THE LARtfEMT CITY CIRCULATION
Saturday Evening April 15, !876.
Cit-y and Neighborhood.
To Advertisers,
The publishers of the GAZETTE recently purchased from the •Cincinnati type foundery a complete new drees of type. It ha6 been resolved to enlarge the paper to eight columns. These improvements we trust will be duly appreciated. They wiil enable advertisers to essay much better style in their notice?, and will give the GAZETTE more "breathing room" for the extra reading matter that it is henceforth proposed to run. As this is the beginning of the spring season, and as these improvements j»,re not temporary ones, but the nat ural outgrowth of increased "business, it is hoped that advertisers will see the point and send in their notices, should our solicitors fail to call on them. At 15 cents per week the GAZETTE is ny far the cheapest paper published in this vicinity.
DASHING CHARLIE this afternoon.
LOOK out ahead, for Captain Iiogardus.
THE funeral of Mrs. C. A. Fera, took place to-day.
THE Y. M. C. A. bas gone into the show business.
CHARLES DICKENS, by Col. McLean, on next Monday evening.
COL. MCLEAN lecture* at the Baptist Church next Monday evening.
SPORTING people are happy with the prospect ahead that tbcre now is.
THERE will be no more surveying done on the C. ifc T. H- road lor some time:
THE piivate dance at Toute & MeKennan's hall last night was largely attended.
A CHILD of Mr. V. G- Dickhout, born yesterday morning, died about 1 o'clock.
BEAD elsewhere the GAZETTE'S diseription of Mr: Samuel McDonald's rareties.
THE long dearth of amusements of a minstrel character, will be happily broken by the Camillo Urso party.
IN the addition of Mr. Boud Hunley
to the clerical force at Hoberg, Root fc Go's., this house has made a great acquisition.
A.T. STEWART'S bequest of $1,000,000 to Henrys Hilton, whom he designates in his will to act as his agent, is certainly munificent enough.
THE Baptist Home Mission Society met at the house of Mrs. M. Boland,on Cherry street on Thursday last. The meeting is said to have been the largi--est of the kind which has assembled in this city for several years.
GEO. W. CARICO, the present incumbent, has been renominated by the Democrats of Vigo county for sheriff. Mr.Carico is a kind hearted gentleman, with liberal opinions, but is an extremely modest person, and can not use his tongue, as well as some people. We predict bis success by an im tnense majority.—[Vincennes Sun.
CAPT. FITCHB'S surveying party stopped some time, while surveying the line of the C. A T. H. Railway, at Worthinston at the hotel of "Kib" Os* born. All of our older citizens recollect Kib Osborn as a genial, whole aouled fellow, who never forgot a friend. 'V
REV. ALEX STKRRETT was called today to Evansville to officiate in the funeral service of Mr. Crain, of New York, as old lriend, who will be buried there to-morrow. In consequence of this, bis pulpit will be oecupied tomorrow by Mr. J. K. Sammis, Secretary of the Y. M. C. A., who will be asJisUd in the service by some of the astccleMon.
J»asti Ball.
The base ball season will be^fairly opened in Terre Haute, by a friendly contest between the Sycamores and Westerns, which is to take place at the Sycamore grounds to-morrow. Both clubs have been strengthened by the addition of skilful players, and the Western feol confident that the Sycamores will not have so much of a "soft thing" this season as they did last year.
If the weather god should smile his sweetest smile "to-morrow, there will be a large crowd on the grounds to witness this preliminary skirmish.
COL. War. E. MCLEAN'S lecture on Chas. Dickens, at tbe Baptist Church Monday evening, will doubtless be largely attended, and is well worth any one's time npent in giving one night each week to the home course of Eoglish lectures.
TILL SIKK O'CLOCK,
A Ltn?g 1'ull, a Strong Pull and a Pull Altogether. For the accommodation of tax payers City Treasurer John Paddock will keep his office open until o'clock, to-night and Monday night. These are tbe two last days of grace.
