NicKle Possessed of the Devil. An Italian with a lively little beggar of a monkey, and a wheezy old handorgan, was taking in the stray nickles yesterday, to the great amusement o! little boys and enthusiastic loafers. Master Monk, its'eem3, is not only a beggar on the sidewalk, but goes up the side of the house,op a water spout, or any where t„at-his master bids him Yesterday afternoon tiny were performing In front of the Western Union telegraph .ollioe, and spying some of the operators at the window, little Jocco was dispatched up tbe waterspout to «ather up the lucre. The boys saw hiui coming and prepared for his reception. A ground connection was fasteuod to a large zinc sheet which was placed on tlie window sil' another wire was attached to the'lortycup battery and wound around a shining nickle this was laid close, to tbe zinc, and when Jocco arose he sat squarely down on the zinc plate and gobbled the nick la in his paw, thua throwing the whole charge of electricity through his body.
The monkey jumped and howled and chattered, and turned somersaults The wandering minstrel on the sidewalk below, took in tbe situation at a glance, and sucli a storin ot profanity as escaped from his lips has not been heard iu that quiet locality for many a day.
The monkey finally escaped from the electric clutches of its enemies and mado all haste dowu the water spout, chattering and howling with pain and iudignation. That monkey and his friends will avoid telegraph offices in the future.
Sacrilege.
The "poor boxes" at both of the Catholic churches, St. Joseph and St. Benedict, of this city, were broken open and robbed of their contents last night. It is impossible to form any estimate of tbe amount stolen. Tho boxes had not been opened for some time and it is supposed that they must have contained a considerable amount.
At St. Joseph's the ttiieves broke into the church but did not steal anything.
It is to be hoped that tho perpotrators of this sacriligious crimo will be discovered and punished. It is bad enough to steal ordinary property. It is particularly bad to steal from the church and tiie poor. in
