The people ef (hit country have never re-elected a whig President. They have never elected two whig adminis'.ra lions in ^accession,

They have now put into power democratic governor* In twenty-six Stele* out of thirty-one, leavioj whig governor* to five State. They have eleclet democratic legislature* in twenty-three States, leaving whig legislatures in eight States.

They have a large democratic majority in both houses of Congress, prepared to maintain substan tisfly as it now is the existing democratic legislative policy of the country.

It is stated that, under the apportionment of electoral voles among the States by the hew census the democratic candidate receiving the vote* of the States canied by the democracy in 1848 would be elected. Since that time the democrats have fully carried New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey Rhode Island, and Delaware in the gubernatorial election, Maryland, North Carolina, Kentucky Massachusetts, and Connecticut and In the cou gressional election, Tennessee——all o: which States voted for Gen. Taylor. Meantime the whigs have carried, even in the gubernatorial election, no single State in the I

which gave a democratic major

ity in 1848, except Wisconsin, which is now regard ed as surely democratic in 1852. An offset to this loss is also given by the admission of California, which ts al3o democratic.

That the democratic party, therefore, will triumph in the coming presidential canvass appears to be just as certain as that it will continue to exist as a national organization. If those who prefer the democratic policy, and mean to vote the democratic ticket, shall see fit to meet, by their delegates, at Baltimore simply as democrats, without regard to any other party distinctions, or party organizations or psrty names whatever, the success of the democracy would seem to be sure. The only hope of the whigs is in the action of those democrat* who may be led to take part in an attempt to supersede the democratic organization by some other of a aectional character, or else to interpolate into the democratic creed some new issue, fo divide and conquer is the polioy of the whigs—-to unite and be proof against assault is the duty of the demo crats. Thus, in Louisiana, General Downs has been beaten because the democrats ware divided and thus it will be in every other quarter ol the Union where similar divisions are oermitted to tell at the ballot-box. So true is this, that it is almost a damnation of whiggery to say that it is whatever divides democracy.— Wash. Union.

DRAH SIB: This will be handed you by Gen. Sam Houston, a representative to Congross from this Slate, and a particular friend of mine, to whom 1 bcjj leave to introduoe you. I have know Gen eral Houston many years, and, entertaining for him the highest feeling* of regard and oonftdonce, recommend him to you wiih great safely, lie has attained his presont standing without the extrinsic advantages of fortune and education, and has sustained in his various promotions from a common soldier to the major-general, the character of a high minded and honorable man and as suoh I present himio you, and nhall regard the civilities ol which you may tender hi-n as a great favor.

With a sincere wish that good health and happy days are still yours, 1 remain your friend and obedient servant, ANDREW JACKSON

NB.

TEXAS.—Our reader* will

find below an interesting note from General Jackson, to Mr. Jefferson, written in 1823. Its object was to introduce General Houston (who hadjuit been elscted to Congress from Tennessee,) to the Saga of Montioello. It wa« a letter of introduction, and still it was more than that. It briefly tells of the great confidence reposed in Gen. Houston by that man of keen discernment—that hero and statesman whose wisdom and honest purpose are now universslly acknowledged Audrow Jackson was no flatterer—no hipocrite. When he said that Sam Houston had risen by his own merits, and that he was a high minded and honorable man, he meant all he said, and had good reasons for saying it.—Hartford Ttmet. 1II:RMITAOK, Oct. 24, 1823.
