A BEAST.

How Hon. James Mullen Caresses the Partner of His Joys and Sorrows.

A Righteous Judgment.

lames Mullen, who lives at the corner of First and Farrington streets is a great beast. lie returned home late last after a carouse, and finding his wife in bed, he proceeded to drag her forth and vent his beastly ill temper on her helpless person, ending bv turning her out of the house. A couple of neighbors ran up town and lold deputy Marshall Buckingham of the state of affairs.

That officer repaired to the scene and captured the recreant Jim, whom he locked up in the station house.

This morning at ten o'clock tho brute was arraigned before Mayor Edmunds, his injured wife, appearing against him as prosecuting witness. When arraigned for trial the defendant pleaded '•not guil-ty'' iir- a" loud tone of voice, and with a defiant manner, declared himself ready for trial.

Mary Mutien, the complaining witness, testified that the defendant had beaten and abused her in a most brutal manner. He had choked her, pounded her in the face, clutched her by the hair and bumped her head against the floor, and had finally turned her out of the house in her night-dress, threatening all the while to kill her. She said this was not the first nor the second time this lieast of a husband had abused her in this manner. She had stood such treatment as long as she could, and had come to the determination to stand it no longer. She intimated that tlie court had her consent to send the prisoner to the penitentiary for a thousand year's.

Deputy Buckingham, said he had been summoned to the scene of conflict at midnight." He found Mrs. Mullen-standingjn the street, clothed in a night dress, her faceeovered with blood. He arrested the defendant and brought him to thb station house.

Mullen refused to ask any questions of the witnesses, or to offer any evidence in his own behalf.

The Mayor, after examining the statute in which the complaint was based, said: "The' forfeitrire, to the city, in your case, sir. will be in the sum of twenty-five dollars with the costs attached." "Ought to be a hundred" said Mrs. Mullen. "And I will add" said his honor, "twenty days in the work house, at hard labor." "'Aint enough" said Mrs. M. "Make it a hundred days."

Mrs. Mullen was politely informed that the court could make its own decissions. When told that she might go, Mrs. Mullen gathered up her infant child,which she had brought with her and stalked out of the[court room pausing near her lord and master, to say, "you can stay in jail forever for all I care." The severe penalty which Mayor Edmunds saw fit to inflict on this brute in human form, will niCet with the hearty approval of all lovers of justice. No penaly can be too severe for the just punishment of a wife beater.

Haute, in the fall of 1S15, leaving the subject of this sketch, and one

Of her sisters, at Vincennes, Ind., where they went to school until the spring of 1816. Her father, in company with a few soldiers, took passage in a keel boat, and descended the Wabash river to Vincennes, returning with the two girls and a boat-load «f provisions for the soldiers at the fort, taking'near ten days to make the trip. Her father first settled six miles southest of Terre Haute, where he built the first blacksmith shop that ever was built in Vigo cotinty". Soon after he removed to Otter Greekr prairie, live miles north of Terre Haute. On December 25th, 1818 moved to Parke county, settling in a three-^sided camp for that winter, a few rods east of John R. Miller's present residence.

Three years after her father moved to the northeast .part of Parke county, where she was marrid to Tobias Miller, January 8th, iSa* and moved the next day to her„late residence, two and onehalf miles northeast of Bridgeton,-where "!^bas resided ever since. She was raised
