THE GAZETTE has been fooled twice on the California tree. Last fall it flowed over in a column description of the tree and its history, under the impression that it was to pass through the evening following the publication of the paper, and in an effort to "scoop competitors. Great forces, work silently. Notli ing can equal the irreBistable power of freezing water and yet no power is more quiet, or if the expression is allowed, so, apparently, unobtru sive. Ameteur papers can lay their success to their quiet manner of pro cedure. That they are becoming of considerable importance, few are aware, and yet this lack of fenowl edge in no wise impairs the validity of the statement. Some of these amateur offices are worth hundreds of dollars. There is an office of this kind run by two Terre Haute boys that is worth $500. The circulations of these papers are scattered over the entire country, and the papers are received with great favor among the boys and girls. As educators and means of innocent amusement they are certainly first class. The Prairie City Gem, a neat pub lication issued by Messrs. Rupe & Whittaker, is just out for this month and while prepared by boys would do credit men. Miss Lottie .Ray, the leading lady correspondent is evidently a little older than the rest of the writers, as her animated stories, and amuseing mots, bear the ear-marks of talent, not on ly, but of experience. Messrs Rupe and Whittaker recently pub lished a little pamphlet for Dr. Allen Pence containing his answer to the Woudhull aspersions of the character of the immaculate S-tewart .The boys have on their exchange list about 43 apers printed all over the United tates. In a few weeks the ameteur publishers will hold a national convention.

THE SUCCESSFUL PHYSICIAN. From the St. Louis Globe. There is probably no man to whom the community owe so much as to the honest fair-spoken physician, who does his actjral duty, both to himself and to his patients. Really skillful physicians are not so numerous that their virtues need no mention, and hence the advertisement of Dr. R. Y. Pierce, of Buffalo, may well claim the reader's attention. Dr. Pierce is a type of a class of men who obtain success by careful and well directed effort, not attempting too much, or creating false ideas as to ability. The only reliable physician in these days of complicated disorders and high-pressure living is the "Specialist." the man who understands his one branch of the business. Such in his line is Dr. Pierce. For the benefit of his readers he has written a '•Common Sense Medical Adyisor," which is well worth reading by those who need such a work. With stritt business honor, high professional skill, reasonable fees, and a large corps ot competent assistants, Dr. Pierce will doubtlsss make his name familiar is "household words."
