Indiana are proposing Prof. W-. C. Larrabee as the Superintendent of Publio instruction. We sincerely trust they will succeed in his nomination and election. He has devoted his whole, life to education from passionate fondness for it. He baa been one olfthe professors in Asbury University eleven yeira, and has, by personal exertions, influence, and energy, given to it much of its high character for usefulness. It aeema to be the misfortune of the Whig party that the moment they nominate a man for any office, from President down to Constable, he becomes immediately ashamed of his partisan associates, and hastens to disavow any but personal connection# with them. Whatever may be the policy which dictates auch a course of conduct on the part of PThig candidates, we should think that party would feel not at all complimented with it. g%

Suppose by some process tbey come to a decision, that this or that man, is the moe.t fit peraofe for nomination every one knows that they can give their gratuitous decision no practical effect and if it operates at all with the convention, it will be only by raising prejudice in that body, against the person they have so presumptuously introduced to its nolice. The Whigs, as you will readily suppose, are very much elated by the seeming strife in the Democratic party but they are doomed aoon to re-enact with heightened interest, the game sbenes whioh now afford them so mucfi pleasure. Mr. Fillmore's prospects of getting the nomination, are daily brightening, and Gen. Scott's, as a oonsequence, growing dim. Mr. Fillmore stands pledged to the support of the compromise measures. Gen. Scott has never given any publio expression ol his views iu relation lo them, and though challenged by some of the leading whigs to do eo, still remaina silent '-He is calculating up6n the support of Governors Seward and Johnston, and the like of them, and is afraid to show his hand, for fear of giving them offence. To auapend the rttlea, require* twothirds of the votes present and the motion waa ouly lost by a few votes, which augurs well for the passage of the resolution, whenever they get it before the House, The few Democrats of the North and the South, who were originally opposed to ihe compromise measures, now that they are the laws of the land, are willing to acquiesce in them. The United States Supreme Court has recently decidcd lhat a seal is not neceaary to constitute a letter or make it chargeable with postage. An order folded, *ud directed as a letter, is declared mailable matter, and the oonverance of it on a mail route f* a violation of law.

Marcv's chance "i* a slim on**1 Buchanan's prospect "not quite aa forlorn is also a pour one.' Houston has a chance but in one free States, and a poor one ther*., •Gen. Butler has a chance the final struggle, presuming that Gov. Marcy shall be dropped, but his prospect is not a fluttering one. Unless, then, some new element shall be foisted in the Balimore cauldron, we anticipate lhat the main struggle will probably be between the friends of Gen. Cass and Judge Douglas respectively. Gen. Cass will go into the Convention with a decided-plurality of the votes, but enough 10 nominate him under the two third rule, whioh has become a part of ihe Baltimore platform. W© apprehend tbat Gen. Cass's vote will not much increase after tho first ballot, while that of'the Little Giant,' will do so. Whether ill or will not be nominated, we do not prediot but his chance seems equal to lhat of any rival, though he will only hnvo some fifiy or sixty votes on the first ballot.'

rers at tho recollection i.iat the author of Lalla Rookh has passed to that "bourn from whence no traveller returns," Unlike Byron, Moore lived to a ripe old age, but his mental faculties long sinco began to decay, and for a year or two past he has bordered upon imbecility. Death was doubtless a relief to him, and to his immediate friends. Moore was a true Irishman. His muse was ever exerted in behulf of his unfortunate country. He never condescended to sacrifice his love for his native land for the applauso of the high born among his country's oppressors. Peace to his memory!

Tho N. Y. Evening Express of tho 13th publishes an extinct from a private letlter, written by Mr. Clay lo a friend in New Yoik, in which the venerable statesman declares that Mr. Fillmore is his choice'for the next Presidency. It made something of a slir in the whig camp Mr Clay thinks Mr. Webster«r Gefi. Scott 'might possibly' administer the Government as well as Mr. Fillmore,'but then,' he adds, 'neither of them has been tried.'
